Gardening Tips and Stretches: Back Pain Prevention

Gardening Tips and Stretches: Back Pain Prevention

Gardening is healthy for the body and does count as exercise, which works the major muscle groups that include the neck, shoulders, arms, abdomen, back, glutes, and legs. However, gardening can cause stress to the body with unhealthy posture/positioning, not using proper lifting techniques, using the wrong tools, and not taking breaks to stretch out the body, move around, and rehydrate. This can lead to body soreness, pain, and injuries. Here are some recommended gardening tips and stretches for pain prevention.

Gardening Tips and Stretches For Pain Prevention

Gardening Tips and Stretches

A sore back and body can stem from staying in a single posture for too long and repetitive motions/movements. Here are a few tips to help maintain musculoskeletal health while gardening:

Tools

  • Choosing the right garden tools can spare a lot of pain and money.
  • Focus on the fundamental tools and purchase the best quality tools that the budget will allow.
  • Size weight, task level, material, grips, handle length, and attachments are things to consider
  • Maintaining quality tools will go a long way.

Digging

  • Digging requires the right tools to get the job done safely and efficiently.
  • Make sure the shovel is sharp enough to reduce using extra force to break up the dirt.
  • The shovel handle should be long enough to avoid excessive bending.
  • Utilize proper digging posture while using a shovel.
  • If using too much pressure, soak the soil to loosen it up.
  • Try not to twist when shoveling the dirt/soil; instead, move the whole body to where the dirt needs to be.

Lifting

  • Prolonged lifting of bags, plants, pots, and equipment can take a toll on the spine and spinal muscles.
  • Bend the knees and use the hips to lift, as the hip muscles are stronger than the low back muscles.
  • Do not bend the waist to come back; use the hips.
  • Investing in an elevated garden or gardening seat/stool is recommended to avoid bending.

Weeding

  • Weeding can require prolonged sitting or bending, depending on the number of weeds.
  • To avoid excessive sitting and bending, a gardening seat/stool can help, as well as a standing weeding tool will reduce the pressure on the back.
  • This is also helpful for knee and/or hip pain.

Mowing

Take Breaks

  • Do not push through; take a break even if the body feels great.
  • Every half hour, the body needs to rest.
  • Try to work in 30-minute increments then break to move around, stretch, relax, and rehydrate.
  • Squatting, bending, digging, lifting bags, and pushing wheelbarrows is a form of strength training that helps achieve stronger muscles, healthier bones, and joints.
  • But if there are no breaks, the chances for pain and injuries increase.

Stretches

Simple stretches can reduce the strain and pain of gardening. Stretching before, during, and after the gardening session is recommended.

Cat Stretch

  • This is a simple yoga pose that helps with back soreness.
  • On your hands and knees, keep the hands at shoulder distance and the knees at hip distance.
  • Pull the navel up to the spine and arch/round the back.
  • Slowly straighten the back.

Cow Stretch

  • The cow stretch is the opposite of the cat pose.
  • Start in the same position.
  • Drop the stomach to the floor and lift the head up and back.
  • The spine will arch and gently stretch the back.

Head Rolls

  • Head rolls will help with shoulder and neck pain.
  • Drop the chin down toward the chest.
  • Gently roll the head to one side going around back to the center.
  • Repeat in the opposite direction.

Supine Twists

  • Supine twists can help the lower back.
  • Lay down with the legs at a 45-degree angle and the arms out to the sides.
  • Twist the legs to one side and look in the opposite direction.
  • Hold the pose until the stretch is felt, and then move back to the starting point.
  • Repeat on the opposite side.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic medicine can help alleviate aches and pains and rehabilitate, realign, and strengthen the body to optimal health. Individuals are educated on the musculoskeletal system, injury prevention, nutrition, and exercise to maintain wellness and a pain-free lifestyle.

Everyday Movements

Everyday Movements

Posture is how we hold our bodies while standing, sitting, or lying down. A healthy posture is the correct alignment of the body supported by the right amount of muscle tension. Our everyday movements and activities affect the body’s alignment. A postural imbalance can impact the body’s health in various ways. It can cause:

  • General soreness
  • Back pain
  • Muscular pain
  • Fatigue
  • Digestive problems
  • Poor self-esteem

Unhealthy posture can increase the risk of spinal dysfunction, joint degeneration, stress joints, and muscles, resulting in permanent damage if left untreated. The best way to prevent postural imbalances is to be aware of the causes utilize proper ergonomic and movement strategies that can help avoid these problems. As the everyday bad habits, behaviors, and activities are understood, it is much easier to prevent and correct them.

Everyday Movements

Everyday Posture Is Important

Specific muscles maintain the body’s posture, so we don’t have to think about it and constantly adjust. Muscle groups, including the hamstrings and large back muscles, are essential in maintaining healthy positions. When the muscles function correctly, the postural muscles prevent gravity from pushing the body forward. Postural muscles also maintain balance when moving. A healthy posture reduces strain on the supporting muscles and ligaments during everyday movement and weight-bearing activities. Engaging in healthy posture helps:

  • Keep the bones and joints in correct alignment so that the muscles function correctly.
  • Decrease the abnormal wearing of joints resulting in degenerative arthritis and joint pain.
  • Reduce the stress on the ligaments holding the spinal joints together, preventing injury.
  • Allow muscles to work more efficiently.
  • The body exert less energy.
  • Prevent muscle fatigue and muscle pain.
  • Prevent muscle strain and overuse disorders.

Unhealthy Posture

Unhealthy posture results when the body sits or stands with the spine in an abnormal position. When an individual practices unhealthy posture over a long period, it progressively leads to muscles and ligaments becoming elongated and weak, while others become short and tight. This creates a physical imbalance that leads to postural abnormalities like:

  • Rounded shoulders
  • Forward head posture
  • Thoracic kyphosis or hunched back
  • Lumbar lordosis
  • Swayback
  • Limited mobility
  • Increases the risk of injury

Causes

Habits

  • Individuals can begin to develop unhealthy habits that negatively impact their posture, like walking with their head looking towards the ground. This shifts the body out of alignment.

Sitting For Too Long

  • Spending too much time sitting even with the correct posture will impact the spine and muscles. It weakens the muscles, ligaments, and abdominals.

Weight

  • Carrying extra weight can force the spine into an awkward position. This is true for individuals with pot bellies, as it pulls the lower back forward, increasing the risk of lumbar lordosis.

Unhealthy Diet

  • If the spine does not have access to the vitamins and nutrients it needs, it can struggle to maintain its strength and flexibility. It is also more difficult for the body to repair damage to the spine’s muscles and ligaments.

Clothing and Footwear

  • Clothing and footwear can impact posture.
  • High heels, poor-fitting shoes, saggy jeans, large belts, heavy jackets, and other items can force the spine into an unnatural position.
  • These are fine to wear for short periods but avoid wearing them day in and day out.

Treatment

Chiropractors specialize in issues affecting the spine, especially posture. They can:

  • Perform a postural examination involving a complete assessment of the musculoskeletal system to identify any joint misalignments and issues that affect soft tissue.
  • Perform adjustments of misaligned joints using various techniques.
  • Recommend stretches to loosen/lengthen tight muscles and strengthen weak ones, leading to improvements. A chiropractor will develop an effective stretching regimen to target the correct muscles.
  • Recommend nutritional advice, exercise, and everyday habit adjustments.

Insulin Resistance

Individuals who sit for extended periods, don’t exercise and don’t watch their diet can experience insulin resistance. Insulin resistance happens when insulin cannot transport excess blood sugar out of the blood and into the muscles. One study found that women who sat for eight hours a day had a higher chance of developing diabetes. Individuals with diabetes tend to have more fat within their bodies, particularly visceral fat, increasing insulin resistance potential. Individuals with diabetes experience a faster loss of muscle mass as they age, further intensifying symptoms and deterioration of body composition.

A Teenagers Spine During Development

A Teenagers Spine During Development

Poor spinal health in adolescence can lead to chronic pain in adulthood. Teenagers, just like adults, can experience back pain from accidents, sports injuries, a sedentary lifestyle, part-time jobs, chores, etc. However, sitting too long in school along with heavy backpacks can also contribute to compromised spinal health. Chiropractic professionals can help these young individuals address and prevent spinal issues/injuries to maintain a healthy spine.A Teenagers Spine During Development

Teenagers Spine Issues

If discomfort or pain is present, much push through, as they and their spines are young. There are common spinal dysfunctions that teens and parents should be aware of. These include:

Disc injuries

Teenagers can put a serious strain on the spine from various forms of physical activity, jumping, dancing, and playing. This pressure gets transmitted through the spine. During a teenager’s development, this can result in permanent disc damage.

Scoliosis

A spinal deformity or exaggerated curvature of the spine is common and affects young children and teens. It usually happens during the growth spurt just before puberty. This is why it is important to have a teenager’s spine checked regularly and analyzed for signs/symptoms of scoliosis.

Spondylolysis

This condition is often associated with sports injuries. It happens when teenagers overextend/overreach their backs. It’s most common in gymnastics, weight lifting, tennis, football, diving, and other similar sports.

Protection and Prevention

There are several ways that parents and healthcare providers can help teenagers make healthy decisions to achieve and maintain optimal spinal health.

Sitting less, moving more.

Children are taught to sit from a very young age. In school, watching t.v., or doing homework, teenagers spend more time sitting than their bodies should. Teenagers need to stand, walk and move around just like adults to protect their spines from degeneration and injury.

Maintaining healthy posture

Teens who learn how to maintain proper posture at a young age can maintain it for the rest of their life. Learning proper posture at a young age.

Sports safety

Playing sports is healthy. However, there is a risk associated with teen sports. Although they are taught to play safely, encourage them to continue to educate themselves about sports injuries and know how to address them.

Chiropractic Support

At Injury Medical Chiropractic and Functional Medicine Clinic, we’re committed to helping young adults and adolescents overcome and prevent spinal injuries that could turn into chronic pain conditions. We are continually developing our chiropractic, and physical therapy treatment approaches to achieve optimal results.

Sleep and Growth Hormone In Children

Growth hormones primarily control growth. The hypothalamus and the pituitary gland regulate this hormone. Sleep plays an important role in the proper function of these glands. A review showed that:

  • Growth hormone levels rise and peak at the onset of deep sleep
  • Multiple but smaller peaks were seen during other sleep stages
  • Individuals that have a delay in the onset of deep sleep have delayed peaks in growth hormone levels

For children to grow properly, they need to have adequate levels of growth hormone. This means they need to have a sufficient amount of sleep. The proper amount of sleep is vital for healthy body composition. A study measured the body composition of preschool-aged children. The study found that children who had proper sleep levels had less overall fat mass and reduced body fat. Children and teenagers need to get the proper amounts of sleep for their bodies to grow healthily.

Seven Exercise Tips to Help Get Back Into Shape

Seven Exercise Tips to Help Get Back Into Shape

Seven: Working in the yard, and wherever else the sun beats down relentlessly will be a test as to the type of shape your body is in. Poor eating habits have increased fat deposits, as well as sitting around. Never fear, it is recommended that you try out these seven exercise tuneup tips to get back in shape as summer begins.

Seven

Drink proper amount of water regularly

Water helps immensely in generating fat-loss. 64 ounces a day is the absolute minimum. Twice that amount, or one-gallon, is the way to go, making sure the water is ice cold. Ice water is about 40-degrees Fahrenheit. This means the body's system has to heat the water to a core body temperature of 98.6 degrees.

The process requires about one calorie to warm one ounce of cold water to body temperature. Therefore an 8-ounce bottle of ice water burns seven calories. Try that with 16 glasses, which equals 128 ounces, or one gallon. This generates 123 calories of heat energy.

Eat small meals more often

Fat-loss study subjects were given six meals to consume a day, with no meal having more than 400 calories. The study emerged successfully. It is important to allow no longer than three hours between eating. This could be snacks, light meals, salads, etc.

Eating with this type of pattern keeps the body on an even keel. And since the individual is never overly-full/stuffed and never over-hungry/famished this seems to be ideal for losing weight and getting rid of fat cells.

When eating takeout Assert Yourself

All the help you can get to avoid gorging on rich, high-caloric, restaurant foods. Here are some tips:

  • Don't go through the whole menu
  • Choose a simple green salad without the garnish
  • Lemon juice, vinegar, or low-calorie dressing is the way to go instead of the creamy and oily dressings.
  • Select one or two vegetables with nothing
  • A plain baked potato is a great choice
  • Other positive choices are broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower
  • Find out what kind of fish is available
  • Try the fish baked, steamed, or broiled, with nothing on top
  • Decaffeinated coffee or tea as a dessert, with some fresh fruit

Get an exercise routine that you will stick to

Be careful if it's swimming or some type of water-based exercise. Swimming does offer benefits, but the thermal effect of being in the water can cause you to eat more from all of the energy loss. Strength training is the way to go, so you can lose weight and then get into the water exercises. More than any other exercise or activity strength training promotes a double-reducing advantage.

Do not Over-Exercise

Overdoing it with the exercise can tear down body tissue/s, increasing the risk of injuries, which then puts you in downtime and less active.

Too much Television Time

Decrease the exposure to television because of the convenient foods that are offered. This diminishes the temptation to overeat. Get involved in a household project, along with the extended daylight hours, can help this situation.

Take advice

When you are tough on yourself, life can become a beautiful thing, as you witness the benefits from the hard work. We don't pay the price for good health, we just enjoy it along with the benefits. However, we do pay the price for bad/poor health.

Have a Safe Happy Holiday and Prevent Injury El Paso, TX.

This is the season of the year that brings special time with loved ones, but its also a time when many un-merry mishaps and accidents can happen. From neck and back pain to sprains and strains to serious fractures that can put you in the emergency room. With a little care, preparation and precaution, you can be safe and enjoy the holidays to the fullest, while reducing the risk of experiencing a slip and fall injury.

The Garage

This is where holiday prep, go for tools and the like usually begin. However, the garage can be the first place where danger lurks during this season.

  • Most of us store the big boxes at the top on overhead storage racks etc. A wobbly step ladder, not enough upper body strength, someone opening the door where the ladder stands and tipping it, etc, is a perfect setup for a fall.
  • The first thing to ask is whether or not this is a job for you? If not then wait and ask for help from friends and family that can offer added strength and balance.
  • Plan ahead and prepare ahead so that repacking the decorations, lights, and so on will be a clean safe process.
  • Proper footwear that can grip a stable step ladder is a must.

Around the Tree

Anything can happen around the tree, ornaments fall and break, wire from the lights shorts out, trip and fall around it.

  • Just be aware of your surroundings and maybe keep a safe perimeter around the tree so nobody trips, slips and falls around it.
  • Focus on stability on a ladder if you have to add, adjust, the tree/ornaments, lights and what have you.
  • If the tree starts to lean, make sure reinforcements are there just in case when you’re ready to straighten it out.

Maybe Get Off the Floor

Wrapping gifts on the floor doesn’t pose the greatest risk for a spine injury, but it can increase chances for amusclestrain and sore back and neck. Hours just hunched over on the floor is a sure-fire set up for back pain.

  • Again plan ahead and knock out the trimmings and trappings little by little so there is plenty left in the tank when it’s time for the main event.
  • Maybe set up the wrapping station at a table and sit for a bit, stand for a bit, take plenty of breaks, and move around and stretch out.
  • Sitting in a chair will help posture and prevent slouching.

On the House

As a spine injury specialist, I can tell you falls from the roof while hanging lights are real, and can be life-changing. From severe spine injuries to paralyzing fractures.

Safe Equipment is of the utmost importance!

  • Make sure the ladder youre using is sturdy and on solid ground.
  • Only hang the lights from the eaves, so you can stand on a ladder.
  • Maybe think about using one of those projection kits that project various displays onto your house without the risk of injury.

No matter how you choose to decorate and entertain this holiday season, safety is priority one. From our team here atInjury Medical and Chiropractic Clinic Happy Holidays!

Three Ways Cruciferous Vegetables Prevent Cancer El Paso, TX.

Three Ways Cruciferous Vegetables Prevent Cancer El Paso, TX.

Research has given us even more reasons to eat our veggies. Several studies have revealed that certain types of vegetables, specifically those known as cruciferous vegetables, have properties that could make them useful in preventing cancer.

What are Cruciferous Vegetables?

Some of the crunchiest, tastiest vegetables belong to the Cruciferae family. Typically cool weather vegetables, they are most notably characterized by four petal flowers somewhat resembling a cross.

These flower buds or the leaves are the parts of these plants that are most often consumed. However, the seeds or roots of some of these vegetables are also edible. Incorporating some of these cruciferous vegetables into your diet may help lower your risk for cancer:

  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Wasabi
  • Collard greens
  • Bok choi
  • Brussels sprout
  • Arugula
  • Cauliflower
  • Mustard (leaves and seeds)
  • Turnips
  • Horseradish
  • Rutabaga
  • Kale
  • Radish
  • Watercress

What is the Link Between Cruciferous Vegetables and Cancer?

Cruciferous vegetables are packed with nutrients that are believed to lower a persons risk for several types of cancers, including prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, and breast cancer. This includes the carotenoids zeaxanthin, lutein, and beta-carotene as well as folate and vitamins C, E, and K. They are also rich in minerals and an excellent source of fiber which is well known for preventing colorectal cancer.

This group of vegetables is also a good dietary source of glucosinolates which also has cancer-fighting properties. When intact, the glucosinolates are not effective, but when they are broken down through chewing, processing, and pests, they then make contact with the myrosinase enzyme and initiate a process that releases specific chemicals that can prevent cancer.

cruciferous vegetables prevent cancer el paso tx.

How Cruciferous Vegetables Prevent Cancer

There are three primary ways that cruciferous vegetables can prevent cancer. Researchers have found substantial evidence that shows when they are part of a healthy, clean, low-fat diet, a persons risk of cancer can be decreased.

  • Glucosinolates These are chemicals that contain sulfur and are present in all cruciferous vegetables, giving them their trademark bitter flavor and pungent aroma. When this substance is broken down by chewing, preparation, or digestion, it forms certain compounds (indole-3-carbinol and sulforaphane) that scientists have identified as having anticancer properties. They do this by impeding the development or growth of cancer. Studies have looked at this effect on mice and rats and found that it is particularly useful in specific organs. Researchers are also looking at other ways the substances can prevent cancer. When working in the body, they:
    • Have anti-inflammatory properties
    • Aid in preventing DNA damage to cells
    • Inhibit the formation of blood vessels in tumors
    • Are antibacterial and antiviral
    • Inhibit the migration of tumor cells, thus halting metastasis
    • Cause cancerous cells to die
    • Aid in causing carcinogens to become inactiveBioactive components Some studies have shown that the bioactive components of these veggies can affect the biomarkers of processes related to cancer in the human body such as decreasing abnormal cell growth. Genetic encoding of glutathione S-transferase Glutathione S-transferase is an enzyme that helps the body metabolize and eliminate isothiocyanates. This is important because isothiocyanates prevent the activation of carcinogens, increase the speed at which the carcinogens are removed from the body, and counteract the dangerous effects of active carcinogens.

Best Ways to Consume Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables are at their most nutritious and have the greatest cancer-fighting properties when they are raw. When the vegetables are chopped and chewed they release the most cancer-fighting chemicals. Likewise, when they are cooked, they lose a great deal of those properties. Steaming or cooking the vegetables very lightly for less than 5 minutes will allow them to retain some of those cancer-fighting properties.

So, make sure that you incorporate cruciferous vegetables into your diet at least three times a week. If you need further guidance, ask our doctor of chiropractic Dr. Jimenez. We're here to help!

How Chiropractic Can Help Prevent Migraine Headaches

How Chiropractic Can Help Prevent Migraine Headaches

Migraines affect an estimated 38 million people, including children, in the United States alone. Worldwide, that total jumps to 1 billion. Migraine ranks number three among common illnesses in the world and number six among disabling illnesses. More than 90% of people who suffer from migraines cannot function normally or work during an attack.

A migraine attack is often debilitating and extremely painful. It is also challenging to stop once it starts. The best treatment for migraines is to prevent them from ever occurring. Several methods work for some people, but chiropractic is a popular preventative measure that many people have found to help them be migraine-free.

Migraine Symptoms

A severe headache is the first thing people think of regarding migraines, but there are other symptoms which include:

  • Pain located on one or both sides of the head
  • Photophobia (sensitivity to light)
  • Blurred vision or other visual disturbances
  • Pain that is pulsing or throbbing
  • Lightheaded and possibly fainting
  • Hypersensitivity to smell, taste, or touch
  • Loss of motor function or, in more severe cases, partial paralysis (such as with hemiplegic migraine)

Some migraineurs experience auras before an attack, usually around 20 to 60 minutes. This can give the patient time to take specific measures to stop the attack or minimize it. However, it is still the right course of action to incorporate certain activities into your lifestyle to prevent migraines.

Causes of Migraines

Doctors don’t know the exact causes of migraines, but research does indicate that certain triggers can initiate an attack. Some of the more common migraine triggers include:

  • Foods  Processed foods, salty foods, aged cheeses, and chocolate.
  • Beverages  Coffee and other caffeinated drinks as well as alcohol (particularly wine)
  • Hormonal changes occur mainly in women, usually during menopause, menstruation, and pregnancy.
  • Food additives  Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and aspartame, as well as certain dyes.
  • Stress  Environmental, stress at home or work, or illness that puts strain on the body.
  • Sleep problems  Getting too much sleep or not getting enough sleep.
  • Sensory stimuli  Sun glare and bright lights, strong smells like secondhand smoke and perfume, and specific tactile stimulation.
  • Medication  Vasodilators (nitroglycerin) and oral contraceptives.
  • Physical exertion  Intense exercise or other physical exertion.
  • Jet lag
  • Weather changes
  • Skipping meals
  • Change in barometric pressure

Some research also shows a possible serotonin component. Serotonin is integral to regulating pain in the nervous system.

During a migraine attack, serotonin levels drop. Migraine Treatments

Migraine treatments are classified as either abortive or preventative. Abortive medications primarily treat symptoms, usually pain relief. They are taken once a migraine attack has already begun and are designed to stop it. Preventative medications are typically taken daily to reduce the frequency of migraines and the severity of attacks. Most of these medications can only be obtained by prescription, and many have unpleasant side effects.

A migraine specialist can recommend medications and other treatments, including acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic, acupressure, herbal remedies, and lifestyle changes. Adequate sleep, relaxation exercises, and dietary changes may also help.

Chiropractic for Migraines

A chiropractor will use a variety of techniques when treating migraines. Spinal manipulation of one of the most common, usually focusing on the cervical spine. By bringing the body into balance, it can relieve the pain and prevent future migraines. They may also recommend vitamin, mineral, and herbal supplements and lifestyle changes, which usually eliminate triggers.

One migraine study found that 72% of sufferers benefitted from chiropractic treatment with noticeable or substantial improvement. This is proof that chiropractic is an effective treatment for relieving pain and preventing migraines.
