Metabolic Syndrome affects many people. In fact, more than a quarter of the United States has it! Metabolic Syndrome is not a disease, but instead a cluster of disorders. These disorders on their own are not necessarily alarming but when you have more than one, the body starts to feel the repercussions.

Symptoms

Those with metabolic syndrome often suffer from frequent headaches, inflammation, nausea, fatigue, joint pain, and many more. On top of these symptoms, metabolic syndrome can put individuals at a higher risk for Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease, Stroke, Obesity, Sleep Apnea, and Kidney Disease.

Risk Factors

Individuals who have an “apple or pear” body shape, are at an increased risk for developing metabolic syndrome. There are no “obvious” signs of metabolic syndrome, but rather one with metabolic syndrome has 3/5 of these risk factors.

  • High Blood Pressure, measuring 130/85
  • High Triglycerides

What Can You Do About It?

Of course, no one wants to be left feeling sick and stranded. There are ways to help prevent metabolic syndrome at home. Below there are five tips for each risk factor and how to prevent/reduce your symptoms.

Two types of muscles exist in the body, and they are voluntary or the ones that we can move and involuntary or those that move on their own like the digestive and heart muscles. Both can be made stronger and more resilient through exercise and physical activity. We’re shall focus on the voluntary muscles that move and support the spine.

When there is a lack of muscle strength and flexibility it can create an environment for back pain. The muscles connect to the bones through the tendons. When contracted the signal concentrates through the tendon, and moves the bone/s. The tendons are attached to the bones. When the tendons get inflamed, tendonitis can occur even in the spine.

Muscle layers

Some go deeper while others are more superficial and at the surface. The deeper muscles are the ones that stabilize and secure the bones. The abdominal muscles along with the hips and legs can play a part in back pain/problems.

A doctor might have told you that to have a healthy spine. That is great news, however, we all need to build a strong core, which includes the abdominal muscles, to help stabilize the entire torso. There are four types of abdominal muscles.

The Corset

The deepest is the transversus abdominis, which wraps around your body just like a corset. These muscles contract if you place your hands on your waist and cough. On the sides of your body, there are two sets of oblique muscles. The internal obliques go deeper, while the external obliques are closer to the surface. The obliques enable us to twist and bend from side to side.

The Six-Pack

And of course, there is the rectus abdominis which we all know as the six-pack. These can be sculpted into the washboard abs but they do not help in stabilizing the spine/back. The job of the abs is to pull you forward like when doing sit-ups and crunches.

They do help compress the deeper ab muscles, but to stabilize the spine, you want to strengthen the deepest ab muscles. The corset, internal obliques, and back muscles are the ones you want to work. One of the most effective ab and back workouts is Pilates. It targets all abdominal and spine muscles in a gentle way.

 

Flexors

Within the body are two muscles on either side of the body, called the iliopsoas muscles, or the psoas (so-as). These are the hip and thigh flexors which lift the thighs like when�walking, going upstairs.

When in a stationary position, the psoas enables you to bend forward or flex the hips. When sitting, the psoas stabilizes the spine into an upright position. It is one of the largest and thickest muscles, and it extends from your lumbar vertebrae, crosses in front of each hip, and attaches on the inside top of the thigh bone. When we sit for long periods it constricts or shortens the psoas, which causes soreness/pain when you stand.

 

Layers

Spinal muscles are made up of layers. The deepest are small and are attached one vertebra to another. The deepest level are the interspinalis muscles, which connect the spinous processes; thank them for helping you stretch backward.

The transversospinalis group forms a chevron pattern along the back and helps with side bending, twisting, and assists in back bending. The next layer up is the erector spinae. The main job of this group is bending, but also assist with�bending to the side . When muscle spasms occur, it’s often the erector spinae muscles.

The next level consists of the rhomboids. These are situated between the shoulder blades. Exercise or physical therapy can realign the vertebrae if there is upper back, shoulder and neck pain. The wings on either side of the back are called latissmius dorsi. These stabilize the back and help in doing all kinds of activities, like pull-ups.

Next are the trapezius (traps) muscles that extend from your neck and midback to the shoulders. These muscles help move your neck and lift the shoulder blades. When there is tension, there is a tendency to lift our shoulders, which is what makes these muscles tight and sore. It�s never too late to increase strength and flexibility. Look at activities that you and your friends/family can enjoy and turn them into a regular thing.

It turns out that the brain is continuously changing and gathering information for many life events called neuroplasticity.

Our brain�s neuroplasticity has helped us re-learned simple motor skills by training our bodies to do these functions through rehabilitation from any brain injuries that anyone has been through. However, for some people, when they are recovering from any tragic events can encounter many mental struggles and have a hard time to bounce back. The most common mental struggles are apparently stress.

Stress

Stress is common to our daily lives and can affect our mental and brain health and can be classified into two categories.

Good Stress: Increases energy, strengthens the immune system, immune to other stressful situations.

Bad Stress: High blood pressure, mental health problems, weaker immune system.

These two categories can make our brain go into overdrive, however, once you find out what stresses you out; you can actually find many ways to de-stress and relax. Some examples are taking up a hobby to make your brain learn a new technique, while others are either exercising or talking to someone.

When you�re exercise, not only your whole body feels good, but also you can let out whatever is frustrating you when you put the work in. And when you are done exercising for thirty minutes to an hour, you will feel a whole lot better with a clear head. Other times when you want to keep your brain healthy is to eat some really good food. Some of the food we eat have been known to keep our brain�s motor skill running and making your body feel good.   • Alpha: These waves make us feel calm and be at a resting state.
  • Beta: These waves are split into three sections and each section deals with our waking state: Idling, calculated thoughts and learning new experiences.
  • Gamma: These waves make us have a quiet, calm healthy mind when we need peace and quiet.

The first five brain waves are key for us to have a calm, collected healthy mind when we have to go to sleep. We all know that having 8 hours of sleep is essential for us to have a healthy mind. When we don�t get enough sleep, we feel grouchy or even more tired when we have to get up to go to school or work. So, we have a bit of caffeine to lift our spirits up, and of course, go through the day. Even if we have some time to spare a quick nap for about thirty minutes seems to help our brain process what we learned and then feel refreshed after that nap.

Proper Sleep = Healthy Mind

Like the last paragraph stated, when we don�t get enough sleep, we feel more tired when we have to get up and start our day. However, let�s say someone is very anxious or has depression can suffer from hypersomnia. When a person suffers from hypersomnia, it takes that person�s willpower to actually get up and go out of their bedroom.

What they think is that �I don�t feel well� but; it is actually their brain producing so much glutamate and have less GABA that may be a factor to these triggers.
