There are different types of massage, those that are for comfort and those for specific conditions or diseases. A few include:

Swedish Massage

  • Generally regarded as the most common form of massage, this technique involves a combination of five basic strokes and concentrates on the muscles and connective tissues.

Aromatherapy

Connective Tissue Massage

  • Connective tissue massage is similar to myofascial release in that it involves working with the fascia, or soft tissue, to relieve pain, tightness, and discomfort.
  • The theory of connective tissue massage is that tight, restricted body areas negatively affect other body areas.
  • Practitioners/therapists hook their fingers into the connective tissue and use pulling strokes to lengthen the tissues.
  • This releases tension, improves mobility and reduces stress.

Deep-Tissue Massage

  • Deep-tissue massage utilizes slow strokes, direct pressure, and/or friction across the grain of the muscles with the fingers, thumbs, and/or elbows.
  • Its purpose is to reach the fascia beneath the muscles going deep into the muscles and connective tissue to release aches and pains.
  • Therapists thoroughly understand the human body and have been trained to administer deep-tissue massage.
  • The technique is used in treating chronic pain, inflammation, and injury.

Geriatric Massage

  • Geriatric massage involves treating the elderly and addressing specific needs related to age, conditions, and illness.
  • The sessions are usually shorter and involve gentle techniques to facilitate pain relief, relaxation, and overall wellness.

Lymph Drainage Therapy

  • This technique involves the application of light, rhythmic strokes to alleviate various conditions related to the body’s lymph system.
  • The lymph system supports the immune system and is responsible for flushing toxins and draining fluid.
  • When lymph circulation slows down or stops, fluid can build up and cause physical problems like inflammation, edema, and neuropathies.
  • Therapists restore lymph flow by using a mapping system to assess problem areas, then apply gentle pressure using the fingers and hands to reactivate circulation.

Neuromuscular Therapy

  • Neuromuscular therapy is massage applied to specific muscles, often used to increase blood circulation, release muscle tension knots/trigger points, and/or release pain/pressure on nerves.
  • This therapy is also known as trigger-point therapy in that concentrated finger pressure is applied to specific points to alleviate muscular pain.

Neuropathy therapeutic massage is used in combination to enhance regular medical care. Let a doctor know when trying massage therapies, and follow any standard treatment plans. Some forms of massage can cause soreness the next day but should be combined with a sense of improvement and being healthier. Nerve Damage Symptoms

Nerve damage symptoms can happen to a single nerve or a group of nerves that can affect the rest of the body. Damage depends on the severity of the condition or injury.

  • Partially damaged nerves can heal on their own with minimal treatment to ensure they heal correctly. 
  • Nerves are made up of fibers called axons.
  • The fibers are covered with tissues that are a type of insulation.
  • Sometimes only the fibers get damaged.
  • Sometimes a nerve gets stuck or jammed inside a tight space, causing irritation and, over time, scarring.
  • Severe nerve damage can involve the fibers and tissues and often require surgery.

Symptoms can range from mild to severe and depend on which nerve fibers are damaged. These could be the following:

Motor nerves

The brain and the spinal cord have a casual relationship in the nervous system as they help transport neuron signals to the rest of the body. These neuron signals travel through the various nerve pathways that provide motor-sensory functions to the arms, legs, neck, and back that help keep the body upright and function properly. When natural causes or traumatic issues affect the spinal cord, it can cause pain symptoms associated with nerve compression that overlaps with different chronic problems. When there is spinal nerve compression in the back, it may potentially involve low back or neck pain. Today’s article looks at a condition known as Chiari malformation, its associated symptoms with the spine, and how decompression and chiropractic care manage Chiari malformation. What Is Chiari Malformation?

 

Have you been experiencing chronic headaches that are triggering neck stiffness? What about uncontrollable bladder issues? Are you feeling tingling sensations down your fingers and toes? Some of these symptoms are signs that you might risk developing Chiari malformation. Chiari malformation is uncommon when parts of the brain tissue extend into the spinal canal. This condition is a cluster of abnormalities that involves parts of the brain and cervical cord. The brain consists of 6 pieces that have different functions; they are:

  • Frontal lobe (Problem-solving, emotions, attention & concentration, etc.)
  • Parietal lobe (Sense of touch, visual perception, differentiation, etc.)
  • Temporal lobe (Memory, understanding languages)
  • Occipital lobe (Vision)
  • Cerebellum (Balance, motor activity, coordination)
  • The brain stem (spinal cord, breathing, sleep and wake cycles, etc.)

These different brain sections have a casual relationship with their correlated organs and muscles to keep the body moving. When there are deformities affecting the brain from Chiari malformation, studies reveal that the cerebellum is leaking out of the skull and pressing against the surrounding spinal canal, triggering symptoms along the spine.

 

The Symptoms Associated With Chiari Malformation & The Spine

The symptoms associated with Chiari malformation do affect the spine in the body. The symptoms vary from each individual, ranging from none to severe. The most common sign that is associated with Chiari malformation is a headache. Studies reveal that symptomatic cluster-like headaches are related to various diseases, including Chiari malformation. When dealing with a headache that radiates pain along the neck and shoulders, this is known as somato-visceral pain, where the affected muscle affects the organ, causing pain associated with a chronic issue. Let’s look at another symptom related to the presence of Chiari malformation. Scoliosis is when there is a sideways curvature in the thoracic or lumbar regions of the spine. So how is scoliosis associated with Chiari malformation? When skeletal maturity and age are affected by scoliosis, studies show that neural axis abnormalities correlate with curve progression, causing the risk of Chiari malformation to develop. Other symptoms that are associated with Chiari malformation include:

  • Muscle weakness (coordination issues, loss of balance)
  • Hearing problems (tinnitus)
  • Vision problems (double vision, light sensitivity)
  • Issues swallowing
  • Troubles sleeping (chronic fatigue, insomnia, sleep apnea)
  • Bowel issues

Even though it is not officially summer, the heat says otherwise. Individuals with neuropathy can experience flare-ups when out in the heat for extended periods. Avoiding discomfort and having fun with family and friends can be stressful. This could be graduations, park festivals, family gatherings, weddings, etc. Here are some neuropathy summer tips/recommendations to maintain a healthy, fun, and pain-free season.​

Neuropathy

Neuropathy results from damaged or destroyed nerve cells and is often a side effect associated with diabetes, autoimmune diseases, infections, tumors, and/or hereditary conditions. Also known as peripheral neuropathy, symptoms range from tingling sensations, burning pain, muscle spasms, difficulty moving the arms or legs, feelings of light headiness, and sometimes atrophy. The symptoms depend on the damaged nerves, ranging from autonomic, motor, and sensory nerves. As neuropathy progresses, individuals may begin to feel a loss of balance.

Research and Prepare

Preparation and planning are highly recommended to prevent a flare-up. For long outdoor ceremonies:

  • Wear sunscreen
  • Stay fully hydrated
  • Dress in cool clothes
  • Make sure footwear has proper arch/sole support and breathing room.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses
  • Stand periodically to ensure proper circulation if sitting for a while.
  • Shift weight back and forth during the event to pump circulation throughout the body.
  • Bring snacks like fruits, veggies, or gluten-free bars.
  • Know where cool resting areas are located.

If cooling down accommodations are not available, get there early to find a place in the shade, or in the case of bleachers, bring a more comfortable chair, umbrella, and misting fan.

​Listen to the body

  • Listen to the body when engaged in activities, don’t try to push through where you don’t feel comfortable.
  • Take breaks
  • The goal is to ensure comfort during the activity, as being uncomfortable can exacerbate symptoms. ​

Self-care

The body needs thorough rest after a long day in the sun. It is recommended to ice any areas where pain presents to decrease inflammation and neuroplasticity and help with any symptoms of itching, pressure, numbness, or pins and needles.

  • Start with icing for three minutes, take the ice off and see how it feels.
  • If the area feels better, continue icing for a full ten minutes.
  • Remove the ice if irritation occurs or do not feel a difference.

Foods

Watching what you eat can be difficult at summer events. Specific foods like bread, gluten, and high-sugar products can cause symptoms.

  • If it causes an upset stomach or swelling, it is recommended to avoid it.
  • Go with fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables.
  • A little planning can ensure you eat the food that’s best for you.
  • Call ahead to let friends/family know of any food sensitivities.
  • Gluten apps allow the ability to scan an item to see if it contains gluten.
  • Consult a nutritionist to set up an enjoyable diet.

Stages

The symptoms of neuropathy depend on the location and severity of the nerve damage. The stages include:

Numbness and Pain

  • Stage one consists of numbness and pain.
  • Some individuals describe a tingling or numbing sensation.
  • What feels like pinpricks in the hands and/or feet.
  • This stage can last for months, but most individuals recover within a year.

Constant Pain

  • Stage two is characterized by continuous pain.
  • Some individuals may experience shooting pains that come and go.
  • Intense burning sensations around the waistline.
  • Numbness on one side of the body with stabbing pain.
  • This stage can last for a year or more and worsen until the individual is incapacitated.

Nerve Degeneration

  • Stage three is when nerve degeneration sets in.
  • Loss of feeling on both sides of the body.
  • Loss of motor skills like walking and falling over.
  • Doctors treat the symptoms so they don’t get worse.

Loss Of Sensation

  • The final stage is the loss of sensation.
  • This occurs when the nerve endings are destroyed and can no longer send messages to the brain.

Treatments To Help Relieve Symptoms

Treatments usually involve:

  • Antidepressants.
  • Pain medications.
  • Anti-seizure medications.
  • Pain-relieving creams.

Body Composition


Common Cold

The common cold, also known as upper respiratory tract inflammation, is the most common infectious respiratory disease because of its effect on the nose and throat. The average adult will catch 2–3 colds a year, according to the CDC. A virus that causes a cold can enter the respiratory tract directly when inhaling droplets expelled from an infected person or by direct skin contact, like touching the face with a hand that came in contact with the virus. Cold symptoms vary but usually include:

  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Headaches
  • Body aches

The duration of a cold differs; however, most individuals with a healthy immune system recover in 7–10 days. However, individuals with a compromised immune system, asthma, or COPD have an increased risk of developing more serious illnesses like bronchitis or pneumonia. Hundreds of viruses can cause colds. Human Rhinoviruses are common culprits and are constantly mutating, which is why there is no cure. Several medications or natural treatments help alleviate cold symptoms; it is recommended to combat the illness effectively through a healthy immune system response. Doctors recommend proper rest, eating a nutrient-rich diet, and maintaining proper H2O hydration to boost the immune system.

Functional Neurology: Akkermansia Muciniphila for Metabolic Syndrome

According to scientists, our gut microbiome may be associated with health issues like metabolic syndrome, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Scientists demonstrated that Akkermansia muciniphila, a culture of bacteria naturally found in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract of healthy people, may be associated with weight loss in humans. While diet and lifestyle modifications are recommended to help regulate metabolic syndrome and its associated health issues, recent research studies determined that using “beneficial” gut bacteria, such as A. muciniphila, may regulate excess weight and obesity.

 

How A. Muciniphila Can Help Improve Metabolic Syndrome

A research study in the Louvain Drug Research Institute of the University of Louvain and the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc found that A. muciniphila supplements reduced the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and other health issues like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes in people with excess weight and obesity. Scientists are currently preparing larger-scale research studies to market A. muciniphila as a food supplement within the next few years.� Research studies demonstrated that A. muciniphila supplements are a safe and effective intervention for people with excess weight and obesity. �

 

Other research studies demonstrated the effects of Akkermansia muciniphila in overall health and wellness. In 2007, scientists demonstrated that A. muciniphila can improve the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes in a group of mice. Scientists also found that a pasteurized form of the beneficial gut bacteria improved risk factors, such as insulin resistance. Further research studies are required to determine if supplements of the pasteurized A. muciniphila have the same effects in humans. Scientists also need to evaluate the metabolic effects of A. muciniphila supplements in humans. �

 

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot research study included 40 participants with excess weight or obesity with insulin resistance. The participants were separated into three different groups which were given daily supplements of either placebo, live A. muciniphila, or pasteurized A. muciniphila, throughout three months. The participants were asked to follow their regular diets and lifestyles without changing what they ate and exercise or physical activity levels. The results of the research study concluded what other research studies had previously demonstrated in the groups of mice. �

 

According to the research studies, pasteurized A. muciniphila supplements helped improve essential metabolic parameters as well as helped reduce inflammatory markers in the participants. Pasteurized A. muciniphila also considerably helped improve approximately 30 percent of the participant’s insulin sensitivity index compared with the placebo group, however, the live A. muciniphila supplements helped improve insulin resistance score in the participants. The pasteurized A. muciniphila supplements were also associated with a small decrease in body weight and body fat mass in the participants. �

 

Recent research studies also found that A. muciniphila supplements can help reduce plasma cholesterol levels in mice as well as prevent the development of atherosclerosis in other animal models. Results from current research studies on humans demonstrated that pasteurized A. muciniphila considerably reduced approximately 8.68 percent total cholesterol levels compared with the placebo group while low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol decreased about 7.53 percent and triglycerides decreased about 15.71 percent, however, these results were not ultimately considered significant. �

 

Compared with the positive effects of A. muciniphila supplements on essential metabolic parameters, the participants in the placebo group had an increased risk of developing insulin resistance and hypercholesterolemia, among other health issues associated with metabolic syndrome as well as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Moreover, the research studies demonstrated that taking Akkermansia muciniphila supplements had no noticeable changes in the participant’s gut microbiome. The results show that pasteurized or live A muciniphila supplements did not affect the overall gut microbiome. �

 

Scientists currently understand that recent research studies did have several limitations, including that these were ultimately small-scale trials which mean that the results didn’t offer definitive conclusions associated with essential metabolic parameters in the participants. Scientists also determined that the results of the research studies didn’t find considerable changes in visceral adiposity and BMI in the participants. However, scientists concluded that the outcome measures did show the feasibility of administering A. muciniphila to humans with metabolic syndrome and its associated health issues. �
