Frozen shoulder syndrome is one common condition that affects the joint, limiting mobility and causing pain. When something goes wrong, it can dramatically impact a persons quality of life. The shoulder bears the brunt of a lot of work even in day to day activity. The joint itself is quite complex with a wide range of motion, and that ability can become compromised due to overuse, injury, or age. The goal of the chiropractor is to keep the shoulder moving naturally and ensuring that it is a pain-free. Chiropractic is an effective treatment that helps patients regain range of motion and decrease or eliminate their pain.
What is frozen shoulder?
Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is characterized by pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion of the shoulder joint. It can occur as a result of overuse or after an injury, but can also be caused by diabetes or other diseases or even stroke.
It happens when the tissues that surround the joint become stiff, and scar tissue begins to form in the area. Shoulder movements become painful and difficult. It typically has a gradual onset, then goes away just as slowly. It can take a year or longer for the condition to subside.
What are the symptoms of frozen shoulder?
There are three stages of frozen shoulder and from onset to resolution. It develops gradually and subsides just as slowly with each stage lasting several months.
Stage 1 Freezing Stage The shoulder experiences pain during movement and the
Stage 2 Frozen Stage The shoulder is stiffer, but the pain may begin to decrease. However, using it becomes increasingly difficult.
Stage 3 Thawing Stage The shoulder begins to loosen and the range of motion starts to return.
Some patients may experience worsening pain at night which can lead to sleep problems.
What causes frozen shoulder?
Frozen shoulder often develops when the patient ceases regular use of the joint due to injury, pain, or a chronic health condition. There is no single cause of frozen shoulder; it can be caused by any problem involving the shoulder that prevents the patient from maintaining a full range of motion.
It can also happen when the capsule that encases the connective tissue of the shoulder becomes thick and tight. The movement of the shoulder joint is restricted, impacting its ability to move.
People who are 40 and older tend to be more at risk for frozen shoulder, and it occurs more often in women.
Patients who have had prolonged mobility of the shoulder or their shoulder has been completely immobilized are also at risk. These mobility issues may result from conditions including:
Broken Arm
Surgery recovery
Rotator cuff injury
Stroke
Certain diseases can also place patients in the high-risk category for frozen shoulder. Some disorders that may increase that risk includes:
Cardiovascular disease
Diabetes
Parkinsons disease
Underactive thyroid
Tuberculosis
Overactive thyroid
How can chiropractic help frozen shoulder?
The primary treatment for frozen shoulder involves pain management and preserving the shoulders range of motion. Over the counter pain, relievers like NSAIDs and aspirin are often the first line of treatment. Physical therapy may also be used.
In situations where the symptoms persist, more aggressive treatment may be necessary. Doctors may recommend invasive remedies such as surgery and steroid injections.
However, chiropractic can treat the condition from onset through resolution. Even in instances where the symptoms persist, chiropractic can still be very effective. It can be as effective as more aggressive measures without drugs or invasive procedures. Regular chiropractic care can help return range of motion to the shoulder and return the patients quality of life.
More and more people are choosing chiropractic care for their pack pain and other issues. In fact, they are leaving their traditional medical practices with their pills and surgeries, and opting for the all-natural, non-invasive practice of chiropractic. So why this seemingly sudden exodus over to chiropractic care? It seems that there are several potential reasons.
The American College of Physicians recommends chiropractic for low back pain.
The American College of Physicians published its updated guidelines in 2017, recommending chiropractic and other non-drug treatments, as a first line treatment for chronic and acute lower back pain. Among the treatments listed was spinal manipulation which was strongly recommended. It is very effective when combined with exercises like Pilates, yoga, and tai chi.
Studies show chiropractic to be effective for low back pain.
A study published in the April 2017 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association cited spinal manipulation therapy to be helpful in treating low back pain. The researchers reviewed and analyzed a number of randomized clinical trials that focused on spinal manipulation as a treatment for low back pain. The results were consistent with each, showing that chiropractic treatment, specifically spinal manipulation, was effective in helping low back pain patients with improving function while minimizing pain during treatment courses of up to six weeks.
95% of people who used chiropractic in the past would do it again.
In the 2016 Gallup-Palmer College of Chiropractic Annual Report, 95% of people who have used chiropractic in the past say that it is an effective treatment. Whats more, 97% of people who used a chiropractor in the previous year said that if they had back or neck pain they would seek chiropractic treatment again. More than half of adults who have never seen a chiropractor said they would seek chiropractic treatment if they developed neck or back pain.
In a consumer survey chiropractic was rated higher than all other treatments for back pain.
A Consumer Reports survey published in July 2011 ranked chiropractic higher than Pilates, yoga, and even medications for relieving back pain, osteoarthritis, and neck pain. Many chiropractic patients like the whole-body approach that includes lifestyle recommendations, dietary advice, and supplements for treating pain, immobility, and range of motion issues. Many of the respondents said they opted for the natural treatments like chiropractic in order to avoid the harmful and undesirable side effects of prescription medication.
People are concerned about the opioid epidemic.
With the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) declaring prescription drug (specifically opioid) abuse an epidemic, people are searching for safer, non-drug options. It is startlingly easy for a person to get addicted to pain medication, even while under a doctors care. Because of this, natural treatments are becoming more and more popular to people who want to avoid that potential for addiction or who are at a higher risk for becoming addicted.
With spinal fusion surgery on the rise, patients with back pain are seeking less invasive options.
Spinal fusion surgery has been on a steep rise, increasing by 500% in recent years. Many patients are choosing to seek out natural treatments like chiropractic in order to avoid a surgery this drastic. It also helps that chiropractic looks at the whole person and the patient may get advice on lifestyle habits they need to change, dietary adjustments, and exercises that they can do at home.
ACL injuries are some of the most common sports-related injuries that doctors and chiropractors see. It occurs when one of the ligaments in the knee, the ACL, is torn. If left untreated, it can cause the person to have difficulty moving their knee or controlling its movements because of the breakdown of knee support. When this happens, the bones of the joint often rub against each other. Over time this can cause a condition called chronic ACL deficiency. Osteoarthritis can also occur due to the bones rubbing against each other, eroding the cartilage and meniscus. A chiropractor can help reduce the pain of an ACL injury and help prevent further damage.
What is an ACL Injury?
The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, is a major ligament in the knee that connects the femur (thighbone) to the tibia (shinbone) in the knee joint and provides stability for the knee. An ACL injury does not occur gradually, but instead usually happens suddenly. Most often they happen when a person is playing sports and jumps, stops suddenly, or makes a sudden change in direction. Soccer, basketball, tennis, volleyball, downhill skiing, gymnastics, and football.
What causes an ACL injury?
Sports and fitness activities, typically ones that place stress on the knee, are the most common causes of ACL injury. Specific actions that can lead to the tears include:
Pivoting when the foot is planted firmly
Sudden stops
Cutting or slowing and changing direction suddenly
Landing incorrectly from a jump
Being involved in a collision where the knee is hit or it causes any of the other listed actions
Receiving a direct, sudden, hard hit to the knee
The resulting tear can be minor and small or it can be severe, including a complete tear. In very mild cases, the ligament may be overextended but still intact.
What are the symptoms of an ACL injury?
People who experience an ACL injury will often hear a loud POP when it occurs. Other symptoms of an ACL injury include:
Severe or intense pain
Swelling (begins in the first few hours after the injury)
A feeling that the knee is unstable
A popping sensation in the knee
The knee feels like it gives away when bearing weight
Unable to continue the activity they were doing when the injury occurred
Loss of or decreased range of motion
Who is most at risk of having an ACL injury?
Statistically, when both men and women are participating in the same sports, women are more likely to sustain an ACL injury. Research shows that, generally speaking, women have a tendency to have an imbalance of strength in their thighs. Specifically, the quadriceps, the muscles in the front are typically stronger that the hamstrings, the muscles in the back. Its the hamstrings that work to keep the shinbone from extending too far forward the type of movement that overextends the ACL. Additionally, men and women athlete jump differently with women more likely to land in a manner that places extra stress on the knees.
How is an ACL injury treated?
There are several treatments for an ACL injury. Immediate treatment can help reduce swelling and pain that the injury causes. The R.I.C.E. model is the recommended self-care that the patient can do at home:
Rice
Ice
Compression
Elevation
In some cases, surgery may be recommended, but usually the best course of treatment includes physical therapy and chiropractic care. The knee may be braced and the patient may have to rest for a while before beginning physical therapy. A chiropractor can help not only treat the ACL injury, but also help correct any muscular imbalances that the patient may have.
Every day millions of people use chiropractic care to help manage pain, correct certain health conditions, and to live a healthier, more mobile life and there are some very famous faces among them. A number of celebrities use chiropractic on a regular basis. Here are three very different people with very different reasons for seeing a chiropractor.
Lance Armstrong 7 Time Tour de France Winner
Cycling takes a serious toll on the human body. The repetitive motion of pedaling, combined with the hunched posture as the cyclist leans over the handlebars can lead to back pain, hip lock, and knee problems as well as wrist problems.
Pro cyclist, Lance Armstrong knows well the beating that a body takes when cycling and keeps chiropractor Dr. Jeff Spencer on his staff. The 7 time Tour de France winner has been quoted as saying that the chiropractor is the most important person on the team staff. In fact, in his book, Every Second Counts, he said, The guy who put us all back together was our chiropractor.
Dr. Spencer, who toured with Armstrong and the United States Cycling Team, has work with other pro athletes including NASCAR drivers and PGA golfer Tiger Woods. He helps keep Armstrong on top of his game.
Montel Williams Talk Show Host
One of the most profound testimonials from a celebrity regarding chiropractic comes from talk show host Montel Williams.
In 1999, Williams was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a devastating chronic disease that affects the central nervous system. It often leads to disability in many of the people who have it. The symptoms can range from mild tingling to paralysis or blindness.
He endured severe pain that affected the way he moved, including how he walked. He tried many different treatments, including chiropractic. He credits chiropractic with reducing his pain and mobility issues.
When Williams tried chiropractic for MS, he found that his symptoms decreased significantly, especially his chronic pain. Regular chiropractic treatments help him to stay active which he finds very effective in managing his disease and pain. The whole-body approach that chiropractic offers gave Williams invaluable guidance regarding diet, exercise, and stress management in addition to spinal adjustments. It has made a significant difference in his life.
Gisele Bundchen Victorias Secret Model
We may never know just what Victorias secret is, but Gisele Bundchen, one of the famous faces of the brand, has her own secret to a painless natural birth good prenatal care that includes a top-notch doula/midwife and an exceptional chiropractor. The supermodel, who is married to Tom Brady, made regular visits to her chiropractor throughout her pregnancy.
She wanted to be present during the birth of her child so she opted for a more natural approach to her prenatal care as well as labor and delivery. When it came time for her sons birth, she said that she felt no pain. The birth was reportedly quick and painless.
Chiropractic has long been used by expectant moms to counteract the many changes a womans body experiences throughout pregnancy. When the body is in balance and the spine is aligned, it does indeed make the birth much easier.
Bundchen is not the only supermodel who believes in chiropractic though. Cindy Crawford is also a believer. In fact, her twins have been seeing a chiropractor since they were very young. According to Crawford, she included chiropractic as part of their healthcare because she wanted her kids to be healthy.
Chiropractic can help anyone; you dont have to be a celebrity to enjoy the health benefits. No matter what you do for work or play, it can make a difference in your life too.

Chiropractic care is enjoying an upsurge in popularity as more people are veering away from invasive procedures and pharmaceuticals in favor of more natural treatment options for their pain. A recent Gallup poll for Palmer Chiropractic College confirms this. Of the people surveyed:
More than 35.5 million people said they sought chiropractic care within the 12 months (the Gallup survey was conducted from February 8, 2016, through March 11, 2016).
95% said chiropractic was effective in treating their condition.
89% said they would recommend chiropractic to friends and family.
97% said that they would likely see a chiropractor for neck or back pain.
88% said that chiropractic care is a good value for the money.
Non-Drug Treatments for Back Pain should be Sought First
In April 2017, the American College of Physicians published their updated guidelines for managing and treating low back pain. In it, they recommended seeking non-drug treatments which include the application of heat, exercise, stress reduction, and spinal manipulation before turning to medications. The purpose is to steer patients away from unnecessary medicating and toward healthier, more natural options as the first line of defense in managing low back pain.
Another study published in2017 in the Journal of the American Medical Association supported spinal manipulation as a preferred first treatment option over pharmaceuticals for patients with acute low back pain. While these recommendations are primarily in response to the opioid epidemic, it is also in response to the numerous studies that show chiropractic care is safe and effective for back pain management.
Chiropractic is a Healthier, Safer Option
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that opioid abuse and overdose has reach epidemic proportions. An estimated 91 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. This includes opioids obtained by a prescription from a doctor.
Popular pain medications like oxycodone and hydrocodone have seen steadily increasing abuse, overdose, and death rates over the past two decades. In fact, deaths caused by an overdose of these drugs as well as methadone and others, have quadrupled since 1999.
These medications are highly addictive and have many unpleasant and even dangerous side effects. While most states are taking aggressive steps to curb the over-prescribing of these medications, patients are still finding ways around the prescribing guidelines and restrictions. This is a compelling reason for patients to seek natural, non-medicinal pain relief options first and for their doctors to recommend them.
More People are Turning to Natural Remedies
Many patients are simply getting fed up with invasive treatments and numerous pills, causing them to turn to remedies that are more natural. One benefit of chiropractic and other natural remedies is that they rarely treats only the symptom.
Instead, it addresses the root of the problem to treat the cause. This approach has many benefits beyond being medication free and non-invasive. When the cause of the condition or problem is corrected, it can eliminate other troubling symptoms as well.
Chiropractic is a Healthier, Whole Body Option
A patient who sees their chiropractor for low back pain may find that after a few treatments their headaches, constipation, and digestive issues are also resolved. This is because chiropractic treats the body as a whole, unlike traditional medicine that tends to treat it in parts.
In the body, everything is connected, so a problem in one area could easily cause problems in other areas. By correcting the root of the problem, the patient receives more rounded healthcare.
Where traditional medicine will often opt to prescribe a pain pill for lower back pain, chiropractic care looks for the cause of the back pain and treats the pain symptom from the cause. The chiropractor may advise lifestyle changes, changes in diet, and even recommend supplements. With chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and obesity increasing at an alarming rate, chiropractic care offers a solution that treats the body as a whole in a more natural, safer way.
