'Low' Fat and Sugar Labels May Confuse Consumers

Food labels that say ‘low salt’ or ‘no fat’ may be misleading, suggests a new study.

These ‘low-content’ claims are based on comparisons with other foods and are not standard definitions. Making such a claim doesn’t necessarily mean the food is more nutritious than other brands, the authors say.

Consumers should “turn the package around and look at the entire nutritional profile as well as the ingredients list in order to get a better sense of whether the product overall is healthier or less healthy,” Lindsey Smith Taillie of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill told Reuters Health in a phone call.

Smith Taillie and colleagues analyzed data on more than 80 million food and beverage purchases made in the United States by 40,000 families from 2008 to 2012.

“We found that higher-income households tended to be more likely to buy products with these types of claims, which is consistent with previous research that suggests that claims tend to be more utilized by people with higher levels of education,” Smith Taillie said.

As reported in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, 13 percent of food and 35 percent of beverage purchases included products with some type of low-content claim. Low-fat purchases were the most common, followed by low-calorie, low-sugar, and low-sodium claims.

On average, packaged foods with low-nutrient claims had 32 percent fewer calories, 11 percent less sugar, and about half the fat and sodium compared to foods that didn’t carry any claims on the packaging.

However, some products with low-nutrient claims actually had more of that substance than foods without those claims.

Also, Smith Taillie said, when a product has a low-sugar claim, for example, it might have less sugar than a reference product or a similar product, “but it doesn’t mean that it has an overall better nutritional quality.”

Or, “it could be a high-sugar food but be low in fat, so it’s going to say low fat on the label. That doesn’t mean that it’s healthy,” she said.

“Essentially, it can be kind of misleading to make a decision about a product based on a front-of-package claim,” she added.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates what products can claim, Smith Taillie said.

“It’s not that the products are technically wrong in making a low-content claim, it’s just that the rules that allow them to make this kind of claim vary by the claim and by food category,” she said.

Food labels can be confusing, agreed Melissa Rifkin, a dietitian with Montefiore Medical Center in New York City who was not involved in the study.

Understanding what a nutrition fact label means is more important than focusing on marketing claims,” Rifkin told Reuters Health by email.

Key items to focus on are serving size, quantity per container, calories, fat, sodium and sugar, she said.

A new and revamped nutrition fact label is under development, Rifkin said.

“Slowly we will begin to see all labeling take on the new information,” she said.

Mallorie Cross registered a RBI and Kaitlin Ryder connected on a pair of hits, but Southern Miss behind, three solo home runs, downed UTEP 6-1 on a breezy Sunday afternoon at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex.

The Miners (8-21, 3-6 Conference USA) and Golden Eagles (16-15, 3-6 C-USA) are tied in the West Division after Samantha Robles (3-5) threw another complete game victory, allowing only four hits.

UTEP, who had been hitting the ball well as of late, struggled on this Sunday afternoon.

�We�re going to work on things offensively this week to get back on track,� fourth-year head coach Tobin Echo-Hawk said. �The first game, out bats were hot and then they kind of went away. We�ll pick the player�s brains to see where they�re at and where their mentality when they are up to bat so we can work on that this week in practice.�

The Miners will host I-10 rival NM State on March 28 in a doubleheader (5 p.m.). San Antonio is the next destination point for UTEP as it will play five contests. The first is a series at UTSA April 1-2 and two more games on April 3 against Incarnate Word.

Southern Miss took an early 2-0 lead in the first. Ciarra Cherry led the contest off with a walk, while Samantha Reynolds reached on a fielder�s choice sac-bunt. The defense went to throw out the lead runner Cherry, but was unsuccessful in the attempt. Cherry would reach third base on a throwing error in the process.

Lauren Holifield also reached on a fielder�s choice as the defense went after the lead runner Cherry at home, but she was called safe for the game�s first run.

Tori Dew then knocked in Reynolds on an RBI single up the middle. UTEP turned its third double play of the series on a liner hit to shortstop Cortney Smith, who made a diving snag to her right, while throwing out the runner at second. Samantha Papp flied out to center to end the top half.

In the bottom first with one out, Ryder connected on a towering shot that went down the left line, but the wind halted the momentum for a four-bagger, instead digging out a double as the ball dropped right at the fence. Smith walked with two outs to get a pair of runners on, but the Miners couldn�t sustain any more hits to get the runners across the dish.

In the third, Holifield hit the first of two solo home runs to put her squad up 3-0.

After a scoreless top fourth, the Miners got within two runs in the bottom half. Hope Moreno reached on a fielder�s choice and Lindsey Sokoloski singled up the middle to advance Moreno to second base. With two outs, Cross hit a blooper to shallow center that plated Moreno.

But Holifield hit her second solo shot in the fifth and pinch hitter Jade Lewis came up with the team�s third dinger of the game in the sixth to pull away.

Holifield finished the day 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Ryder finished 2-for-3 and is hitting .444 (12-27) the last nine games with 12 RBI and three walks. Cross, after her 1-for-3, one-RBI day, is hitting .316 with 10 RBI this season.

Erika Harrawood (3-8) started the contest, hurling 5.1 frames. Kaitlin Fifield threw 1.2 innings.

The Greater El Paso Football Showcase has released East and West rosters for the 25th Anniversary Showcase.  The game will be played on Dec. 17, 2016 in the Sun Bowl.

Players begin practice on Monday, Dec. 5.  The East team, led by veteran All Star coach Phil Hatch, will practice at Socorro ISD’s SAC while the West team, led by fourth year All Star coach Don Brooks, will practice at Canutillo High School.

Prior to the game, the players will participate in All Star Mentor Day, Saturday, Dec. 3 and Media Day, Saturday, Dec. 10.

All El Paso area senior football players are invited to participate in the All Star Combine, Friday, Dec. 16.  Seniors must register by Dec. 1 to participate.  For more information on the combine and game, visit gepfs.com or download our new mobile app available on iTunes or Google Play.

The showcase is also inviting all past game participants including players, band, cheerleaders, JROTC, dancers and choir to take part in the festivities this year.

The 92 seniors named to the teams will meet with the All Star coaches on Monday, Nov. 28 at YISD central office, 9600 Sims.  The meeting will begin at 6 pm in the Theater.

The Supers Organization has plans to expand Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) by starting its organization’s first all girls youth basketball team. The Supers currently has a co-ed team comprised of 10 and 11 year old kids and plans to retain coaches and players as the AAU program grows.

“As an organization we already offer American Youth Football, baseball and USATF track. By adding AAU basketball to our program, we want to increase the competitive learning experiences for our local youth as they go against national teams and talent,’ said  Supers Organization President, Isaac Clark.

To ensure as successful and sustainable program, the Supers have also brought on board Coach Orlando Hairston who has a proven track record on delivering winning results. Coach Hairston has been coaching for over 15 years and has produced multiple local and national basketball tournament champions.

“I’ve been blessed to coach some amazing talent and understand what it takes to get the best out of these players. The program we are building locally, will help develop our girls with the necessary experience and skills to compete nationally,” said Coach Orlando Hairston.

Tryouts for Supers all girls team ages 9 thru 11 will be held on Wednesday, December 7 starting at 6pm at Butler Gym, located at 14251 Ralph Seitsinger, El Paso, TX 79938.
