What Is A Winged Scapula & How Chiropractic Can Help El Paso, TX.

What Is A Winged Scapula & How Chiropractic Can Help El Paso, TX.

A winged scapula is a debilitating condition left untreated. The condition is often spotted by the protrusion or the sticking out of the scapula from the back. Fortunately, chiropractic treatment can fix the condition. This and associated therapies can help you get relief from your symptoms, and to strengthen your shoulders to avoid further discomfort.

Symptoms

The symptoms of a winged scapula can include:

  • Protrusion of the shoulder blade from the back
  • Pain when sitting from pressure on the scapula
  • Difficulty moving the shoulder and arm
  • Weakness in the shoulder and arm

Sometimes the symptoms of a winged scapula are relatively minor in the beginning. You may only have a little discomfort at the start. But symptoms tend to get worse over time, so it is important for you to seek treatment sooner rather than later.

Cause

There are a variety of causes of a winged scapula. Often it is the result of damage to the thoracic nerve in the shoulder, sometimes due to trauma.

The damage to the thoracic nerve can cause muscles in the shoulder to become paralyzed, leading to winged scapula symptoms. Many times the appearance of a winged scapula indicated other problems in the back and shoulder.

Poor posture can also lead to a winged scapula. Years of poor posture can weaken the muscles that hold the shoulder in place to the point where a winged scapula is more likely to occur.

Chiropractic Care Can Help

I.D. The Cause

Because this condition can be caused by several different issues, it is important to determine the exact cause before beginning treatment. A chiropractor is well-qualified to give you a full body examination to locate the source of your injury.

Realigning The Thoracic Nerve

Chiropractors are skilled at aligning the human body, including the thoracic nerve. We can locate the point where misalignment of the nerve has occurred and often correct it.

Strengthening The Shoulders

As a winged scapula is often the result of weakened shoulder muscles, the most effective treatment is usually to strengthen the muscles. Our team can guide you in rehab exercises to return your muscle strength and support your shoulder. We can also help you learn how to activate the right muscles in the right manner to operate your shoulder properly.

Adjustments

When things like poor posture and/or injury lead to a winged scapula, the injury is usually only part of the overall issues with the body. Chiropractic adjustments are ideal for realigning your spine and limiting the pressure on the nerves in your back. Adjustments can help with the muscle imbalances and spinal imbalances that often accompany the appearance of a winged scapula.

Seek Qualified Care from a Chiropractor

The symptoms of a winged scapula can come on slowly, which makes many sufferers feel like they should try fixing the issue themselves before seeking medical care. Unfortunately, trying to heal a winged scapula on your own is not likely to be effective.

In fact, you will need some sort of assistance to even apply ice to the area, You will also need help to identify exactly what is wrong and to treat it. Seeking qualified care is recommended.

Understanding Epigenetic Methylation

Understanding Epigenetic Methylation

Methylation in the Human Body

Methylation, commonly referred to as the “one-carbon metabolism”, is the transfer or formation of methyl (CH3) groups, such as MTHFR, COMT, and DNMT. Methylation frequently utilizes SAMe as a methyl donor. Methylation is fundamental for a variety of bodily structures and functions, including cell division, gene expression, early CNS development, immune cell differentiation, neurotransmitter biosynthesis and/or metabolism, histamine clearance, detoxification, hormone biotransformation, cellular energy metabolism, phospholipid synthesis, and the myelination of peripheral nerves, among other structures and functions. Methylation Explained Diagram | El Paso, TX Chiropractor Among one of it’s most essential functions on structures, DNA methylation highly regulates a variety of epigenetic marks, making them substantially stable, such as the covalent bonds of X and Y chromosomes in men and women. Methylation occurs at CpG sites with DNMT enzymes. Moreover, DNA methylation can help regulate and/or manage other bodily structures and functions. Histone methylation, RNA methylation, and mitochondrial DNA methylation (miDNMT) can help induce or inhibit gene expression. Recent research studies have also demonstrated that these same enzymes may additionally be involved in demethylation.

Methylation and Fetal Programming

According to research studies, while there are a variety of epigenetic marks which remain seemingly unchanged through inheritance, there are numerous other epigenetic marks which can change due to external factors, known as metastable epialleles. These changes can also change throughout inheritance as well as remain seemingly unchanged through inheritance. Metastable epialleles provide individuals with considerable differences and can be passed down to offspring during critical stages of fetal development. According to many more research studies, methylation can also affect epigenetic marks outside fetal programming windows.

DNA methylation was originally considered to be stable and irreversible, however, external factors can also affect epigenetic methylation. The purpose of the following article is to discuss the importance of methylation for a variety of bodily structures and functions. Furthermore, it’s fundamental to understand how nutrition, fitness, lifestyle, supplements, and medicines, can improve DNA methylation and overall health and wellness. – Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C., C.C.S.T. Additional Topic Discussion:Acute Back Pain

Back painis one of the most prevalent causes of disability and missed days at work worldwide. Back pain attributes to the second most common reason for doctor office visits, outnumbered only by upper-respiratory infections. Approximately 80 percent of the population will experience back pain at least once throughout their life. Your spine is a complex structure made up of bones, joints, ligaments, and muscles, among other soft tissues. Injuries and/or aggravated conditions, such asherniated discs, can eventually lead to symptoms of back pain. Sports injuries or automobile accident injuries are often the most frequent cause of back pain, however, sometimes the simplest of movements can have painful results. Fortunately, alternative treatment options, such as chiropractic care, can help ease back pain through the use of spinal adjustments and manual manipulations, ultimately improving pain relief.

Non-Invasive Treatment Guidlines for Chronic Lower Back Pain

Principles of Nutrition for Methylation Support

Principles of Nutrition for Methylation Support

To promote methylation support through diet and lifestyle changes, many healthcare professionals recommend following a diet food plan which is nutritionally replete and rich in nutrients for DNA methylation status and activity, anti-inflammatory, low in Glycemic index, rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients as enzyme modulators, optimal in hydration, and supportive of detoxification.

Moreover, to promote methylation support, a diet plan should avoid excess calories, folic acid-fortified foods, alcohol, minimize AGE formation, added sugars, foods from animals raised with the use of antibiotics and hormones, high-mercury content fish like tuna, king mackerel, swordfish, and shark as well as utilizing plastic food and beverage containers. According to a research study on diet and aging, calorie restriction can slow down or reverse the decline in age-related DNA methylation associated with diseases. As mentioned previously, alcohol consumption can tremendously affect DNA status and activity which may interfere with SAMe levels and may ultimately impact folate metabolism by inhibiting MTR and MAT enzymes, among other structures and functions.

Furthermore, many doctors and functional medicine practitioners also recommend following intermittent fasting, a diet plan which cycles between fasting and non-fasting, alongside a low carbohydrate diet. According to several research studies, an extended nighttime fast can stimulate a decreased ketone production which may help decrease inflammation and protect the epigenome.

Healthcare professionals can provide patients with nutrition advice and recommendations for lifestyle changes to help promote methylation support. While potential side effects of supplements have been discussed in previous articles, doctors and functional medicine practitioners can recommend supplementation alongside nutrition and lifestyle changes. Below, we will demonstrate a variety of superfoods, foods, and microbes which can be utilized to help promote DNA methylation status and activity.

Staying Hydrated And Healthy El Paso, Texas

Staying Hydrated And Healthy El Paso, Texas

Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there concerning hydration.

  1. How much do you need to drink?
  2. What should you drink?
  3. When should you drink?

It can be a bit much.

But staying hydrated is not that hard to do. A little knowledge and some helpful tips are all you need to ensure that your body always has the fluids it needs to stay healthy and fully functional.

What to Know About Hydration

The Importance

Your body is composed of around 60% water. Adequate hydration is necessary for your body to function properly. Water makes it possible for your body to maintain its temperature, to process waste products and for your joints to remain lubricated. When you do not consume enough water, your body becomes dehydrated, which can cause a host of different health problems if left unaddressed.

How much water do we need?

When asked how much water a person should drink, most people instinctively respond, Eight glasses a day. But the truth is that each person is different, and how much water you need may vary from how much someone else needs. You also re-hydrate from drinking other fluids besides water, something that you can take into account when calculating your fluid intake.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the average man needs 15.5 cups of fluid per day, while the average woman needs 11.5 cups of fluid a day. Note the term fluid. Water is ideal for hydration, but other fluids also contribute to your overall level of hydration. Of course, those other fluids may also contain sugars, sweeteners, caffeine and other extras that you should limit for better overall health. Limiting your fluid intake to mostly pure water is the best way to avoid potentially harmful extras.

Symptoms of dehydration

Dehydration can be dangerous, especially if left unaddressed. Mild dehydration can cause symptoms such as headaches, fatigue and a lessening of sweat and urine output. As dehydration gets worse, so do the symptoms. It can cause kidney failure, brain swelling, and seizures.

When you notice early signs of dehydration, there is a simple solution drink some water or other fluids. As long as you are not too dehydrated, fluid intake should be enough to reverse your symptoms.

If you’re thirsty drink water

Feeling thirsty is a sign your body gives you to consume more fluids, and you should listen to your body. You can avoid any risk of dehydration by regularly sipping water. But if you arent sipping water and you do get thirsty, dont worry too much. An initial feeling of thirst does not mean you are seriously dehydrated. It just means your body is ready for more fluids and is a natural indicator telling you to consume more water.

Stay Hydrated El Paso, Texas Injury Medical Chiropractic Wellness Clinic

Tips to Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is not difficult if you adopt a few healthy habits, including:

Use a reusable water bottle

A stainless steel or glass water bottle is perfect for carrying your own fresh water supply around with you. Plastic is also an option, but stainless steel and glass tend to impart less flavor to your water and will not leach any unwanted chemicals into it.

With your own water source, you can drink whenever you feel even a little thirsty guaranteeing that you will never become dehydrated.

Go with healthier fluids

Purified water is your best hydration source. Although you can drink other fluids, your body will thank you if most of its hydration needs are met through consuming water. Remember staying hydrated and stay healthy!

Diet and Lifestyle Changes for Methylation

Diet and Lifestyle Changes for Methylation

While taking supplements can help promote methylation support, many healthcare professionals have become aware of the potential risks these can have on their patient’s overall health and wellness. Diet and lifestyle changes are safe and effective ways to promote methylation support without the side effects of supplementation. Doctors and functional medicine practitioners utilize diet and lifestyle changes alongside methylation nutrient supplements to improve methylation support, especially for people who do not tolerate methyl donors. Diet and lifestyle changes can also be utilized as a stand-alone treatment or with other interventions.

Factors for Methylation | El Paso, TX Chiropractor

Nutrition and Lifestyle Modifications for Methylation

As demonstrated in the figure above, DNA methylation status and activity can be affected by a variety of factors, including genes, nutrient co-factors, nutrient substrates, dietary patterns, food-derived epigenetic modulators, drugs and/or medications, microbiome, toxins, stress/resilience, exercise, inflammation and/or oxidative stress as well as methyl donor depletion. Methylation support through diet and lifestyle changes have been demonstrated to improve DNA methylation status and activity. According to a 2014 systematic review and meta-analysis, food-sourced folate had a protective effect on breast cancer risk. Moreover, the research study also demonstrated that increased food folate intake is associated with decreased risk of sex-hormone receptor-negative breast cancer in premenopausal women. No known side effects have been determined from food folate and methylation nutrients, as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Furthermore, according to a 16-week placebo-controlled trial, an increase of 200 mcg/d in folate from folate-rich foods, folic acid supplements, and 5mTHF demonstrated no statistical significance between the groups in lowering homocysteine. Folic acid (FA) was more effective at raising plasma folates than 5mTHF, however, 5mTHF was more effective at raising RBC folates. Healthcare professionals should include food folate bioavailability for methylation support.

Several research studies have demonstrated potential risks for certain types of supplementation for methylation support, however, diet and lifestyle changes can help promote methylation support without experiencing the side effects of too many supplements. The purpose of the following article is to discuss how nutrition and lifestyle modifications can help promote methylation support. It’s fundamental to understand how nutrition, fitness, lifestyle, supplements, and medicines, can improve DNA methylation and well-being. – Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C., C.C.S.T. Insight

As described above, methylation support supplementation should be determined by a healthcare professional. Smoothies and juices are a fast and easy way to include all the necessary nutrients you need for methylation support without any side-effects.
