Triggers and Acute Lower Back Pain El Paso, Texas

Triggers and Acute Lower Back Pain El Paso, Texas

Sometimes low back pain comes out of nowhere, but that sudden twinge in the lower back does have a cause. With some cases, theres a trigger, like picking up a heavy object/furniture from an awkward position. But sometimes it can be a mystery and a challenge to diagnose.

It is important to know the cause of lower back pain to figure out the proper treatment plan. Otherwise, one could receive treatment for the wrong diagnosis and possibly exacerbate the existing injury.

Why do I need to know what triggers my back pain

Knowing what triggers back pain is the first step toward prevention and how to treat it.

Muscle spasms can stop you cold, and so I’m sure you dont want another one.

Acute Back Pain

Acute low back pain typically comes on suddenly and lasts for a short time.

It often resolves on its own with self-care and a little time.

Back pain that lasts longer than three months, is considered chronic.

Chronic back pain can be more complex and require doctor/spine specialist-directed treatment, like physical therapy.

Lower Back Pain Is Common

Over 90 percent of adults will have some type of low back pain during their life.

It happens to be the number one cause of job disability globally and the leading contributor to missed work.

Lower back pain happens more often, compared to mid or upper back pain because of the location and all of the movement.

The lower back supports the upper body’s weight.

The low back known as the (lumbar spine) absorbs and distributes all of the forces and stress when we move:

  • Walking
  • Standing
  • Rest
  • Sitting
  • Sleeping

Spinal and abdominal muscles that are weakened heighten injury risk.

These factors combined make the lower back vulnerable to painful spinal conditions.

Common Triggers

When the lumbar spine:

  • Muscles
  • Tendons
  • Ligaments

And other connective tissues get:

  • Pulled
  • Strained
  • Sprained

Is when lower back pain happens.

Small tears in the disc can also contribute to back pain.

Basically, any number of activity and non-activity can cause damage to the spinal discs depending on the movement.

A study published in Arthritis Care & Research saw 999 people from 300 clinics in Australia, to examine their pain triggers.

The most common triggers include:

Manual tasks performed in an awkward posture

This includes:

  • Lifting boxes with the back and not bending the knees
  • Lifting something too heavy
  • Moderate physical activity
  • Vigorous physical activity

High intense strength training, long bike rides without proper conditioning, handling people or animals, and picking up children can be triggers and cause injury.

Other triggers include:

  • Overstretching
  • Twisting
  • And Trauma

From:

  • Falls
  • Vehicle accidents
  • Sports

Triggers You Might Not Know About

Although we don’t think about it being Distracted can increase the odds of low back pain.

When we’re not paying attention, we are more likely to lift and carry something too far from our body or distribute the weight unevenly.

Feeling tired and Fatigued is associated with lower back pain.

Getting the proper amount of sleep is vital to restore our bodies to optimal performance.

When we don’t sleep the right amount of hours we make our bodies more susceptible to injury.

Treatment

Thankfully most cases are not serious and typically resolve within a few days to, four weeks healing on its own.

But if not, then there are these conservative treatments that can help you feel better and speed up healing.

Continue to Move Around

Depending on how much pain your body will allow, keep doing regular activities and exercise, as best as you can.

Activity increases blood flow, that moves oxygen and minerals/nutrients through the body.

Activity and movement help reduce muscle tension and inflammation.

Heat/Ice

This will not cure a strain or sprain, but they do help in pain reduction.

Heat helps loosen tight muscles.

This can be done by making warm compresses by soaking a towel in hot water.

Fold it to the size you need and wrap it around your lower back up to 20 minutes. Then rest, massage and re-apply.

Therapy

Physical and manual therapies like:

If the pain is intense and interferes with daily activities, a chiropractor/physical therapist can offer exercises and stretches to:

  • Improve posture
  • Increase mobility
  • Correct muscle imbalances

Acute lower back pain can stop you cold with its intensity.

Understanding triggers can take steps to maintain a healthy spine and avoid unpleasant surprises.

Medication

Both acetaminophen (Tylenol) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can relieve pain.

These need to be taken, specifically as directed by your doctor. We’ve seen the opioid crisis going on and now this type of treatment is now a last resort. Various medical associations are now pushing towards natural and alternative therapies before turning to medication.

Prolonged use of NSAIDs (Aleve, Advil) can be associated with an upset stomach, kidney damage and gastrointestinal conditions and bleeding, among other conditions.

Tips For Reducing Back Pain During Pregnancy El Paso, TX.

During my first pregnancy, I was in great shape as a yoga instructor. I thought I was ready but juggling:

  • Pregnancy
  • Birth
  • Early motherhood

I realized how intense the weight gain was, especially on my:

  • Back
  • Neck
  • Hips

This turned into a cycle of:

  • Gaining baby weight
  • Losing baby weight

Along with repetitive movements of:

  • Lifting
  • Swaying
  • Hunching over to nurse
  • Bathing

I experienced body discomfort and back pain that I never thought I would feel!

Then came my second pregnancy, and the pain was there again. This time targeting my:

  • Hips
  • Neck
  • Shoulders

And of course, the back pain was there in full force, which discouraged and saddened me.

I was sick of feeling uncomfortable and realized it was time to find a solution I could use at home and every day of my pregnancy.

I surrounded myself with top professionals, absorbed their knowledge and utilized their tips and tools into my daily routine.

During pregnancy when your back hurts it is because you are not using the muscle groups that stabilize the body’s frame.

As you gain pregnancy weight, the discomfort can worsen.

My Pilates instructor showed me deep core strengthening and glute exercises to do at home, which immediately helped alleviate my back pain.

These exercises can get those muscle groups to respond. Therefore, instead of the back doing the work, these muscles take over.

  • Bridges with a rear-end squeeze at the top
  • Pelvic tilts to gently awaken the transverse abdominals

Side-stretching helps expand the spine

Stretching the sides of your body allows for space between the ribs.

It alleviates back pain and improves breathing.

As pregnancy advances, the middle area of your body can feel tighter.

This is one reason you may feel out of breath.

My massage therapist shared a stretch that helps to open up this space.

  • Sit cross-legged and raise both arms toward the ceiling
  • Put your right hand down and, with the left hand, reach over toward the right side of the room
  • Repeat on the opposite side
  • Take deep breaths

The goal is to reach up and over to improve breathing.

Legs up the wall

Your legs, knees, and feet will begin to feel the effects of added bodyweight and pressure.

A restorative yoga pose that involves placing a yoga mat or blanket as a back cushion next to a wall.

  • Lie on the floor against the wall
  • Let your legs climb up the wall
  • Stretch arms outward and turn your palms up
  • Take deep breaths

This reverses the blood flow and gives your joints a much-needed break.

Hang out and enjoy.

If the back of your legs feel like it’s too much to stretch all the way up, bring the soles of your feet together and let the knees butterfly out to the sides.

Make it a Daily habit

It can be a struggle to do daily stretches and exercises, especially as things get crazier and busier.

But this is what makes these home exercises/tips work.

Get into the habit to make it more personal and make body-care a top priority.

Children and life will try to take over but your wellness needs to come first before the care of others.

Living with back pain is something I would not recommend trying. Instead, see a chiropractor/doctor and learn these exercises and more tips so you can work out the discomfort/pain whenever it presents and enjoy your pregnancy to the fullest.

Low back pain, or LBP, is a normal health problem between the muscles, nerves, and bones of the spine. Pain could differ, often called a dull persistent pain or any sudden sharp sense. Low back pain could be classified by length and severity, including acute (pain lasting less than 6 weeks ), sub-chronic (6 to 12 months ), or chronic (over 12 weeks ). The status could be further categorized together with the inherent causes as both bodily, non-mechanical, or referred pain. The signs of lower back pain may generally improve in a couple of weeks, but a few instances may require further treatment. In virtually all episodes of lower back pain, a certain underlying cause is not identified or properly cared for, and health care professionals might feature it to muscle or joint strain.

What’s Afoot

The human body is an intricate machine, and everything is connected so when something goes wrong in one area, it can cause problems in other areas. The back carries a lot of the stress in the body so when there is a problem with the hips, knees, or a foot dysfunction, the spine can bear at least some of the brunt of the pain and other effects.

Back Pain or Hip Pain? Getting to the Root of the Problem El Paso, TX.

Back Pain or Hip Pain? Getting to the Root of the Problem El Paso, TX.

Pain in the low back, hips, and other areas of the lower body, the source isnt always easy to pinpoint.

Pain may originate in the lumbar spine (low back) the hip or both.

Its important that a doctor identify the source of the problem, in order to create the correct treatment plan.

Because the hips and lower spine are located so close it can be easy to mistake back pain for hip pain the other way around.

Most low back pain and hip pain share a common cause:

Normal wear and tear on the body due to aging or triggered by overuse injuries (possibly referred to as degeneration or degenerative changes).

  • Lumbar sprains
  • Strains
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Herniated discs

Are common degenerative culprits behind low back and hip pain.

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Back Pain or Hip Pain? Getting to the Root of the Problem El Paso, TX.

Symptoms that the Hip Is the Root

One of the biggest symptoms that pain is caused by a problem in the hip is groin pain.

The hip joint is located behind the groin, which is why groin pain typically means the hip is the root.

In some cases, the groin pain will radiate downward toward the knee.

Another symptom that the hip is the source is pain around or over the hip joint.

Hip problems can also refer pain to the low back.

This is what causes the confusion over where the true source of the pain.

Hip-related pain is most often caused by osteoarthritis in the hip.

Osteoarthritis in the hip can cause pain in the:

  • Buttocks
  • Front of the thighs
  • Knees

Limping when walking and a reduced range of motion in the hips, along with pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest.

Osteoarthritis is the most common cause, hip pain can also come from:

  1. Piriformis syndrome will cause dull, mild pain in the low back, buttocks and can radiate down the leg.
  2. Hip pain attributed to avascular necrosis will be severe and constant.
  3. Sacroiliac joint pain could be attributed to the hip and the low back because the sacroiliac joints connect the sacrum in the spine to the hip bones.

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Back Pain or Hip Pain? Getting to the Root of the Problem El Paso, TX.

Symptoms that the Spine Is the Root

Where groin pain is a sign that the pain is linked to the hip when the pain is above the waistline and travels down the body usually indicates a low back issue.

Among the most common degenerative conditions that affect the lumbar spine are:

  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis

Pain is caused by irritating the low back nerves, which result in pain shooting down the leg/s and:

  • Weakness
  • Numbness
  • Reduced range of motion

Arthritis of the spine brings on pain usually when first getting out of bed or rising up after sitting.

It usually improves after beginning to move.

Spinal stenosis or nerve pressure compression pain worsens with prolonged standing or walking, while relief comes with sitting.

Getting to the Root

When there is pain in the lower body and are not sure whether it’s the back or hip, the first course of action is to visit your doctor or a chiropractor.

They will review your medical history and perform a series of physical exams, such as various movements to get an idea of what is going on.

Your primary doctor may refer you to a doctor/chiropractor who specializes in hip or spinal conditions to make an accurate diagnosis.

The doctor will ask you to describe the:

  • Pain
  • Location
  • When it worsens
  • When it’s relieved
  • What the pain feels like (e.g., sharp, dull).

The doctor may have you perform various movements to observe your biomechanics.

The goal is to determine what movements trigger the pain.

One such maneuver called the Flexion Abduction External Rotation (FABER) test helps determine if the pain is sourced in the hip and possible sacroiliac joint problems.

For this test, you lie on your back while flexing and rotating the hips.

The doctor will also palpate (press) on the pain area.

The doctor may order image scans, like x-ray, MRI that can reveal the root of the spine or hip problem.

The Source

Treating Back Pain and Hip Pain

Once the pain is identified whether the hip or low back, your doctor will work with you to create a treatment plan.

This regimen includes a specially designed physical therapy program to teach:

  • Movements
  • Stretches
  • Physical therapy

To help alleviate symptoms and prevent their return.

Once the nature of the pain is determined, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes:

For both spine and hip pain, surgery is rarely necessary and only utilized as the last-resort option.

Labrum Tear Hip Treatment El Paso, TX Chiropractor

Andrew Hutchinson turned into chiropractic care and Crossfit rehab after suffering a high ankle sprain and a hip labrum tear for which he moved through with surgery to repair it. After being bedridden for weeks so as to correctly recuperate, Andrew Hutchinson transitioned to chiropractic care and Crossfit rehab to regain his strength, freedom, and flexibility before returning to perform. Although he has suffered other sports accidents, Andrew Hutchinson continues to trust in chiropractic care and Crossfit rehab to keep his spine properly aligned and maintain overall health and wellbeing.

Labrum tears in athletes may occur from a single event or recurring trauma. Running may lead to labrum tears as a result of labrum being used more for weight-bearing and taking excessive forces while at the end-range motion of the leg. Sporting activities are likely causes, especially the ones that require frequent hip rotation or pivoting to some wealthy femur as in ballet or hockey. Continuous hip rotation places increased pressure on the capsular tissue and injury to the iliofemoral ligament. This then causes hip instability placing increased stress on the labrum and resulting in a cool labrum tear.

What’s Afoot

Muscle imbalances in the hip, such as tight hip flexors, can cause low back pain or at least contribute to it. When the hip flexor muscles are too tight, it causes what is known as an anterior pelvic tilt. In other words, the muscles cause an anterior pull on the pelvis. This affect posture and throws the entire lower body out of alignment. It can also affect the knees and feet if left untreated.

NCBI Resources

Hip flexors can become too tight if the person sits for extended periods of time or engages in activities like cycling and jogging. A chiropractor can guide you through exercises that will help release the tight muscles and stop the micro spams that occur as a result. They will also assess your knees, feet, and ankles to ensure that the issue has not through them out of alignment as well. Correcting the cause of the problem will often correct the associated issues and resolve the pain allowing you to return to your normal activities.

Peripheral Neuropathy Causes & Symptoms | El Paso, TX (2019)

Peripheral Neuropathy Causes & Symptoms | El Paso, TX (2019)

The human nervous system is made up of two parts: the central nervous system, which includes the brain and the spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system, which includes the connection nerves running from the brain and the spinal cord to the rest of the human body, including the hands and the feet.

Many patients with neuropathy may experience a variety of painful symptoms due to nerve damage or injury. But, with the proper treatment approach, neuropathy can be effectively treated and even reversed. Diagnosis of neuropathy is fundamental towards proper treatment. Dr. Alex Jimenez, a chiropractor in El Paso, TX, can help patients with neuropathy.

Peripheral Neuropathy Causes & Symptoms | El Paso, TX (2019)

Neuropathy is a medical term used to describe a collection of general diseases or malfunctions which affect the nerves. The causes of neuropathy, or nerve damage, can vary greatly among each individual and these may be caused by a number of different diseases, injuries, infections, and even vitamin deficiency states. However, neuropathy can most commonly affect the nerves that control the motor and sensory nerves. Because the human body is composed of many different kinds of nerves which perform different functions, nerve damage is classified into several types.

Neuropathy can also be classified according to the location of the nerves being affected and according to the disease-causing it. For instance, neuropathy caused by diabetes is called diabetic neuropathy. Furthermore, depending on which nerves are affected will depend on the symptoms that will manifest as a result. Below we will discuss several specific types of neuropathies clinically treated by chiropractors, physical therapists and physical medicine doctors alike, as well as briefly describing their causes and their symptoms.

Peripheral neuropathy, which is often simply referred to as neuropathy, is a state that happens when your nerves become damaged or injured, oftentimes simply disrupted. Its estimated that neuropathy affects roughly 2.4 percent of the general populace and approximately 8 percent of people older than age 55. However, this quote doesnt include people affected by neuropathy caused by physical trauma to the nerves.

Types

Neuropathy can affect any of the three types of peripheral nerves:

  • Sensory nerves, which transmit messages from the sensory organs, eyes, nose to the brain
  • Motor nerves, which track the conscious movement of the muscles
  • Autonomic nerves, which regulate the involuntary functions of the body

Sometimes, neuropathy will only impact one nerve. This is medically referred to as mononeuropathy and instances of it include:

  • Ulnar neuropathy, which affects the elbow
  • Radial neuropathy, which affects the arms
  • Peroneal neuropathy, which affects the knees
  • Femoral neuropathy, which affects the thighs
  • Cervical neuropathy, which affects the neck

Sometimes, two or more isolated nerves in separate regions of the body can become damaged, injured or disrupted, resulting in mono neuritis multiplex neuropathy. Most often, however, multiple peripheral nerves malfunction at the same time, a condition called polyneuropathy. According to the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, or the NINDS, there are over 100 kinds of peripheral neuropathies.

Causes

Neuropathies are often inherited from birth or they develop later in life. The most frequent inherited neuropathy is the neurological disease Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, which affects 1 in 2,500 people in the USA. Although healthcare professionals are sometimes not able to pinpoint the exact reason for an acquired neuropathy, medically referred to as idiopathic neuropathy, there are many known causes for them, including systemic diseases, physical trauma, infectious diseases, and autoimmune disorders.

A systemic disease is one which affects the whole body. The most frequent systemic cause behind peripheral neuropathy is diabetes, which can lead to chronically high blood glucose levels that harm nerves.

Other systemic issues can cause neuropathy, including:
  • Kidney disorders, which permit high levels of nerve-damaging toxic chemicals to flow in the blood
  • Toxins from exposure to heavy metals, including arsenic, lead, mercury, and thallium
  • Certain drugs and/or medications, including anti-cancer medications, anticonvulsants, antivirals, and antibiotics
  • Chemical imbalances because of liver ailments
  • Hormonal diseases, including hyperthyroidism, which disturbs metabolic processes, potentially inducing cells and body parts to exert pressure on the nerves
  • Deficiencies in vitamins, such as E, B1 (thiamine), B6 (pyridoxine), B12, and niacin, that can be vital for healthy nerves
  • Alcohol abuse, which induces vitamin deficiencies and might also directly harm nerves
  • Cancers and tumors that exert damaging pressure on nerve fibers and pathways
  • Chronic inflammation, which can damage protective tissues around nerves, which makes them more vulnerable to compression or vulnerable to getting inflamed and swollen
  • Blood diseases and blood vessel damage, which may damage or injure nerve tissue by decreasing the available oxygen supply

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Peripheral Neuropathy Causes & Symptoms | El Paso, TX (2019)

Signs and Symptoms of Neuropathy

Depending on the reason and unique to each patient, signs, and symptoms of neuropathy can include:

  • Pain
  • Tingling
  • Burning/prickling sensations
  • Increased sensitivity to touch
  • Muscle weakness
  • Temporary or permanent numbness;
  • Paralysis
  • Dysfunction in glands or organs
  • Impairment in urination and
  • Sexual function

Such signs and symptoms are dependent on whether autonomic, sensory, or motor nerves, as well as a combination of them, are ultimately affected. Autonomic nerve damage can influence physiological functions like blood pressure or create gastrointestinal problems and issues. Damage or dysfunction in the sensory nerves may impact sensations and sense of equilibrium or balance, while harm to motor nerves may affect movement and reflexes. When both sensory and motor nerves are involved, the condition is known as sensorimotor polyneuropathy.

Complications

Peripheralneuropathymay result in several complications, as a result of disease or its symptoms. Numbness from the ailment can allow you to be less vulnerable to temperatures and pain, making you more likely to suffer from burns and serious wounds. The lack of sensations in the feet, for instance, can make you more prone to developing infections from minor traumatic accidents, particularly for diabetics, who heal more slowly than other people, including foot ulcers and gangrene.

Furthermore, muscle atrophy may cause you to develop particular physical disfigurements, such as pes cavus, a condition marked by an abnormally high foot arch, and claw-like deformities in the feet and palms.

Pagets Disease and Spine Health El Paso, Texas

Pagets Disease and Spine Health El Paso, Texas

Pagets disease, aka osteitis deformans, is the second most common bone disorder in the United States right behind osteoporosis.

Pagets disease happens when bone cells dont function properly and result in:

  • Deformed
  • Enlarged
  • Fragile bones

The bones of the spine (vertebrae) are susceptible to this condition.

Pagets Disease and The Spine

Pagets disease begins with a malfunction of two bone cell types: osteoblasts and osteoclasts.

Bones are constantly going through a regenerative process where osteoclasts break down old bone, and osteoblasts build new bone.

When the cells work together in a balanced way, the bones stay strong.

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Pagets Disease and Spine Health El Paso, Texas

With Pagets disease, the osteoclasts break down old bone faster than normal. This forces osteoblasts to work harder and longer.

When this happens, the new bone is placed improperly and leads to deformity.

The newly built bone tends to be more fragile than healthy bone and has a greater risk of fracturing.

Pagets most commonly affects the spinal bones, specifically the:

Pagets disease can involve a single bone meaning it is monostotic or multiple bones or polyostotic.

Monostotic cases make up about 10- to 35-percent of total occurrences.

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Pagets Disease and Spine Health El Paso, Texas

Paget’s typically affects people over the age of 55, and 3% of that population develop the disease.

Spinal Symptoms

Many have Pagets in their spine dont know it.

The most common symptom is bone pain in the neck and/or back.

The pain can feel:

  • Dull
  • Persistent
  • Worse at night

It can cause spinal cord compression, neurologic symptoms like:

  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Difficulty walking
  • Bowel
  • Bladder problems

Causes

The cause of Pagets disease is still unknown but research scientists believe genetics and viral infection contribute to the condition.

Spine-Related Complications

The telltale of Pagets is the bone deformities that can result in painful spine conditions, which include:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Kyphosis

The disease makes the spine prone to fractures because of the weakened new bone.

Also, vertebral body compression fractures can occur and cause spinal cord compression and nerve pain.

Types of spinal arthritis that can coexist with Pagets include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Spondylosis or spinal osteoarthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis

It has also been linked to spinal tumors that include osteosarcoma.

Diagnosing and Treatment

If symptoms are obvious, likehunchback brought on from kyphosis then a physical exam could help determine the diagnosis.

Most cases require imaging tests to get a closer look at the bones.

  • A doctor/chiropractor may order an x-ray of the spine to confirm a diagnosis and illuminate any bone problems.
  • For early stages, a bone scan will pick up initial deformities better than an x-ray.
  • CT scans or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can also be used.

Blood testing can be important in the diagnosis

Known as a bone-specific alkaline phosphatase test it can detect when the bones are regenerating too fast.

It’s not only used during diagnosis but also during the treatment in helping to monitor patients as they go through the therapy.

It is treated with medications called bisphosphonates.

These medications help return normal function to the osteoclasts and osteoblasts.

Bisphosphonates can manage the disease and reduce symptoms, but do not cure the disease.

Living with Pagets

Advanced cases can cause spine problems, which includes spinal fractures.

Most with Pagets disease have preferable outcomes.

When Paget’s disease is managed with medication, regular doctor visits, chiropractic care, and proper diet, then there shouldnt be a problem in achieving a healthy quality of life.

Several studies show that chiropractic care is a very effective treatment for back pain. The chiropractor will perform spinal manipulation to bring the spine (and body) into proper alignment. He may also offer advice on exercises, stretching, and ways to improve posture as well as recommending lifestyle changes and what to look for in supportive shoes. Chiropractics whole-body approach not only helps relieve back pain, but it also helps prevent it as well.

This allows the patient to gain whole body benefits from chiropractic.

Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) El Paso, TX.

Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) El Paso, TX.

Before and after spine surgery the surgeon and medical staff prepare you for recovery. The recovery process can take a long time and be extremely challenging.

Pain after spine surgery is normal, but how to tell if its beyond the typical pain during recovery?

What indicates that the surgery failed?

Chiropractor Dr. Alex Jimenez has dealt with this issue throughout his career and discusses symptoms associated with failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS, also known as failed back surgery (FBS) or post-laminectomy syndrome).

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) El Paso, TX.

Back Pain the most common symptom

Chronic back pain is the most common symptom from failed back surgery.

With FBSS, chronic pain in one patient can be very different from pain in another.

People with FBSS can experience a range of different types of pain based on:

  • Spinal disorder
  • Spinal procedure
  • The underlying cause of failed back surgery syndrome

Types of back and neck pain people with failed back surgery may experience. Some may have one or more types.

Chronic pain:

  • Sustained pain that lasts for more than 12 weeks.
  • Chronic pain is the opposite of acute pain, which is short-termsevere pain.
  • Acute pain is expected during spine surgery recovery but should fade during the healing.

Nociceptive pain:

Localized pain that can be dull or sharp.

This is the type of pain patients may experience immediately after surgery

Example: The pain felt around where the incision was made.

When most people think of pain, nociceptive pain is the type.

Neuropathic pain (neuropathy):

Nerve-related pain is caused by damage to the nerves or spinal cord.

Neuropathic pain shoots and moves around, thus affecting large areas of the body.

Examples of this type of pain include:

  • Numbness
  • Burning
  • Tingling
  • Weakness
  • Abnormal sensations (called paresthesia)

Radicular pain (radiculopathy):

A branch of nerve pain (neuropathy) is called radiculopathy, or radicular pain.

Radicular pain radiates from one area to another.

Examples include from the:

  • Low back
  • Down the buttocks
  • Legs
  • Feet

And then starts all over again, or goes in a different order.

Other symptoms:

The original symptoms return:

When the symptoms that put the patient in the surgery room return, then there is a definite possibility of failed back surgery.

New pain presents:

New pain, meaning pain in a different part of the spine or a different type merits a discussion with your doctor.

Mobility Reduced :

It does take time to recover and that process can affect:

  • Endurance
  • Flexibility
  • Movement

However, if mobility or limitation is different from what was talked about with the surgeon or develops after recovery, then it should be discussed with your doctor.

Example: A limited range of motion in the neck or low back.

Headaches begin to present:

If headaches were not an original part of your medical history, this may point to a nerve problem.

Nerve Symptoms & Quality of Life

Neuropathic pain/ neuropathy or nerve-related pain is the most complex, debilitating, and difficult-to-treat.

People who experience this type of pain find it lowers their quality of life.

An online survey of 1,000-2000 patients that underwent low back surgery responded and revealed the following:

  1. 94% of respondents reported post-surgery low back pain
  2. 71.1% dull achiness
  3. 69.8% numbness
  4. 43.3% cold sensations
  5. 35.3% paresthesia (eg, burning, tingling, pricking sensations)

A separate study noted that nerve-related pain suffered by people with FBSS is more life-altering than pain caused by joint and nerve disorders.

Patients with FBSS and neuropathic pain go through higher levels of pain and have less quality of life/physical function compared with people with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia.

FBS Symptoms Emergency Treatment

After surgery, it can be difficult to tell whether the pain is within the bounds of normal recovery pain.

At follow-up appointments ask questions about the progress of your recovery and about any concerns.

Pain after surgery is normal, but there are some signs and symptoms that merit emergency attention.

If you experience any of the red flag symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

  • New weakness
  • Difficulty walking
  • Electric pain in the lower body
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Loss of bowel or bladder function

This can be a sign of a spinal nerve disorder called cauda equina syndrome.

Symptoms of Failed Back Surgery Syndrome Are Different for Every Patient

  • Every patient goes through a unique surgical experience and if it fails, patients may experience unique symptoms.
  • Because failed back surgery has several possible causes, the symptoms are going to be different for each patient.
  • Before you are discharged and even before you go under, ask your surgeon questions about what to expect during the recovery process.
  • Educating yourself with possible expectations during recovery, youll be best positioned to know when things arent going as they should.

Sandra Rubio discusses Dr. Alex Jimenez and his team will help relieve your sciatica symptoms. Chiropractic care can improve pain and discomfort as well as reduce irritation and inflammation brought on by sciatica. Additionally, a chiropractor such as Dr. Jimenez can also offer nutritional and fitness tips for sciatic nerve pain. Other treatment procedures, such as deep-tissue massage, can help alleviate sciatica symptoms. Dr. Alex Jimenez is the homeopathic, noninvasive option for sciatic nerve disease and its related symptoms.

Sciatica is generally caused by the compression of lumbar or thoracic nerves or by compression of the sciatic nerve. When sciatica is caused by compression of a lower back nerve root, it’s called lumbar radiculopathy. This can happen due to a spinal disc bulge or spinal disk herniation (a herniated intervertebral disc), or by roughening, extending, or misalignment (spondylolisthesis) of the fascia, or as a result of degenerated discs that could reduce the diameter of the lateral foramen by which nerve roots exit the spine.

Sciatica is characterized by a shooting pain that originates in the lower back and travels down through the hip, buttock, and back of the leg. The pain can be so severe that it inhibits mobility and can prevent people from working, taking care of their home, or just enjoying their life. Doctors have treated the condition with medications and some invasive therapies, but chiropractic treatments have been found to be extremely effective in alleviating the pain and curing the condition.
