Sacroiliac Joint Stretches and Exercises for Pain Relief

Sacroiliac Joint Stretches and Exercises for Pain Relief

A doctor, chiropractor, or physical therapist could recommend therapeutic stretches along with exercises as part of a sacroiliitis or sacroiliac joint pain treatment plan. Sacroiliitis refers to inflammation in one or both of the sacroiliac joints. This could be caused by:
  • Pregnancy
  • Injury
  • Infection
  • Arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
Sacroiliac joint pain is a symptom related to sacroiliac joint dysfunction. The symptoms of sacroiliitis and sacroiliac joint pain can be felt in the lower back, buttocks, hips, and legs. These symptoms can be similar to sciatica and can mimic other lower back disorders.

Some of the stretches and exercises included are common for treatment plans for various low back conditions/problems. Talk with a chiropractor or doctor to get their recommendation prior to starting any exercise or stretching program.

Stretches

Piriformis stretch

The piriformis muscle extends over the hip and can aggravate the sacroiliac joint when it becomes tight. To help stretch the muscle:
  • Lie on back with knees bent
  • Feet flat on the floor
  • Slowly raise the right leg
  • Bring the right knee toward chest
  • Gently pull the leg in until there is a comfortable stretch in the buttock
  • Exhale during the stretch movement
  • Hold the stretch for 30 seconds
  • Lower leg
  • Repeat on the left leg
  • Repeat each side 3 times daily, as needed
The stretch helps the muscle fibers to lengthen/elongate and relax.

Trunk rotation

Trunk rotation increases flexibility in the low back and hips. This can help relieve pressure on the sacroiliac joints. To do this stretch:
  • Lie on back with knees bent
  • Feet flat on the floor
  • With knees together
  • Slowly rotate to one side
  • Feet, hips, and back should stay on the floor
  • Hold 3-5 seconds
  • Move knees to the opposite side
  • Repeat 5-10 times on each side

Bridge

This is a stretch that strengthens the muscles in the lower back, buttocks, and hips.
  • Lie on back with arms at side
  • Knees should be bent, and feet flat on the floor
  • Slowly raise hips while squeezing buttocks and hamstrings
  • Hold raised position for 5 seconds
  • Repeat 10 times

Water Therapy and Yoga Exercises

Aquatics and yoga are a gentle and natural form of exercise that is recommended for staying active. Talk to a doctor before starting any exercise program. Aquatic therapy, known now as hydrotherapy/water therapy, is one of the gentlest forms of exercise and is highly effective. Exercising in water creates an almost weightless environment without gravity. Hydrotherapy uses the resistance from the water to improve strength and flexibility without straining the muscles. Regular exercise can cause pain by placing added pressure on the sacroiliac joints. Water therapy conditions the spine and hip muscles without generating muscle stress. Another option for individuals with back pain is yoga. The following poses are recommended and beneficial for the sacroiliac joints:

Childs pose

This pose stretches the hips and thighs and is a great yoga pose for beginners.
11860 Vista Del Sol Ste. 128 Sacroiliac Joint Stretches and Exercises for Pain Relief

Cobra

Cobra pose can help strengthen and stabilize the sacroiliac joints.
  • Lie flat on the stomach
  • Hands beneath the shoulders
  • Slowly push up as far as the arms extend
  • Bring upper body off the ground
  • Keep the pelvis and legs on the floor
  • When extended, be sure low back and buttocks are relaxed
  • Hold for 15 to 30 seconds
  • Gently lower to the floor

Triangle pose

Triangle pose helps to strengthen the sacroiliac joints and makes them less susceptible to pain. However, this pose involves twisting, so make sure to do this pose only when the joints are stable and pain-free.

Before stretching and exercise

Before starting any stretching or exercise program, check with a doctor or chiropractor, if the joints are able then the stretching/exercise could begin right away. However, in most cases, a doctor will refer the patient to a physical therapist or chiropractor to create a customized exercise and stretching plan. The therapist will show exactly what activities will strengthen the joints and how to do them properly and safely. These movements can help condition the spinal and abdominal muscles. This can help prevent future episodes of back pain. If an individual just had surgery for sacroiliac joint pain, the surgeon more than likely prescribed a customized rehabilitation stretching/exercise program. Follow instructions, and get the surgeons approval before engaging in anything outside of the plan.

Staying fit safely

When dealing with sacroiliac joint dysfunction or sacroiliitis, physical activity may need to be redefined after treatment. As regular exercise could mean strenuous activity and could do more damage. Exercises like heavy weightlifting, contact sports, and intense biking could place excessive pressure on the joints. A doctor or chiropractor will offer the best stretching and exercises for every individual. Physical activity combined with gentle stretching and conditioning exercises can effectively reduce low back and hip pain. Talk to a doctor, chiropractor, or physical therapist about incorporating healthy exercise into a daily regimen. For some, the workout might not feel like there’s anything going on, but the effects on the pain will be.

Facet Joint Syndrome and Chiropractic Relief El Paso, Texas

Facet joint syndrome also called facet joint sprain is a common cause of back pain. The joint/s in our bodies connect two or more bones and their primary function is to promote motion. In the spine, the joints connecting each vertebra are known as facet joints. Like any other joint, each facet joints job is to generate healthy movement and provide stability for each motion segment.

The disc/s function as spacers that support motion between the vertebral bodies. This creates a tri-relationship between the intervertebral disc and the facet joints. Degeneration or damage/injury to one affects the other. The effects of aging and/or traumatic injury can damage the facet joints and is the leading cause of back pain known as facet joint syndrome.

There are a variety of treatments that are used, but the most mainstream involves pain medication which can have undesirable side effects and can lead to addiction. Chiropractic is a proven, reliable treatment for pain relief and discomfort of facet joint syndrome. It restores mobility and flexibility while providing pain relief. Individuals notice significant alleviation from the pain and inflammation with chiropractic and is often recommended to those with the condition.

Facet joint syndrome

The joints are located at the back of the spine. At each level, there are two joints, one on each side of the spine. The facet joints are enclosed in a capsule. The capsule contains synovial fluid and the surface is covered with hyaline cartilage. These joints are constructed in this fashion because of their role in the body. This role is to control excessive or extensive movement, which includes hyperextension and rotation. This helps to stabilize the spine.

Facet joint syndrome happens when there is an injury or damage to the joints. There are a variety of causes, but basically, it is a sprain that is brought on by excessive movement. This damages the joint capsule and results in inflammation, swelling, and pain.

The pain triggers a protective mechanism in the spine called a reactive muscle spasm which causes difficulty moving comfortably and severe, sudden pain. It is difficult to sit and rest because of its integral function of supporting the body. Severe sprains can take weeks to heal, normally 2 to 6 weeks. Thedaily pain and lack of mobility make everyday activities difficult and a normal lifestyle almost impossible.

Chiropractic/Physical Therapy

Chiropractic is a proven, effective treatment for facet syndrome. A chiropractor will conduct a physical exam, discuss medical history, and send you for diagnostic tests like x-rays and MRIs. Once they have a clear picture of the condition and a facet joint syndrome diagnosis has been confirmed, they will discuss a recommended course of treatment that can include:

Exercise

They recommend exercisesspecificto the condition that helps relieve the pain while strengthening the muscles in the back.

Poor Posture

Posture is extremely important for spinal health and general wellness.

A chiropractor will help you achieve a proper, healthy posture along with exercises to do at home to maintain posture and retrain your body.

Heat/Ice

Heat wraps, hot showers or ice packs and cold pads can be recommended to help control pain and swelling.

Changes

Depending on job type, you may be advised to take frequent breaks if you sit all day or shorten your commute. Certain activities wont be do-able for some time until your back heals.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction Back Pain and Chiropractic El Paso, TX.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction Back Pain and Chiropractic El Paso, TX.

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction and its symptoms can also be a cause for low back pain conditions and disorders.

This condition is also known as:

  • Sacroiliitis
  • SI joint inflammation
  • SI joint syndrome
  • Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
  • SI joint strain

It can make regular activities like sitting, standing, walking, and sleeping frustrating, difficult and unbearable. It has been found in around 30-35% of individuals. Many individuals can spend months or even years dealing with symptoms but are never aware that it’s not the correct diagnosis. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction can sometimes be difficult to diagnose. These joints are so close to the hip and low back, that it is common for sacroiliac joint dysfunction to be mistaken for other causes/conditions of low back pain, like a herniated, slipped or bulging disc.

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction Symptoms

When low back pain is present, it can be quite difficult for a doctor to figure out the exact source/cause of your pain.

These are a few recognizable symptoms of sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

  • Low back pain is the most common.
  • Pain could also present in the hips, buttocks, thighs, and possibly the groin area.
  • The pain can be so severe that just touching the area is unbearable.

Other activities that can cause symptoms:

Common movements like climbing stairs, sitting down/getting up out of a seat, can cause pain. Pain can also be aggravated from standing or walking for extended periods but improve when relaxed or lying down. Stiffness or a burning sensation in the pelvis can also present.

Causes of Joint Dysfunction

A variety of conditions can cause sacroiliac joint dysfunction. The most common:

Arthritis

Joint pain can be caused by spinal osteoarthritis because as the cartilage around the sacroiliac joint wears down, the bones can start to rub against each other. Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory arthritis that affects the spine that can also cause joint dysfunction.

Pregnancy

Pregnant women can experience low back pain or pelvic pain from sacroiliac dysfunction because the joints get stretched and lose their elasticity during pregnancy. Hormone changes and added weight during pregnancy can place added stress on the sacroiliac joints.

Accident Trauma

High impact from an auto accident, slip and fall injury, or sports injury could damage the sacroiliac joint/s.

Viral Infection

Infections are extremely rare but could be another cause of joint pain.

There are a variety of treatment options that can help reduce and prevent low back pain.

Exercise/Physical Therapy

Exercise and physical therapy are therapies that doctors highly recommend before other treatments like pain medications or surgery. Exercise, chiropractic and physical therapy can help manage pain and other symptoms. Consult your doctor before starting any physical therapy or exercise program. Your doctor can recommend a chiropractor or therapist that can help get you started with the proper exercise treatment plan.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can help reduce stress on the joints, that are strained and tight. It also helps maintain joint flexibility. A physical therapist will perform passive and active treatment therapies to help manage joint pain.

  • Passive treatments – the physical therapist does the majority of the work. An example of passive treatment applying heat or ice along with massaging the area.
  • Active treatments – the patient participates in the treatment with at-home exercise routines is an example of active treatment.

A combination of passive and active treatment provides the best outcomes and offers the most benefits, as the patient has the know-how of proper posture, exercises that they can do and injury prevention. A chiropractor and physical therapist can build a physical therapy program to help address your symptoms.

Exercise

With sacroiliac joint dysfunction, you do not have to do hard intense exercise. The benefits come from a consistent gentle exercise routine with an emphasis on consistency. Exercising stretches and strengthens muscles of the low back muscles and helps maintain joint flexibility.

An overall exercise plan should incorporate the three main types:

  • Aerobic workout
  • Stretching
  • Strengthening

There are a variety of gentle exercises and stretches to help decrease pain. Adding exercise and physical therapy to the treatment plan can significantly help you manage and reduce pain symptoms.

Other terms associated with SI joint dysfunction are sacroiliitis or degenerative sacroiliitis.

Low back pain may be SI joint-related, so how to start the conversation with your doctor?

Things to Remember Before Appointment

Diagnosing sacroiliac joint-related pain begins before your first appointment with a doctor or chiropractor.

Three things to do before your appointment can help make the visit highly productive.

I. Know your medical history

  • If you have an existing spinal condition, it can definitely affect SI joint dysfunction
  • Any recent trauma, like an auto accident or fall?
  • Pregnant?

Think about these before, because they can help a doctor identify links or cause of Sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

II. Know the symptoms

Make it a point to know the symptoms so you can explain them in full detail.

  • Dull pain
  • Achy
  • Stiff

If you need to, write them down.

Common symptoms:

  • Low back pain

Pain that travels through:

  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Thighs
  • Groin
  • Pain when pressing on the Sacroiliac joints
  • Stiffness or electrical burning sensations in the pelvis

Know when the symptoms get worse and when they go away. For example:

The pain usually increases when:

  • Standing
  • Walking for extended periods
  • Climbing stairs
  • Getting/rising up from a seated position

And the pain usually goes away when lying down.

III. Write down questions for your doctor.

Think about what you want your doctor to understand and the pain you are going through.

Write down questions and take them with you.

This questions could be like:

  1. Is this pain caused by a sacroiliac joint problem?
  2. Why rule out sacroiliac joint dysfunction?
  3. How long does it take for the treatment/s to take effect?
  4. Is the treatment plan for long sustained relief or short-term relief?

The Appointment

Ask your doctor to examine you for sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

Low back pain research shows the sacroiliac joint, is a definite cause of low back pain.

This problem affects 30-34% of patients with low back pain.

A doctor can diagnose sacroiliac joint dysfunction based on medical history and a physical exam.

The physical exam, which can include performing specific maneuvers/movements to re-create the pain in a controlled manner, to help confirm a diagnosis.

Physical tests can initiate sacroiliac joint pain and help diagnose low back pain that is being caused by sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

If three out of five tests produce pain, then more than likely you have sacroiliac joint dysfunction.

Dialogue with your doctor/chiropractor

Its normal to feel overwhelmed during a doctor’s visit, especially if you have acondition that is hard-to-diagnose.

Talk with your doctor, their voice should not be the only one heard, this is your body and your health that’s at stake.

Your information is essential to help with an accurate diagnosis.

If your doctor doesn’t feel comfortable or feels they don’t have enough experience in diagnosing sacroiliac joint pain, then ask for a referral to a spine specialist/chiropractor that is comfortable and does have the experience in diagnosing sacroiliac joint pain.

There are a number of treatments for sacroiliac joint dysfunction, including pain medication, epidural steroid injection, and surgery. However, chiropractic care is non-invasive and does not have the unpleasant, sometimes harmful side effects of pain meds. It is safe and effective and treats the entire body instead of just the part that hurts.

How Chiropractic Care Keeps Spinal Joints Healthy El Paso, TX.

How Chiropractic Care Keeps Spinal Joints Healthy El Paso, TX.

Healthy joints have obvious benefits, including aiding in movement, keeping you flexible and allowing you to stay active. The health of some of your joints is readily apparentyou only have to bend your knees, ankles, elbows or wrists to see how they are functioning at any given moment. But there are some joints in your body that are even more important, although you may not be as aware of them. The joints in your spine, where each vertebra connects to another, are vital to the normal, healthy function of your body. Without healthy spinal joints, you can expect pain and loss of mobility, among other unpleasant symptoms.

Fortunately, keeping your spinal joints healthy is made much easier with regular chiropractic care. Periodic visits to your chiropractor will help you keep your spine operating as well as it possibly can, year in and year out!

Ways that Chiropractic Helps In Spinal Joint Health

11860 Vista Del Sol Ste. 128 How Chiropractic Care Keeps Spinal Joints Healthy El Paso, TX.

ILLUSTRATION OF A HEALTHY INTERVERTEBRAL DISC, THE DAMAGED INTERVERTEBRAL DISC, HERNIATION.

1. Circulation Increased.

Stiffness in the spine can be caused by a variety of issues, including trauma and degenerative disc disease. While chiropractic cannot prevent the wear and tear that life often brings, it can do a lot to heal that damage. One way that adjustments aid in healing is by increasing circulation to your spinal discs and surrounding tissues. Increased circulation brings in healthy nutrients and removes undesirable material, making it possible for your spine to heal more thoroughly than without good circulation.

2. Pain Is Reduced or Eliminated.

Back pain can make living a normal life difficult if not impossible. Depending on the frequency and severity of the pain, you may find yourself unable to do many of the things you once enjoyed. Even if you do not lose mobility, back pain can distract and upset you every time it shows up.

The pain in your back can most likely be alleviated through chiropractic care. By returning your spine to proper alignment, your chiropractor can ease pressure on the nerves in your back and encourage muscles and other soft tissue to release. Over time spinal adjustments can greatly reduce or even eliminate back pain, which will help you stay active and improve the health of your spinal joints.

3. Mobility Increased.

Pain in your spine and/or neck is usually accompanied by a loss of mobility. Your muscles may seize up in an effort to protect your spine, which can make it impossible to move normally. Even if you are not suffering from muscle spasms, consistent back and neck pain can make you hesitant to move in ways that will trigger pain. Over time, the lack of movement can cause the body to stiffen and weaken. The longer this goes on, the less likely you are to get the physical activity you need to keep your joints mobile and your body strong.

Chiropractic adjustments are capable of breaking up the stiffness that holds you back. By returning your spine to proper alignment, circulation is increased, pain is decreased, muscles release and mobility returns. It can take time to get back to the way you want to be, but it is time well spent.

Healthy Joint Health Requires Consistency

The best way to keep your spinal joints healthy over the long-term is to make regular visits to your chiropractor while also maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen. Everyone is different, which is why it is important to get customized treatment from your chiropractor. By establishing a relationship with your chiropractor, you can ensure that you are always on the right track for spinal joint health.

The Difference of Using *CHIROPRACTIC ORTHOTICS* | El Paso, Tx

Custom Orthotics are Worth The Cost

  • People who experience back, hip, and/or foot pain usually turn to orthotics for relief.
  • Foot Levelers is the leading custom orthotic provider in the U.S., but custom is not always cheap, as compared with the non-customized, over-the-counter orthotics.
  • Whats the difference and why spend money on custom orthotics?

Common Orthotics are Not The Same for Everyone

  • What works for one person may not work for you, which is evident by all the different insoles on the market for the same problems.
  • Take 10 people, all of who have different levels of activity, weight, age, types of pain and wear different shoes, go to the store for store-bought orthotics, take a quick assessment, and are all told to wear the same insole.
  • You need customized care, which is exactly what custom orthotics provide for your body.
  • Custom orthotics are created by scanning and assessing your arches, seeing how you distribute your body weight on your feet, and then a unique treatment plan is created especially for you.

The Body’s Foundation is our Feet

  • What if you were told that the foundation of your home was cracking and you had two options: put duct tape over the crack and hope for the best or spend a little more money and fix the problem the right way.
  • A scan of the feet is used to learn about each foot independently.
  • These scans highlight any differences between your feet like one being smaller, wider, or flatter than the other.
  • This information is essential to creating orthotics and helps achieve a result that over-the-counter orthotics simply cannot provide.
  • Although non-custom orthotics are less expensive, they are basically like putting duct tape on your foundation and may not resolve the issue\s and cause more problems and greater costs.

In the Long Run You Will Save Money

  • Custom orthotics are an investment that pays your body back a hundredfold.
  • Non-custom orthotics are cheaper and are made with unreliable and usually cheap material. These are not designed to resolve your condition, which forces you to spend more money.
  • Paying attention to the foundation of your body provides benefits to the rest of your body, and eliminates the cost of treating all types of discomfort.
  • The process of getting custom orthotics begins with a simple foot scan.
  • This provides us with important information to keep your body operating optimally.

Overpronation and over supination can cause a variety of injuries and conditions that affect not only the feet and ankles, but also the knees, hips, and back as well. Foot Dysfunctioncan very easily cause a domino effect that extends all the way to the back. The feet are the foundation of the body and when there is a problem with the way they function it can cause the entire body to shift out of alignment.

All our organs receive messages from our brain via our spinal cord. The lungs know to breathe in and out because of the messages they receive from the brain. The heart beats because of these messages as well. Every organ in our body is connected to the brain and blocking this connectioneven a littlecan cause serious health issues. Some health problems are easily felt like numbness in the fingers or a headache. Some troubles are not so apparent like digestive issues or kidney problems. Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and Chiropractic

Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and Chiropractic

Asking questions is the best way to learn, of course, and chiropractic patients often ask questions about some of the health issues they face. Some chiropractic patients are curious about back problems, for example, because chiropractors are well known for being extremely knowledgeable when it comes to spine health and the musculoskeletal system. A few chiropractic patients want to know about TMJ disorders.

Here are a few of the most common things chiropractic patients want to know about TMJ disorders.

The Most Frequently Asked Questions about TMJ Disorders

TMJ disorder?

A TMJ disorder affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is the joint where the jawbone connects to the head, just in front of the ear. The bones and muscles of the TMJ allow the jaw to move up and down, and side to side, enabling a person to talk, chew and yawn.

TMJ disorders (TMDs) can cause pain in the jaw joint and in the muscles that control the movement of the jaw.

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and Chiropractic El Paso, TX.

How common is it?

About 12 percent of the population experiences symptoms of TMJ at any given time, according to the TMJ Association.

The Causes?

There are several known causes of TMJ disorders, including:

  • Trauma to the jaw or temporomandibular joint
  • Infections
  • Dental procedures, especially those that require the mouth be open for a long time
  • Insertion of a breathing tube prior to surgery
  • Arthritis
  • Misalignments of the jaw

Grinding teeth, known as bruxism, may cause TMJ disorders but not everyone who grinds their teeth develops a TMD.

Medical professionals may not be able to determine the underlying cause of TMJ disorders in many cases but chiropractors can treat TMJ disorders even if the cause cannot be determined.

The Symptoms of TMJ disorder?

Many people with TMD describe their symptoms as a dull, aching pain that comes and goes in their jaw joint and in nearby areas. Some people with TMJ disorders do not experience pain but have trouble moving their jaws.

Other common symptoms of TMJ disorders include:

  • Pain or stiffness in the jaw muscles
  • Chronic headaches
  • Neck, shoulder pain
  • Clicking, popping or grating of the jaw joint when the individual opens or closes his or her mouth
  • Limited movement of the jaw
  • Locking of the jaw
  • Tinnitus, which includes ear pain, fullness, pressure, and ringing in the ears
  • Dizziness, vision problems
  • A bite that feels off when the person closes his or her mouth

Treatment for TMJ disorders?

The best way to treat TMJ disorders is to eat soft foods, ice the affected area with ice packs to ease pain and try to avoid extreme jaw movements, such as chewing gum or yawning.

Does Chiropractic treat TMJ disorders?

Yes, chiropractic safely and effective treats TMJ disorders. A chiropractor will perform a full evaluation of the patients temporomandibular joint and surrounding bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments to assess the full scope of the TMJ problem and determine its underlying causes. The chiropractor can then suggest a range of treatment that can include stretches and exercises that alleviate pain and melt stiffness in the jaw joint. The chiropractor can also detect and address any misalignments that may be contributing to TMJ pain.

For more information about the temporomandibular joint, TMJ disorders and chiropractic for TMJ problems, contact a chiropractor with experience in diagnosing and treating TMJ problems.

Custom Orthotics & Store Bought Insoles

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Temporomandibular Joint Disorders and Chiropractic El Paso, TX.

Store-bought orthotic insoles are cheap but the cost to you and your health can be very high. Understanding the differences between over the counter and custom made orthotics is important. Foot Levelers customized orthotics provide the highest-quality and most effective orthotic out there.

Foot Levelers custom orthotics are individually designed for your feet. This achieves a balanced foundation and a stabilized pelvis. These orthotics are handmade based on 3D scans or casts, and your doctors examination.

Over-the-counter insoles do cost less, but they only support one arch in the foot. When only one arch is supported, the structure can collapse, and that’s when problems can begin in other parts of the body. Over-support of one arch can cause pain and symptoms, instead of relieving them.

Orthotics Treat Way More Than Feet

Radiculopathy is associated with some of the most significant causes of chronic or acute low back pain. However, it is important to note that the condition itself does not cause pain. Instead, elements of radiculopathy, such as disc herniation, nerve root impingement, and facet arthropathy are actually what causes the pain.

Radiculopathy is a condition of the spine that occurs when a nerve is compressed, causing pain, weakness, tingling, or numbness along the nerves course. In the lower back, that course is in the leg. While it is most common in the lower back, radiculopathy can occur in the cervical or thoracic regions of the spine as well.

When seasons change, you may notice some pain in your joints. Fortunately, there is chiropractic care that can help. When people hear chiropractic care they usually think of spine problems and back pain. This is true, but chiropractic medicine treats many conditions other than spine pain.

Chiropractic can be used for joints all over the body, including ankles, knees, shoulders, hips, and wrists. It is a natural, whole-body approach to health care and wellness as a very effective way to manage chronic joint pain such as arthritis, or joint pain due to injury.

What Causes Joint Pain and Immobility?

There are several reasons that a joint may become painful and immobile. Injury or trauma to the joint, such as a fall, being hit while playing sports, or being involved in a car accident, can cause injury. Microtrauma occurs due to a repetitive use injury such as working on an assembly line or using a computer all day, can also cause damage resulting in pain.

Sometimes an inflammatory diet can cause problems and stress can also certainly be a factor. Stress affects the entire body, including its chemicals and hormones that can lead to joint damage or weakness, making you more prone to injury.

Finally, age may be a factor. As we get older, our bodies dont hold up like they once did. This can mean joint pain and decreased range of motion. The colder months can instigate pain in the major joints, including the knees, back, hips, and shoulders.

Why does Cold Weather Exacerbate Joint Pain?

The short answer to this is that researchers arent really sure. One of the most popular theories is that low-pressure systems typically accompany the cooler temps. The lower pressure can cause the tissues in already sensitive joints to expand, creating a perfect environment for inflammation including aches, tenderness, decreased range of motion, and swelling.

Other factors that may also affect joint pain in cooler weather are low-level dehydration, a sedentary lifestyle, and depression or the blues. Low-level dehydration is more common than you may think; most people do not have adequate water intake.

Sodas dont count as hydration and this can be a real problem. Generally, people dont hydrate as much when the weather is cool or not as much as they did during the warm summer months.

When the weather cools down people become less active, especially if there is snow and ice on the ground. Lack of exercise can lead to serious joint troubles.

Depression can also impact your entire body, including your joints. Many people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. Doctors believe that it occurs because of the shorter days and generally darker skies during the winter months. Depression and anxiety have strong ties to chronic pain as a whole, including joint pain.

How Chiropractic Helps Relieve Joint Pain

Chiropractic provides an all-natural, holistic approach to health care and pain management. It does not use medications or invasive medical procedures.

The chiropractor usually begins by aligning the spine, which is called an adjustment. This brings the body back into alignment so that it can function more efficiently and with less pain. The patient may also be given recommendations on lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, exercise, and supplements.

When the body is aligned, the entire system is balanced. This allows the body to work at a more optimal rate. As a result, the range of motion improves and the pain is decreased or even completely eliminated.
