Miners Finish UCLA Invitational with Seven Personal Bests

Los Angeles – The UTEP track and field team had a strong performance with seven different athletes recording a new personal best on Saturday at the Jim Bush Collegiate Invitational.

Lucia Mokrasova clocked a personal-best 14.09 in the 100m hurdles to earn a fourth-place showing. Lilian Koech in her second race of the outdoor season competed in the 800m run claiming a second place showing with a personal best of 2:05.86 and the fifth-fastest time in school history. Linda Koech notch a personal-best of 4:26.47 in the 1,500m run.

Sophomore Tobi Amusan clocked the 10th fastest time in program history and recorded a season-best 23.48 in the 200m dash. Israel Ramsay leaped to a second-place showing in the high jump with a season-best 1.70m (5-06.75). Samantha Hall tossed 54.62m (179-02.25) in the discus to earn second overall.

On the men’s side, Alejandro Alcazar notched a personal-best 50.22 in the 400m for 12th place overall. Yinka Oyebanjo-Odofin garnered fourth place in the 400m hurdles for a personal-best of 56.06. In the 1,500m Michael Saruni clocked a personal-best 3:47.73 to earn gold, while Evans Kiprono ran his personal-best 3:59.45 for 10th place overall.

In his first race of the outdoor season, freshman Michael Saruni won the 800m with a time of 1:57.19 and teammate Jonah Koech followed for a second-place finish stopping the clock at 1:49.99.

Sohpmore Karol Koncos garnered a fourth-place showing in the hammer throw with a toss of 61.24m (200-11). Donivan Ortega also earned fourth place in the triple jump with a leap of 14.00m (45-11) for a season-best. Senior James Bias clocked 10.70 for a third-place finish in the 100m dash.

Torrance, Ca. – Sophomore Winny Koech posted the fourth-fastest time (33:51.31) in program history in the 10,000m to highlight the action for the UTEP track and field team on the opening day of the Mt. SAC Relays.

Koech showed her competitiveness in the first 10,000m run of the outdoor season. Competing in the open elite invitational, which places amongst some of the best college and professional talent, the sophomore raced to a third-place finish.

Running in the 10,000m open, Gladys Jerotich finished with the eighth-fastest time (36:26.07) in program history to earn 29th overall.

On the men’s side, Daniel Cheruiyot competed in the 3,000m steeplechase. He grabbed 14th overall with a time of 9:03.31. That is the second-fastest time in C-USA this year.

Antony Kosgei ran in the 10,000m invitational elite. He clocked in at 30:25.77 for a 49th-place finish. It is the second-fastest-time in C-USA this season.

The UTEP track and field team return to action as they head to the Golden State for the Mt. SAC Relays (May 13-14) and the Jim Bush Collegiate Invitational (May 15).

It will be the first action for the Miners since competing in the Texas Relays two weeks ago.

Mt. SAC

Heading to Torrance, Calif. will see the 5 distance runners for the Miners on Friday. Daniel Cheruiyot in the 3,000m steeplechase set for a 4:30 p.m. PT start. Cheruiyot earned a fifth-place finish at the Texas Relays on March 29.

Three Miners will compete in the 10,000m run, Winny Koech and Gladys Jerotich will set to run at 6:00 p.m., followed by Antony Kosgei in the men’s open at 6:40 p.m. Cosmas Boit will compete in the 5,000m run set for 7:40 p.m.

UCLA Invitational

The second destination will see the Miners compete at the UCLA Drake Stadium on Saturday. Starting the day at 8:30 a.m., will be Abedola Akomolafe, Fayon Gonzales and Cierra Chenault in the hammer throw. Lucia Mokrasova and Tyler Ragin will compete in the long jump set for 10:00 a.m. Israel Ramsay returns to the high jump after placing second at the C-USA indoor championships.

Sophomore sensation, Tobi Amusan will race in the 100m dash set for 3:20 p.m. Amusan holds the nation’s fastest time in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.63. Lilian Koech will run in the 800m, after posting the third-fastest time (2:08.51) in the C-USA this season registered at the Texas Relays. Competing in the 400m dash will be Ada Benjamin, Florence Uwakwe, Imani Adams and Madison Gibson.

On the men’s side, Emmanuel Korir makes his return to the track after winning the 800m NCAA Championship on March 10. The freshman has made an immediate impact on the track setting an indoor school record in the 800m (1:46.75). Korir also recorded a world best 1:14.97 during the indoor season in the 600m. The distance runner will compete in the 800m at 3:45 p.m., along with sophomore Jonah Koech.

Competing in the 1,500m run will be Michael Saruni and Evans Kiprono. Saruni had an outstanding performance at the Texas Relays where he set the second-fastest outdoor school time in the 800 (1:45.82). The mid-distance runner competed against the 2012 Olympic silver medialist (Leonel Manzano) and the collegiate record holder (Donivan Brazier) in Austin. Saruni and Kiprono will be set to run at 5:05 p.m.

UTEP track and field member Tyler Ragin received the Conference USA Winter Spirit of Service Award, the league announced on Wednesday.

The junior has compiled more than 194 hours of community service this season, the majority of which was volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club of Central Georgia as a tutor, coach and mentor. She dedicated 30 hours at the R.E.A.L Academy helping with camps and organizing activities for kids.

The Macon, Georgia, native is a staunch supporter of driving while sober, as she volunteered at Mothers against Drunk Driving greeting walkers and spent additional time walking to end breast cancer at the AVON 39 event.

She also helped promote SAAC Hunger handing out flyers promoting hunger week.

Ragin is an organizational and corporate communications major with a marketing minor and earned a spot on the C-USA Commissioner�s Honor Roll list.

Ragin set a personal best of 5.79m (19-0.00) in the long jump at the Cherry and Silver meet. She scored points for the Miners in the long jump helping the women�s team secure their third consecutive C-USA team title.

AUSTIN � Tobi Amusan continues to dominate in the 100m hurdles as she claims gold (12.72), while also setting a new meet record at the 90th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, presented by Spectrum.

�Tobi and Michael had an outstanding performance this week, breaking two meet records in a historic event like this is outstanding,� UTEP head coach Mika Laaksonen said. �We still have to work hard with most of our athletes to get them going by the championship season.�

The sophomore came into this weekend with the nation�s fastest-time after running 12.63 at Kidd field and continues her undefeated outdoor season. Amusan�s time of 12.72 sets a new meet record previously held by Ashlee Williams (12.83) set in 2005.

In the women�s 1,500m run, Lilian Koech ran a personal-best of 4:22.12 tying the seventh-fastest time in school history, earning a second-place finish. Her time registers as the eighth-fastest time in the nation. Samantha Hall garnered a sixth-place showing the discus throw tossing for 50.52m (165-9).

The 4x400m relay team of Dreshanae Rolle, Florence Uwakwe, Madison Gibson and Ada Benjamin clocked a 3:40.95

Jonah Koech earned a sixth-place showing in the mile run with a time of 4:03.75.

The UTEP track and field program returns to the track April 13-15 for the Mt. SAC Distance Carnival and the UCLA Invitational.

Tobi Amusan continues to dominate the 100m hurdles as she clocked the fastest qualifying time in the 100m hurdles (12.75) Friday morning at the 90th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, presented by Spectrum.

The sophomore will compete at 1:17 p.m. (MT) and will be televised on the Longhorn Network.

The women�s 4x400m relay team also qualified for Saturday�s final, advancing with the sixth-fastest time (3:41.20). Despite a shaky handoff, the team comprised of Dreshanae Rolle, Florence Uwakwe, Madison Gibson and Ada Benjamin were able to stay composed and win their heat.

The 4x100m relay team of Israel Ramsay, (Tobi) Amusan, (Florence) Uwakwe and(Madison) Gibson just missed out of reaching the final by less than a second. The Miners clocked a time of 45.40. The last qualifying time came from Virginia Tech at 45.37.

Saturday�s slate will feature Samantha Hall in the women�s discus, which has a 1:30 p.m. (MT) start. Lilian Koech will participate in the 1,500m final set to start at 2:40 p.m., followed by the men�s mile run featuring Jonah Koech and 800m champion Michael Saruni. The meet will conclude with the 4x400m relay at 3:40 p.m.
