Alternative Treatment Favored by Troops

Alternative Treatment Favored by Troops

Rebecca Halstead began supporting the idea of utilizing alternative medical treatments, such as chiropractic care and nutritional supplements, after being diagnosed in the year 2005 with fibromyalgia, a condition distinguished by widespread musculoskeletal pain along with fatigue, sleep, memory, and mood issues.

However, throughout the time the retired Army brigadier general discovered her own solutions for the chronic symptoms of her condition, she was amazed by the recent studies indicating the troops use of alternative medical therapies at much higher rates than their civilian counterparts. Rebecca Halstead became curious about the way troops recognized the availability of these benefits. How do they find out about it and pay for it? It was not a high priority when I was in the military, she quoted, acknowledging complementary and alternative medicine, or CAM.

Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C.,C.C.S.T’s insight:

Complementary and Alternative Medicine, or CAM, has been favored by many active-duty members and veterans alike. A variety of treatment options are being used at a much higher rate by troops for stress management and for musculoskeletal injuries than the civilian counterparts. Chiropractic care has been frequently offered through the military health system for about a decade, encouraging its use for many troops. Important Facts of Sciatica Symptoms

Important Facts of Sciatica Symptoms

Sciatica can best be described as a group of symptoms from an injury or an underlying medical condition rather than a singular disorder. The term is used to specify symptoms of pain, tingling and numbness sensations, or weakness that often originates on the lower back and radiates through the sciatic nerve found in either leg.

When it comes to sciatica, the common injuries or underlying conditions causing the symptoms differ greatly based on age. Adults under the age of 60 frequently develop sciatica as a result of a lower back, or lumbar, herniated disc, degenerative disc disease, and isthmic spondylolisthesis. Adults over the age of 60 frequently develop sciatica as a result of degenerative changes, such as lumbar spinal stenosis and degenerative spondylolisthesis. Occasionally, pregnancy, or injuries such as muscle strains and bone fractures, which may create scar tissue, can also begin to develop sciatica symptoms.

Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C.,C.C.S.T’s insight:

Affecting millions among the American population, sciatica can be characterized within a range of minor irritation to a severe, disabling complication. Chiropractor Develops “Text Neck” App

Chiropractor Develops “Text Neck” App

A South Florida chiropractor continues to draw attention for his invention that helps people who constantly bury their heads in their cellphones.

Dean Fishman, a Weston resident who practices in Plantation, was featured in the Wall Street Journals Aches and Claims health column on May 24. The article noted that Fishman, who trademarkedthe term Text Neck in 2009, now has apatented phone app that warns users when they drop their head causingneck pain and headachesas well as early onset of arthritis, arm pain, gastrointestinal and breathing problems as they view their phone.

The app works without interruption of other functions on the phone by having a green face, which is located in the top corner of the device, meaning users are viewing their phones with good posture; a red face means that they need to make an adjustmentto anatomical neutral, which is defined as having the ears over the shoulders and the shoulders over the hips.

Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C.,C.C.S.T’s insight:

Text neck, is a modern condition characterized byneck pain and other symptoms as a result of constantly looking down at a smart phone, tablet, or other device. While prevention is a key element towards avoiding text neck from developing in the first place, it can be difficult to maintain a proper posture while using any of these devices. Fortunately though, a new app has been created to help individuals keep a good posture while using a device. Whiplash Injuries and the Use of Symptom Diaries

Whiplash Injuries and the Use of Symptom Diaries

A research conducted from the University of Alberta demonstrated thatconsistent recording of an individuals pain and discomfort in a journal may actually slow down their recovery from whiplash-associated disorders.

The research involved 60 individuals diagnosed with acute whiplash injuries. Each individual was randomly designated to one of two separate groups: a symptom diary group or a control group. The individuals from the symptom diary group were asked to manage a journal rating their overall levels of pain for each day. Additionally, individuals from both groups received physical therapy for their whiplash-type injuries. After three months of treatment, the individuals were evaluated for recovery.Overall, 59% of the individuals within the symptom diary group reported recovery as compared to 86% of the individuals within the control group.

The author of the study, Robert Ferrari, concluded that not only was using a pain diary unfavorable towards recovery but its use might actually be more harmful for the individual. Ferrari explained that keeping a pain diary could make an individual more aware of their symptoms, leading to incorrect perceptions of prognosis. Negative attitudes have before been linked to chronic pain symptoms in individuals with whiplash-type injuries and low back pain.

While diaries may serve a useful purpose to facilitate practitioner-patient communication about symptoms and to track the course of symptoms, the benefits have not been demonstrated, Ferrari wrote.

Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C.,C.C.S.T’s insight:

A majority of individuals who are diagnosed with whiplash-related injuries as a result of an automobile accident are often advised to manage a pain diary to supervise their symptoms but, a recent study indicated that keeping record of your own ailments may not prove as beneficial as experts believe. For more information, please feel free to ask Dr. Jimenez or contact us at (915) 850-0900.
