Percussive massage guns have become a standard tool in osteopathy, physical and massage therapy, and chiropractic care. They provide rapid bursts of force into muscle tissues to quickly loosen and relax the muscles to alleviate soreness, stiffness and increase circulation. Percussive massager therapy devices can be a healthy part of an exercise and recovery routine. They allow individuals to give themselves quick, powerful massages anytime and anywhere. But they need to be used correctly to reap the benefits.

These devices can be found in stores and online. Many are on the market, making it tough to separate high-quality massagers from low-quality ones. With a little research and advice from a physical therapist or chiropractic professional, they can help the individual get the right one and training on how to use them to maintain a healthy musculoskeletal system.

Percussive Therapy

Massage guns utilize percussive therapy or vibration therapy, sometimes simultaneously. Percussion and vibration therapy are slightly different. They are soft tissue manipulation, which reduces muscle soreness and post-physical activity, and workout fatigue.

  • Vibration therapy uses vibration movements to relax the body, alleviate stress and improve circulation.
  • Vibration therapy applies force to targeted areas but with less intensity.
  • This type of soft tissue therapy is generally defined as reaching eight to 10 millimeters into the soft tissues.
  • Vibration therapy is often recommended for individuals with chronic pain conditions, overly sensitive muscles, or a medical condition that prevents them from using percussive therapy.
  • Percussive therapy involves the application of force to muscles and fascia to break up adhesions and increase circulation to sore and sensitive areas.
  • Percussive therapy extends deeper into the muscles and reaches deep into soft tissue, estimated to be about 60% deeper.

Using It Properly

It’s important to know how to use the machine to get the most out of a percussive massager. Using the massager incorrectly can lead to further injury or the development of new injuries.

Before Workouts

A pre-workout massage session can help warm up the body by increasing circulation and improving the range of motion of the muscles that will be engaged during the workout. Spend one to two minutes massaging each muscle group that will be worked out, plus 30 seconds on supporting muscle groups. For example, here is a pre-workout massage for a leg workout.

  • Sixty seconds on each quadricep.
  • Sixty seconds on each hamstring.
  • Thirty seconds on the lower back.
  • Thirty seconds on each calf.

Circulation increases in less than five minutes, and the muscles are ready for exercise. However, this does not replace proper warming-up like dynamic stretching and light cardio to increase heart rate.

After Workouts

After working out, a percussive massage can be part of the cool-down.

  • Post-workout percussive therapy can help return the body from a heightened state to a resting state.
  • Percussive therapy helps reduce inflammation, which helps reduce post-workout muscle soreness is thought to occur due to microscopic tears in muscle fibers and inflammation in the tissues.
  • Percussive therapy maintains increased circulation after a workout, providing oxygen and nutrients to tired muscles.
  • The massage helps relax the nervous system by reducing soreness and pain signals, similar to a TENS unit.

Sore Muscles

The muscles may still be sore a day or two after working out. This is called delayed-onset muscle soreness/DOMS.

  • A percussive massage can help but may not completely alleviate DOMS but it will provide temporary relief.
  • The massager’s speed and depth settings should be adjusted to where they don’t cause pain.
  • Sore muscles tend to remain sensitive, and it is recommended to use the lower settings.
  • Once a setting feels good, use the massager for one to two minutes on each sore area.

How Not to Use

Individuals are recommended to consult a doctor if not sure of percussive massage therapy and should avoid using a percussive massager on:

  • Musculoskeletal injuries – sprains and strains.
  • Bony areas.
  • Areas of severe or unexplained pain.
  • Sensitive areas.
  • Bruises or open wounds.
  • Individuals with arthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, or other musculoskeletal conditions.

Percussive massage devices are safe to use for muscle soreness and as a tool to improve fitness.

Individuals can safely use a percussive massager every day as long as they use proper techniques and don’t exceed the recommended usage time, usually provided with instructions on how long to use the device during a session. And some massagers have an automatic shut-off so the individual doesn’t exceed the recommended time.

Gestational Hypertension

Gestational hypertension develops during pregnancy. It is not preventable and returns to normal levels postpartum. However, there is an increased risk of developing chronic hypertension later if gestational hypertension begins to develop. According to Mayo Clinic, gestational hypertension is diagnosed by the following:

  • At least 20 weeks gestation.
  • Blood pressure is higher than 140/90 on at least two occasions.
  • Must be more than four hours apart.
  • There is no other organ damage present.

Visiting family and friends, traveling, spending hours shopping, wrapping gifts, setting up lights, trees, planning meals can make the body feel achy, tight, tired, and sore. Aches and Pains

Shopping at stores, malls can cause the body to experience adverse physical effects. Spending hours walking and standing can trigger neck, shoulder, back, leg, and foot pain. Spending hours hunched over a computer, laptop, tablet, or phone while online shopping can also cause neck, back, and shoulder pain. Soreness and pain can result from the spine and the rest of the body becoming misaligned.

White Coat effect

  • This is when an individual is taking medication for high blood pressure and shows a high blood pressure reading in a medical office that indicates their medication is not working.

Masked Hypertension

  • This is when an individual has normal blood pressure in a medical office but high blood pressure elsewhere.

The thoracic upper back or middle back is designed for stability to anchor the rib cage and protect the organs within the chest. Compared to the neck and lower back, the upper back is highly resistant to injury and pain. When thoracic upper back pain does present, it is usually brought on from long-term poor posture or an injury that overwhelms the sturdiness. It is less common than lower back and neck pain, but it does affect around 20% of the population and primarily women. It can occur for a variety of reasons, and chiropractic treatment can bring long-term relief.

The thoracic upper back is crucial for various functions related to:

  • Neural tissue health
  • Organ protection

  • Breathing mechanics

The delicate balance and function can create potential issues and imbalances, causing soreness, strain, and pain. Underlying causes for thoracic upper back pain include:

  • Direct impact on the area.
  • Injury from a fall, sports, or automobile accident.
  • Unhealthy posturing/positions that place added strain on the spine, causing misalignment.

Sitting For Prolonged Periods

Weakened Muscles

Metabolism is linked with body composition, meaning that increased muscle increases metabolism helping to burn more calories.

  • When sitting, the gluteal muscles, abdominal muscles, and legs become inactive.
  • Sitting for extended periods day after day can cause these muscles to degenerate.
  • Consistent muscle loss from the lower body can hurt the body’s functional strength and, with age, increase the risk of injury.
  • Any muscle loss, especially from the lower body, and is the largest muscle group, can lead to consistent fat gain.

Circulation Slows Down

Sitting for too long also slows down blood flow to the brain and the legs, causing them to become sluggish.

  • Sitting without standing can increase the risk of developing blood clots.
  • Blood clots can break off and cause blockages throughout the body.
  • One study showed a significant reduction in the vascular flow after sitting for just three hours.
  • But individuals who took breaks and got up to walk around for two minutes every hour showed improved circulation.

Tight/Sore Hamstrings Benefit With Chiropractic Manipulation

Tight and sore hamstrings commonly occur during workout and exercise, but can just as easily result from a fall or other accident. Individuals usually experience pain located at the back of the thigh with associated weakness along with the feeling of the muscles becoming tighter and a consistent soreness. Consistent tightness in the back of the legs is not only uncomfortable but can also make movement difficult.

Many individuals stretch every day, do yoga, etc trying to relieve hamstring tension, with short-term relief only to have the tightness return. This is frustrating but more importantly, indicates that the problem might not have to do with the muscle�s length. There could be an underlying issue that needs to be identified and addressed. A chiropractic approach will diagnose and treat the root of the pain, not just the symptoms.

Hamstring/s Tightness

The hamstring is not a single string. It is a set of three muscles that run along the back of the thigh. The muscles allow for the bending of the leg at the knee. With a hamstring strain, one or more of these muscles can become overloaded and can start to tear. Strains often happen during activities that involve running, jumping, and/or sudden stopping and starting. This is where stretching doesn’t help, however, a chiropractic adjustment can help.  
 

Weak Muscle Compensation

One possible cause for the tightness has to do with various related muscles and not the hamstrings themselves. Muscles that typically stabilize and facilitate movement could be too weak or are not functioning properly. What usually happens is that the muscles that are active have to work harder to compensate for the others that are not working/functioning properly. The tension in the hamstrings can be alleviated through chiropractic exercises/stretches that activate the stabilizing muscles and get the circulation moving to promote strength and take the pressure off the hamstrings. These muscle weaknesses can be caused by spinal misalignments that pull the body in an awkward fashion, throwing the body’s balance off. Each condition feeds the other as the hamstrings have to work harder, the body leans to the side that doesn’t cause pain, causing the spine to shift out of alignment and so begins the awkward body shifting to avoid the pain cycle. A chiropractic adjustment will restore balance and stability to the entire body.

A Pelvic Tilt

Pelvic tilt could be a contributing factor for tightness and soreness. This comes from:
  • Poor posture
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Weight gain
These factors can cause the pelvis to shift forward ever so slightly. But just that slight tilting could be pulling on the hamstrings. In order to rectify the tilt, exercise is recommended, and chiropractic manipulation to realign any spinal shifting.  
 

Sciatic Irritation

Another issue is sciatic nerve irritation that could mimic tightness in the muscles. The sciatic nerve runs down the back of the leg and the irritation could make the hamstring appear to be tight. This is where stretching the hamstrings can worsen the condition by irritating the sciatic nerve, causing inflammation. The sciatic nerve could also be experiencing irritation from spinal misalignment. A vertebral disc could be bulging or herniated. This could inflame the nerve root. A bone spur or inflamed joint could be impinging/compressing on the nerve root exits. A chiropractic treatment plan will relieve the tension being placed on the nerve and allow for proper blood circulation and transmission of signals without interruptions.
