Individuals that have undergone spine surgery or spinal fusion for extreme low back pain caused by degeneration, herniated disks, sciatica, and other injuries could benefit from gentle chiropractic therapy post-surgery. Spinal fusion surgery is one of the last options after non-invasive treatment/s aren’t providing relief like:
Massage
Physical therapy
Chiropractic
Medications
However, many patients still experience pain/discomfort after the surgery and wonder which rehabilitation treatment options are available to them. Is chiropractic care still an option after major spinal surgery? Doctors will warn patients about the risks of receiving chiropractic treatment after surgery. This is true with high-velocity low-amplitude spinal adjustments/manipulation.
But incorporating gentle chiropractic therapy could benefit individuals still experiencing back pain after surgery. However, an individual needs to be adequately healed prior to beginning treatment. At Injury Medical Chiropractic and Functional Wellness Clinic, we regularly consult with patients post-surgery about the effectiveness of spinal rehabilitation therapy.
After the surgery wait time
Spinal fusion surgeryremoves the discs between two or more vertebrae and fuses the bones together with screws and plates. The objective is to correct conditions like herniated discs and degenerative disc disease by immobilizing the spine in that area. It can take three months for the vertebrae to fuse together and create a complete immobilized graft. Once the graft is complete, physical therapy is brought in to strengthen the muscles around the graft. Patients are told to avoid any twisting and bending motions, or the graft could break.
How gentle chiropractic therapy can help
Spinal fusion surgery is not guaranteed to cure the problem causing an individual’s back pain. Gentle chiropractic therapy can help by therapeutically massaging the area/s keeping the muscles loose and flexible. Gentle manipulations are utilized to adjust or realign bones in the spine and other areas of the body. Because chiropractic treatment can involve intricate spinal manipulations, many individuals that have undergone back surgery can be hesitant to consider chiropractic treatment.
Discuss the possibility of receiving chiropractic therapy with a physician to determine whether the surgical graft is strong enough to withstand gentle spinal manipulations. A patient post-surgery is at greater risk of injury if they are not healed correctly before receiving chiropractic treatment. If the graft is adequately healed and a physician feels that the body is strong enough to endure mild spinal manipulations, reach out to a chiropractor to discuss treatment options.

Benefits of a cheat day
Cheat days can be a highly useful tool to help motivate sticking to a diet plan. Cheat days can help build a positive relationship with food. The goal is to see one’s favorite dessert/comfort food as a reward and not a coping mechanism. However, cheat days not a license to binge eat.
Binge eating can lead to eating-related issues and hurt an individual’s ability to self-regulate. Binge eating does not boost the body’s metabolism, but it can have the opposite effect. After a binge, the body’s system is overloaded with a rush of calories, sugar, and fat. In addition to causing hormone and energy levels to fluctuate, the excess of calories promotes:
Fat storage
Inflammation
Digestive discomfort
Bloating
Constipation
Cheat day frequency
Ultimately, cheat days depend on how well an individual self-regulates and what their short and long-term goals are. However, it can become very easy for a cheat day to become a cheat weekend, to a cheat week, and so on. Next thing an individual is back to old unhealthy eating habits. The objective is to understand what helps maintain motivation and develop a sustainable, long-term plan.

Chiropractors don’t only work on the spine. Doctors of chiropractic are trained to treat the entire musculoskeletal system. They could be called joint specialists. Chiropractic physical therapy can help with knee pain. They can help bring knee pain relief in several ways by treating the root cause/s. A chiropractor will perform:
Knee adjustments
Hip adjustments
Posture analysis
Gait analysis
Weight distribution analysis
There are also a number of chiropractic physical therapy modalities to help with pain, swelling, and arthritis. Knee pain causes can vary. A chiropractor can determine the underlying cause, relieve the pain, and help prevent future injury.

Chiropractic and The Body’s Musculoskeletal System
Many think that treating knee pain comes down to surgery or painkillers. Surgery can be the best option for some, but it is always best to exhaust conservative treatments, which chiropractic physical therapy is one of the most effective. Pain medication can be appropriate but with the addictive potential about they are best avoided unless absolutely necessary. Chiropractic offers an alternative to pain medications and even surgery for certain cases.

Causes For Common Knee Pain Issues
Here are some of the most common causes of knee pain along with the ways a chiropractor can help to relieve the pain and treat the underlying issue. Treatment plans vary depending on the specific circumstances/conditions.

Knee Bursitis
Bursitis is inflammation of the fluid-filled sac located in the joints between bones, tendons, and muscles. The sacs are called bursae and are essential in proper joint function. They help reduce friction during the course of regular joint movement/function. Knee bursitis is commonly caused by overuse and misalignment. It can be caused while:
Walking
Running
Kneeling
Stretching the knee
It can also cause swelling around the front of the kneecap

Chiropractic Treatment
The reduction of pain and swelling are the first steps of chiropractic physical therapy. This is achieved with:
Therapeutic massage
Ultrasound
Hot and cold therapy
Cold laser therapy
Once the pain and swelling are addressed then the cause of the inflamed bursa can be determined. This is done through adjustments of the knee, hips, or spine to help correct the issue and promote proper recovery and prevention.

Patellar Tendonitis
Tendonitis means there is damage or irritation to a tendon. Patellar tendonitis occurs in the tendon that connects the kneecap to the shin. This is common for individuals who run and jump regularly like athletes. Overweight individuals have an increased risk for patellar tendonitis because of the extra stress placed on the knees. This is often a result of repeated overuse and happens gradually. It can be the result of trauma to the knee as well. The pain happens just below the kneecap and increases with physical activity.

Chiropractic Treatment
Most often rest is the first option. Chiropractic physical therapy can recommend wearing a knee brace during the treatment. They will also teach the patient proper stretching and warm-up exercises to prevent tendonitis.
Osteoarthritis
Chiropractic is effective at reducing arthritis pain and inflammation throughout the body. Osteoarthritis can make everyday activities like walking and kneeling difficult or impossible. Chiropractic is designed to help reduce pain increase blood/nerve circulation that will promote healthy joint function and movement.

Chiropractic Treatment
Chiropractic will help osteoarthritis through:
Massage
Ultrasound
Laser therapy
All can help reduce pain and inflammation in the knees joints
Hands-on stretching
Adjustments can also help to improve the range of motion and joint function
This is important because knee pain can lead to increased pressure on the joints in the lower back, causing discomfort/pain as well.

Knee Valgus
Knee valgus also known as knock knee, is an inward tilt of the knees. It is easy to see when squatting or kneeling, but it can also happen when walking or standing. Young children tend to develop knee valgus but grow out of it by the time they are 10 years of age. However, if the knees remain bowed into the teenage years and beyond, it can cause issues in the hips, glutes, and back. Knee valgus can also be the result of:
Weak muscles in the legs, hips, or glutes
Tight muscles in the legs, hips, or glutes
Determining the exact cause is essential to address it and develop a treatment plan to correct the issue.

Chiropractic Treatment
Chiropractic specializes in the musculoskeletal system and a doctor of chiropractic knows what to look for. A chiropractor can address the issue through adjustments of the spine, hips, and knees. Hands-on clinic exercises and at-home exercises will be incorporated to correct the issues. These exercises combined with chiropractic will address structural and postural issues.
Other Knee Pain Causes
Chiropractic can also address and recommend treatments for other knee conditions. These include:
Chiropractic Adjustments for Pain Relief, Function, and Prevention
Problems with the hips and spine can contribute to knee pain, as well as issues with the foot, ankle, or pelvis. Chiropractors perform a thorough examination of all the joints, tendons, and muscles that could be contributing to the pain. They will look at a full medical history and other details like:
Overall health
Diet
Lifestyle habits
Job
Exercise and/or sports activities
Injuries
Posture
Walking gait
With this information, the chiropractor will develop a customized plan unique to the individual’s needs and situation. Waiting for the pain to go away is not the best option. Chiropractic is safe, non-invasive, and offers a thorough approach to treating knee pain.

Difficulty Moving
Lack of adequate muscle can cause difficulty moving like taking the elevator becoming a necessity, getting tired more easily, and getting in and out of a car can become a challenge. These are all possible experiences that can come as a result of losing muscle. Around 19% of women and 10% of men aged 65 years or older are unable to kneel. With no balance to kneel and pick something up means trouble. What to do to prevent massive muscle loss.

How Chiropractic Supports The Health Of The Spine
The main focus of chiropractic is on the health of the spine. This is because the spine’s health is the base for all other aspects of the body’s health. When the spine is properly aligned, nerve energy/communication and blood circulation are optimized to support the body’s function. When the body is in proper form the health benefits are numerous. These include:
Pain alleviation
Increased energy
Increased productivity
Clear thinking
Improved biomechanics movement
Improved mood
The chiropractic approach is science-based and is highly recommended for achieving positive health results.
Treatment Options
Chiropractic builds-up the body’s nervous system, immune system, and strengthens the musculoskeletal system. What to expect from treatment sessions depends on each individual’s specific conditions, needs, and goals. Treatment can include:
Spinal adjusting
Spinal adjustments combined with other treatment techniques are needed to maintain the body’s health long term.
Health Coaching
Understanding the causes of ill health/conditions will help manage and prevent issues. A chiropractor and a health coach can discuss positive lifestyle modification factors that will help like:

Best Diet for Weight Loss
Life is about balance and is important to remember that all macronutrients are needed to function properly. Protein does not just affect muscle, it also acts on hormones, enzymes, and antibodies. Carbs are an energy source that the red blood cells use, and without enough fat in the diet, an individual can gain weight by eating more filler foods. The body is a well-refined machine that does not function on fad diets.
The function is obtained through balance and variety in a healthy diet. The best diet for weight loss is not complicated or high-tech. The focus should be on whole unrefined foods, reduced red meat consumption, and plenty of vegetables. But, the food does not have to taste bad or have no taste at all. A too rigid diet can make individuals more likely to revert back into unhealthy eating habits. Try a salad with leafy greens, brown rice, sweet potatoes, avocado, black beans, and cilantro lime dressing. It may be a surprise, how healthy eating can taste amazing.

Consistency is what makes chiropractic care work. A common misunderstanding about chiropractic medicine is the number of follow-up treatments necessary after the initial adjustment. Every individual requires a unique customized treatment plan. There are a few general guidelines chiropractors use to determine how they schedule follow-ups. Here is some insight into the nature of corrective chiropractic adjustments.
Consistent Chiropractic
The critical nature of follow-up visits is that a single chiropractic adjustment is not an instant cure. It is an ongoing corrective process. Follow-up appointments are to ensure that the adjustments are on the right track and that whole-body wellness is maintained. Consistent chiropractic treatments maximize effectiveness and ensure proper functionality.
Types of Care
The need for consistent care can be placed in types or phases. Types of care are:
Urgent
Reparative
Preventive
Rehabilitative
Urgent
Individuals go to a medical clinic because they are experiencing discomforting symptoms, pain, etc. A chiropractor’s responsibility is to alleviate those symptoms and address the root cause. Until the symptoms stop and no longer present an individual is in the urgent phase. During this phase, because the injury/condition is new to the chiropractor, they need to get it stabilized first, which consists of several adjustments that focus on various areas. In order to bring proper balance, each of those areas is worked on at follow-up treatment sessions.
Reparative/Rehabilitative
Reparative care does not require the need to see the individual as often. Instead, the treatment is now focused on the root cause of the symptoms, and getting back range of motion. Regular appointments are still important, but they are not as frequent as initial treatment.
Preventive
The preventive care phase is when the main issues have been addressed and can now work on strengthening the immune system through regular adjustments along with stretches, exercises, and diet recommendations that will optimize overall health. This phase includes regularly scheduled but more infrequent adjustment appointments.
Chiropractic Supplementation
A properly maintained regimen of treatment is going beyond the physical manipulation of the spine. Chiropractic clinics offer many other benefits that include:
Consistent chiropractic treatment approaches require time, patience, and energy. All of these help to deliver superior care that leads to optimal health.

Chronic stress is a continued and constant feeling of stress that negatively affects the body’s health if left untreated. It is caused by everyday pressures from work, family, or trauma, but instead of calming down and going back to a neutral demeanor, the worry and anxiety keep going. Chronic stress happens when the body experiences stressors to an intense degree, that the nervous system is not able to activate the relaxation response regularly.
Normal stress is an essential part of the bodys fight or flight response that keeps an individual safe from danger and ensures survival when something threatening occurs. If the stress becomes chronic and is not managed appropriately it can be detrimental causing or exacerbating serious health problems that include:
Mental health problems
Depression
Anxiety
Disorders
Cardiovascular disease/s
Heart disease
High blood pressure
Abnormal heart rhythms
Heart attack
Stroke
This affects almost every system in the body, directly and indirectly. The body can handle acute/short-term stress, but not chronic stress. Despite how chronic stress can damage overall health, chiropractic can bring the body back into balance and help manage the stress.
Chronic Stress Health
There are a variety of factors that can lead to the onset of chronic stress and include:
Mental health problems related to depression, anxiety, etc
Traumatic events like natural disasters, automobile accident, injuries
Caring for a family member or elder that is sick
Continued exposure to negativity from social media, news, etc
Chronic blue light exposure from electronic devices
Unhealthy habits related to poor sleep, unhealthy diet, and lack of exercise
Chronic illness
Having no stress management techniques or unhealthy coping methods
The body is not meant to be in a constant state of stress, as it does not allow the body to repair itself and rest properly. This can lead to the breakdown of cellular processes, proper organ functions, and lead to disease. Chronic stress has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and depression.
Identification
It is not easy to recognize chronic stress. This is because of its long-lasting nature that individuals get so accustomed to, that it becomes normal. Symptoms to look for when identifying chronic stress:
Mood fluctuations and/or irritability
Always worrying about something
No time to take care of oneself or take part in enjoyable activities
Little inconveniences become too much to handle
Constantly getting colds or infections
Rely on unhealthy coping mechanisms like junk food, or alcohol to manage the stress
Management Techniques
The ability to properly manage chronic stress is crucial for achieving optimal health. Management can be simple and straightforward. Options for management include:
Chiropractic
Healthy diet
Sleep improvement
Regular physical activity
Relaxation techniques like massage and heat therapy
Time management skills improvement
Reduced screen exposure specifically at night
Less time on social media
Mindfulness practice like meditation
Spinal Alignment
The techniques listed address reducing the external cues that affect internal health brought on by the stress response. Addressing internal imbalances will help the body return to a state of homeostasis. A common underlying imbalance that contributes to chronic stress is spinal misalignment. This is a root cause that could be over-activating the stress response which limits the body’s ability to return to a relaxed state.
Chiropractic Management
Spinal misalignment/s hinders the nervous system’s ability to regulate the body’s stress response. This is due to improper nerve signaling and poor blood, and energy flow. Chiropractic is a research-oriented, science-based natural medical approach that specializes in addressing spinal issues. It gets the body’s natural healing ability to activate returning the body’s natural state of balance.

The number of individuals experiencing hip along with back pain is increasing and could benefit from chiropractic hip realignment. Chiropractic treatment is the recommended first-line option for hip pain and other issues related to misaligned hips. It is non-invasive and allows the body to heal naturally.
Shifted Hips
Hips that fall out of proper alignment have the potential to cause a variety of health issues in the body. The hips support a great deal of the bodys weight and facilitate substantial movement. The hips need to be properly balanced to allow for optimal mobility without compensation from the lower back and legs. A shift in the hips can occur from:
Shifted hips can cause pain in the low back, hips, and legs. This occurs from an altered gait and range of motion in this region. However, the hip joints, pelvic bones, muscles, and ligaments can all contribute to hip shifting and pain. Hip issues can also cause sciatica.
Hip Function
The hips do not receive as much attention until aches and pain start to present. Our hips are involved in nearly everything we do, providing numerous functions. It is no wonder they can cause tremendous pain when they’re out of alignment. The hips:
Keep the body upright
Bear the body’s weight
Allow for smooth:
Walking
Kicking
Running
Jumping
Sitting
Hip Adjustment
How to know if a hip adjustment is necessary? If there is any type of discomfort, soreness, and especially pain, achiropractor is the best medical professional to perform an examination and recommend if an adjustment is necessary or could just need ice/heat and rest.
However, if the source is being caused by another condition or injury the chiropractor will recommend the proper health care professional/specialist that can treat the issue. Hip pain can also be brought on from a different part of the body having its own issues. One of the most common types of hip pain is actually from a hernia or sciatica.
Chiropractic Hip Realignment
Chiropractic techniques focus on rebalancing the body, especially when realigning the hips. Manual manipulation and mobilization treatment techniques can improve flexibility, strength, and positioning to promote optimal balance and hip realignment.
A combination of adjustment techniques can be performed on the hip and spinal joints. Massage treatment can be incorporated into the treatment plan to loosen tight muscles, as the hips are realigned and are able to move freely. The holistic nature of chiropractic doesn’t just treat just the symptoms but identifies and treats the root cause. If the pain continues or worsens then the possibility for hip surgery could be recommended.
Complex Treatment
Working on imbalanced hips is not as straightforward as adjusting the low back. This is because there are a variety of arteries, nerves, joints, muscles, and other tissue structures that need to be considered during hip realignment. A chiropractor will use a careful combination of techniques when treating an imbalanced hip due to the complex nature of the area. In addition to chiropractic adjustments, chiropractors will suggest ways to improve hip mobility at home. This includes:
Stretches
Posture work
Exercises
These will help prevent the hips from shifting out of alignment. Treating pain at its source is what chiropractors do. Chiropractic hip realignment along with the realignment of the spine will allow the body to move freely, maintain balance and strength.

Here are a few questions that most new patients have along with the answers about chiropractic adjustments, how they work, what they do and what to expect when visiting a chiropractor.
How do adjustments work?
Chiropractic adjustments are painless, but there is soreness from the massage, the working out of trigger points, knots and from the realignment of the spine into its proper position. New chiropractic patients sometimes involuntarily stiffen or fight the adjustment and feel some discomfort. However, once they relax the treatment will go very smoothly.
If the patient has gone through recent trauma like a car accident or personal injury where whiplash or inflammation has set in then there will be some pain. This is completely normal. However, once the adjustment has been completed patients report feeling relief, calmness, a sense of well-being, and improved mobility.
During an adjustment what is that pop?
When the vertebrae are realigned, there are small pockets of gas that get released from the joints, which is what makes that pop. It is the same sound heard when knuckles are popped. This pop does not happen with all patients. But it does not mean that the adjustments are working/not working. It is not necessary to have a pop to mean that the treatment is working.
Professional Vietnamese chiropractor doing pushing motion to adjust the spine of a male patient
How safe are these adjustments?
There are several research studies documenting the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic is far safer than taking medication/s or surgery. Complications from chiropractic are very rare.
Question Is self-adjustment possible?
Absolutely not, chiropractic adjustments and treatment need to be performed by a qualified professional. Remember this is your spine when it’s out of place you don’t want to try to shove it back into place. A medical practitioner that knows the body’s anatomy, especially the spine is who you want working on your spine. This is exactly what chiropractors are specifically trained to do.
Can other professionals perform these adjustments?
Yes, there are osteopaths or doctors of osteopathic medicineDO’s that are trained to perform these techniques. But usually, they are chiropractors themselves or have chiropractic training but are not using that title in their practice. Chiropractors perform 97% of all adjustments in the country. Be mindful of pain therapists, massage therapists, or so-called healers that claim that they can perform spinal adjustments but do not have the credentials, qualifications, and experience.
What conditions do adjustments help with?
Chiropractic medicine involves precise restoring/realignment of the spine that will allow for correct function and proper movement. Chiropractic helps with:
Repetitive Movement Injuries like carpal tunnel, golfer/tennis elbow
Sciatica
Scoliosis
Sports injuries
Sprainedmuscles, joints, and ligaments
Stiffness in the neck, shoulders, back, arms, hands, chest, abdomen, hips, legs, feet
Strainedmuscles, joints, and ligaments
Tendonitis inflammation of soft tissues
Trauma to the body like whiplash from an accident, sports injury, personal injury
Work injuries, falls, slips, lifting, twisting
Question What if surgery is needed?
New guidelines have been issuedand emphasize that the first response for conditions and injuries should be conservative care. Because of the opioid crisis, non-invasive/surgical treatment has been deemed the approach to take with pain meds and surgery as a last resort. However, chiropractors are trained to recognize an injury that they are not able to work on and will refer a patient to the appropriate medical specialist when necessary.
