Back Pain

Back Clinic Back Pain Chiropractic Treatment Team. At the El Paso Back Clinic, we take back pain very seriously.

After diagnosing the root cause of your discomfort/pain, we’ll do everything within our power to cure the area and relieve your symptoms.

Common causes of back pain:
There is an infinite number of forms of back pain, and a variety of injuries and diseases may cause discomfort in this area of the body. One of the most Frequent ones we see one of our patients in East Side El Paso and surrounding areas comprise:

Disc Herniation
Inside the backbone are flexible discs that cushion your bones and absorb shock. Whenever these discs are broken, they may compress a nerve leading to lower extremity numbness. StressWhen a muscle at the trunk is overexerted or hurt, causing stiffness and pain, this type of injury is generally classified as a back strain. This can be the consequence of attempting to lift an item that can result in excruciating pain and impairment and is too heavy. Diagnosing the underlying cause of your pain.

Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is characterized by the slow wearing down of protective cartilage. When the back is affected by this condition, it causes damage to the bones that results in chronic pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. SprainIf ligaments in your spine and back are stretched or torn, it’s called a spine sprain. Typically, this injury causes pain in the region. Spasms cause back muscles to overwork they may start to contract, and can even stay contracted– also called a muscle spasm. Muscle spasms can present with pain and stiffness until the strain resolves.

We want to accomplish the diagnosis straight away, integrating a background and exam along with state-of-the-art imaging, so we can provide you with the most efficient therapy choices. To begin, we will speak with you regarding your symptoms, which will provide us with critical information regarding your underlying condition. We’ll then perform a physical exam, during which we’ll check for posture issues, evaluate your spine and assess your backbone. If we guess injuries, like a disk or neurological injury, we’ll probably order imaging tests to obtain an analysis.

Regenerative remedies to your back pain. At the El Paso Back Clinic, you may be certain that you’re in the best possible hands with our Doctor of Chiropractic and Massage Therapist. Our purpose during your pain treatment isn’t only to relieve your symptoms — but also to avoid a recurrence and to treat your pain.

Reduce Stress and Back Pain during the Holidays El Paso, TX.

Reduce Stress and Back Pain during the Holidays El Paso, TX.

Here are some tips that you can use throughout the year but are especially useful during the holidays. So give yourself the gift of spending happy holidays with less stress, neck and back pain. Christmas is a time of excitement, growth, family, friends mixed with stress.

Now there is good stress that we all use when we need it, but when everything just starts to close in all around you, that’s the bad kind of stress that we want to prevent and avoid. For people with chronic back or neck pain, the strain of getting your to-do list done can take the joy of the season right out and replace it with pain and misery. Therefore plan ahead so you can get your holiday chores done without pain.

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 126 Reduce Stress and Back Pain during the Holidays El Paso, TX.

Five tips for making the holidays more enjoyable and comfortable

Tip 1 – Shop Simple

Back and leg pain, along with sciatica, can make walking at a shopping mall almost impossible. Instead of doing a lot of walking maybe pick up gift cards or go online. This way the family and friends get to pick whatever they want and you avoid lifting and carrying shopping bags. But, if you do buy personalized gifts, go online. Everything gets shipped straight to wherever you want.

Tip 2 – Plan Before Cooking

If you’re expecting a large crowd, prepare all you can ahead of time. Example: pies can be baked the day before.

Before you start cooking, look at the kitchen. Is there room for everyone to fit while helping, conversing, etc? If not, set up the space so people can flow easily around each other and get things done.

Use your counter-top to lean on every now and then for a few minutes and take the pressure off your back. Do not stay in any one position for an extended period. To help you not forget, set a timer to remind you to sit, rest, or stand. Also, let your guests help with serving and clean up so any stress on the body is reduced.

Tip 3 – Make Decorating a Group Activity

Dont decorate by yourself. Especially when moving heavy objects. Get help so everyone is involved. This will prevent repetitive injuries when reaching or twisting and reduce stress to you and your family’s backs.

Tip 4: Make Time for Yourself

During the holidays we can get tempted to forget about our regular eating and exercise routines.

Stay focused, as you need strength and flexibility to be able to accomplish these tasks. So stretch out and continue your exercise regimen no matter how hectic it gets.

Stretching will help keep you limber and reduce the risk of a sprain or strain.

If there is no time for your regular exercise routine, dont just drop it. Adapt and break up the exercises into little segments throughout the day.

Continue to eat the regular healthy meals you’re used to. Gaining weight will make back pain worse. Staying on track isnt easy during the holidays. Take a look online for healthy strategies before the holiday parties begin.

Here are some examples:

  • Eat breakfast to prevent overeating later in the day.
  • At the party, fill up with low-calorie foods like vegetables, leafy green salads, and lean proteins.
  • Try to stay out of easy reach of nuts, chips or candies, cookies, etc.
  • If you’re going to have some high-calorie food have some, but don’t overdo it.
  • And if youre going to indulge try something that doesn’t come around all the time, like a piece of your aunts pie, cookies, cake, ham, tamales, that you only get once a year.

Tip 5 – Look to the Future

Look ahead to the future and look up some simple ways to improve your back or neck pain. Setting some goals like adding a 5-minute walk break to your day that you could gradually increase to ten, fifteen minutes and so on. Signing up for a yoga/fitness class could be another idea. This could also be the year to replace your mattress. Whatever the case, take it all in, look at the options and figure out what works for you.

Muscle Spasms Cause Back Pain But Are Not Primary Cause El Paso, TX.

Muscle Spasms Cause Back Pain But Are Not Primary Cause El Paso, TX.

Back and low back pain can strike without warning.

It can come from bending over or lifting something and then you’re stuck, unable to move.

However, muscle spasm in the low back is a common occurrence.

Eight out of 10 adults will experience back spasm along with back pain during their lives.

11860 Vista Del Sol Ste. 128 Muscle Spasms Cause Back Pain But Are Not Primary Cause El Paso, TX.

The cause of back pain and spasm can come from:

  • Overuse
  • Accident
  • Sports injury

But a lot of times the root cause of the muscle spasm can come from a tiny injury to one of the structures in or around the lumbar spine.

If there have been one or more episodes of muscle spasm, more than likely it’s going to happen again.

The muscles in the low back all work together with the abdominal muscles.

If they weren’t there, then extension and lateral movement of the spine would be impossible.

The back muscles provide stability and keep the spine erect and balanced.

The balance can be compromised when spasms present along with an injured lumbar joint or disc.

Muscle spasms

These muscle spasms are involuntary and are contractions that happen spontaneously.

When the spasms occur out of the blue, the triggers are preceded by a series of small strains to the spine which develops over time.

Once the injury is active the inflammation sets in.

Then thenerves become overly-sensitive which causes the muscle/s to contract and spasm.

Disc Disorders & Spasms

Degenerative disc disease or a herniated disc can cause episodes of low back pain.

A herniated or bulging disc can compress a spinal nerve root, which causes irritation and inflammation.

The body tries to control the affected area by tightening the surrounding muscles and that’s when the spasms happen.

Muscles can become too tight because of:

  • Lack of exercise
  • Too much exercise
  • Structural imbalances
  • Dehydration
  • Electrolyte loss
  • Combination of all above

Conversely, there can be muscle groups that have become too weak.

Imbalances present themselves and chronic force is transmitted to the spine in a bad way.

Even a single off movement can trigger an injury to a:

  • Spinal joint
  • Ligament
  • Disc

And this results in spasm and back pain.

Muscle spasm in the low back can be very painful and debilitating over a short period.

Treatment

When it starts:

  • For the first 48 to 72 hours apply ice for 20 minutes and then every two hours while on your back.
  • Always use an ice pack and never apply directly to the skin.
  • After 72 hours then apply moist heat, which can be done with a heating pad.

If this does not work, try soaking in the hot tub, with Epsom salt.

Heat increases blood flow to:

  • The affected area
  • Relaxes tight muscles
  • Relaxes irritated nerves

Also elevating the legs takes the pressure off the spine and can help relieve pain.

Over the counter medications like Aspirin or ibuprofen can help reduce inflammation and pain.

Discuss with physician or healthcare provider regarding dosing regimen most suitable.

There can also be a combination of therapies

  • Rest
  • Ice/heat
  • Medication
  • Chiropractic
  • Massage
  • Physical therapy
  • Foot Orthotics

A combination of treatments often generates better results than only one therapy.

Prevention

Once the spasm has passed, and the inflammation has subsided focus on prevention:

  • Stretch – Incorporate stretching exercises daily, muscles benefit from gentle stretching.
  • Pilates or yoga can work wonders and always stretch before physical exercise.
  • Get fit – no regular physical activity can lead to serious conditions and possibly chronic pain.
  • Exercise benefits all, even some light walking around the neighborhood is enough. Just get moving!
  • Playing a sport could be a way to keep active. Remember, in order for any exercise to work is that it is done regularly.
  • Strength training is important, just as its name implies strength training builds muscle and reduces muscle imbalances.

Its never too late to increase strength and flexibility.

Look at activities that you and your friends/family can enjoy and make doing them a regular thing.

Low Back Pain & Your Feet

The feet are the foundation of the body; they support its weight. If there is not enough support, various parts of the body, especially the spine become exposed to added stress, this can lead to:

  • Back, hip, knee and foot pain
  • Poor posture and abnormal foot movement
  • Sports performance compromised
  • Greater risk of injury

An abnormal walk leads to imbalances throughout the knees, ankles, and feet, and can eventually cause pain throughout the body, and yes you guessed it the back.

Alleviate Back Pain While Driving | El Paso, Tx.

Alleviate Back Pain While Driving | El Paso, Tx.

When you spend a lot of time behind the wheel, whether you are going on a long trip or your job requires you to drive around town all day, it can be a real pain in the back. Many car seats may be comfortable for short rides, but they are not built to support the back on the long hauls. However, there are some things that you can do to offset a non-back friendly seat design and alleviate, or even prevent, back pain while driving.

Create a Comfortable Space

Before you settle in behind the wheel, you want to make sure that you are comfortable. Keeping things like your wallet and cellphone in your pocket may be convenient when you are moving about, but can be an irritant when you are sitting on them mile after mile. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Any discomfort can put stress on your body so even if it is not necessarily pain related, it can exacerbate pain as your bodys sensitivity heightens in response to the pressure.

Adjust your seat so that you are comfortable, but sitting reasonably upright. If you recline, it could put stress on your neck and upper back, causing pain. Your seat should also be high enough so that you can place your feet flat on the floor at least for a while (you can do this while driving if you have cruise control). There should be a slight bend in your elbows as you reach for the steering wheel and you should not have to stretch to reach the pedals. Make sure that your mirrors are adjusted so that you dont have to bend or crane your neck to get good visibility.

Tips To Alleviate Back Pain While Driving | El Paso, Tx.

Put Together a Healthy Back Kit

Bring along some things to help keep your back comfortable and pain-free even if youve never experienced back pain while driving. There is always a first time. Some of the items you might want to bring along include:

  • A towel that you can roll up and place behind the small of your back
  • A lumbar support pillow
  • A cold or hot pack
  • Something for pain relief
  • A cushion for your car seat to absorb the vibration
  • Water (so you can stay hydrated)
  • Essential Oil like lavender or peppermint (put a few drops in a carrier oil and apply to the sore areas)

Take Breaks and Move a Little

Driving straight through without any breaks is never a good idea. It can make you more tired, stiff and sore and less alert on the road. Instead, take breaks to get out of the car, walk around, and stretch. When you move, you stimulate your circulation which brings oxygen and vital nutrients to your muscles. Youll feel better, be more alert, and will be less likely to experience back pain.

Stopping every hour or so will help considerably with alleviating back pain. It doesnt have to be a big production, walk around for a few minutes, stretch your neck, shoulders, and back, then get back on the road. In between stops you can move your ankles up and down or rotate them to increase circulation to the lower leg. You should also adjust your position or your seat about every 20 minutes. Even these slight movements can help keep the blood flowing which will prevent your muscles from getting stiff and sore.

Regular chiropractic care, as well as a consistent exercise routine, can help prevent back pain in many situations, including while driving. Your chiropractor can also recommend some back strengthening exercises and stretches that will help make your spine even healthier.

Low Back & Leg Pain: How Chiropractic Helps Radiculopathy

Low Back & Leg Pain: How Chiropractic Helps Radiculopathy

Low back pain affects millions of people each year and is the number one cause of disability worldwide. In the US, it is estimated that 31 million people experience pain in their lower back. It is prevalent and can be debilitating. As patients search for relief, they soon find that not all lumbar pain is created equal. There are many causes and treatments vary widely depending on the issue. Radiculopathy is a condition that can contribute to lower back pain, but chiropractic care can help patients better manage it.

What is Lumbar Radiculopathy?

Radiculopathy is associated with some of the most significant causes of chronic or acute low back pain. However, it is important to note that the condition itself does not cause the pain. Instead, elements of radiculopathy, such as disc herniation, nerve root impingement, and facet arthropathy are actually what causes the pain.

Radiculopathy is a condition of the spine that occurs when a nerve is compressed, causing pain, weakness, tingling, or numbness along the nerves course. In the lower back, that course is in the leg. While it is most common in the lower back, radiculopathy can occur in the cervical or thoracic regions of the spine as well.

Symptoms of Lumbar Radiculopathy

The symptoms of lumbar radiculopathy include pain, tingling, and numbness in the legs. Some patients experience extreme, painful sensitivity to light touch.

The nerves in the lumbar region of the spine supply sensations to the buttocks and legs as well as control muscles. So, when a nerve is compressed in the lumbar spine, those are the areas that are affected. The condition is often called a pinched nerve or sciatica because of the way that the pain radiates through the buttock and into the leg.

low back leg pain chiropractic care el paso, tx.

Causes of Radiculopathy

Irritation or compression of certain nerves are what causes radiculopathy, but it is worth looking at the causes of this irritation or compression to see the deeper cause of radiculopathy. These may include mechanical nerve compression due to:

  • Bone spur
  • Disc herniation from osteoarthritis
  • Thickening of surrounding ligaments
  • Infection
  • Tumor
  • Scoliosis

Degeneration or trauma can cause inflammation in the spinal nerves which can lead to pain.

Who is at Risk for Radiculopathy?

Certain people are more prone to radiculopathy based on the activities they engage in and their genetics. Patients who regularly participate in contact sports, heavy laboror any activity that puts a repetitive or excessive load on the back are more likely to have the condition. Patients who have a family history of spine disorders, including radiculopathy, are also more at risk of developing it.

Chiropractic for Lumbar Radiculopathy

A review published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine examined 162 patients with radiculopathy who were treated with chiropractic care. Of those patients, more than 85% not only experienced pain relief, but their conditions were resolved. This was done over 9 treatment sessions. Most of the patients saw animprovement of their symptoms within 4 days of their first treatment.

There are a number of treatments for lumbar radiculopathy, including pain medication, epidural steroid injection, and surgery. However, chiropractic care is non-invasive and does not have the unpleasant, sometimes harmful of many pain medications. It is safe and effective, treating the entire body instead of just the part that hurts.

When treating lumbar radiculopathy, the chiropractor may use several techniques such as spinal adjustments as well as stabilization exercise and neuromobilization. They will also work with the patient to determine if there are engaging in any activities that increase their risk factor for the condition. In some cases, the chiropractor may recommend certain lifestyle and dietary changes to increase whole body wellness and a stronger, healthier spine.
