Medication Overuse Headaches: El Paso Back Clinic

Medication Overuse Headaches: El Paso Back Clinic

Medication overuse headaches – MOH comes from frequent or excessive use of pain-relieving medications, resulting in daily or near-daily headaches for which the drugs become less and less effective. They are also known as rebound headaches, medication misuse, or drug-induced headaches. It is a common disorder, with around one out of every 100 individuals experiencing these headaches yearly. They can be disabling, causing individuals to be less productive. Injury Medical Chiropractic and Functional Medicine Clinic can assess, diagnose, and manage headaches naturally with massage, adjustments, and decompression.

Medication Overuse Headaches: EP Chiropractic Team

Medication Overuse Headaches

The same medications that relieve headache pain can trigger headaches if used too often, triggering an unhealthy cycle. Diagnosis of medication overuse headaches means an individual must experience headaches more than 15 days a month for at least three months while taking pain-relieving and/or antimigraine meds and cannot find other cause/s for their headaches. It is more common in women and individuals with headache disorders, chronic pain conditions, and individuals dealing with depression and anxiety.

Symptoms

Symptoms can vary depending on the type of headache being treated and the medicine used. Common symptoms include:

  • They occur every day or nearly every day.
  • They usually start when waking up.
  • They improve with the medication but then return as it wears off.
  • Headache can feel like a dull, tension-type headache or more severe, like a migraine.

Other symptoms can include:

  • Sleep problems
  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Constipation
  • Irritability
  • Neck discomfort and pain symptoms
  • Weakness
  • Nasal stuffiness and/or Runny nose
  • Light sensitivity
  • Teary eyes
  • Sound sensitivity
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Medicines

Doctors and medical experts don’t know the exact reasons/causes why these headaches occur, and the risk varies depending on the medication. But most medicines have the potential to lead to overuse headaches, including:

Simple Pain Relievers

  • Common pain relievers like aspirin and acetaminophen like Tylenol can contribute to the condition. This is especially true if taking more than the recommended dosages.
  • Other pain relievers like ibuprofen – Advil, Motrin IB, and naproxen sodium – Aleve has shown to have a low risk of contributing to overuse headaches.

Combination Pain Relievers

  • Pain relievers that can be purchased at a store that combines caffeine, aspirin, and acetaminophen – Excedrin has been found to contribute to the condition.
  • This group also includes combination prescription medicines that contain butalbital – Butapap, and Lanorinal. Drugs that contain butalbital have a high risk of causing medication overuse headaches.

Migraine Medicines

  • Various migraine medicines have been linked with the condition. They include triptans – Imitrex, Zomig, and certain headache meds known as ergots, such as ergotamine – Ergomar. These medicines have a moderate risk of causing headaches.
  • The ergot dihydroergotamine – Migranal, Trudhesa have a lower risk of causing headaches.
  • A newer group of migraine medicines known as gepants appear not to cause headaches. Gepants include ubrogepant – Ubrelvy and rimegepant – Nurtec ODT.

Opioids

  • Opium-derived meds or synthetic compounds have a high risk of causing medication overuse headaches. They include combinations of codeine and acetaminophen.

Prevention and Chiropractic

The following steps can help prevent headaches:

  • Follow the label instructions of the medications and the instructions of the doctor.
  • Limit any headache medications taken as needed to relieve head pain to no more than two to three days a week.
  • Consult with a doctor if there is a need to take medications more than two days a week.
  • Contact a doctor if headaches present more than four days a month which could require headache-preventive medication.
  • Control and avoid anything that triggers headaches, like stress, dehydration, hunger, certain foods and drinks, and unhealthy sleep.

Chiropractic

Our team utilizes a personalized and combined treatment approach, including understanding the triggers. The team will work to understand each individual’s situation. A treatment plan can consist of the following:

  • Therapeutic massage to relax and release tight muscles and increase circulation.
  • Spinal manipulation and adjustments to realign the body, improve function and alleviate the stress on the nervous system.
  • Non-surgical spinal decompression.
  • Health Coaching
  • Nutritional recommendations
  • Posture retraining, work postures, ergonomics, targeted stretches/exercises, and relaxation techniques.

Monk Fruit Sugar Alternative: El Paso Back Clinic

Monk Fruit Sugar Alternative: El Paso Back Clinic

As individuals try to avoid sugar as best as possible, alternative sweeteners are becoming more popular. A new addition is monk fruit sweetener, also called monk fruit extract. Monk fruit is a small, round fruit native to southern China. Unlike some chemically based sugar alternatives, monk fruit extract is considered natural. The sweetener has been around for decades but has become more available in the United States. The zero-calorie extract can be used as a standalone sweetener in foods and drinks and as a flavor enhancer.

Monk Fruit Sugar Alternative: EP Functional Chiropractic Team

Monk Fruit Sugar Alternative

Manufacturers remove the seeds and skin, crush the fruit, and extract the juice, which is then dried into a concentrated powder. Unlike most fruits, the natural sugars in monk fruit are not what gives it its sweetness. Instead, the intense sweetness comes from antioxidants (commonly found in plant foods, antioxidants fight off free radicals that can cause health problems like cancer and heart disease) called mogrosides. The mogroside is the sweetest part of the fruit, with a taste over 100 times sweeter than sugar and no calories.

Safe For Consumption

Monk fruit has the generally recognized as safe -GRAS label from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration with no reported side effects. However, it is advised to read the ingredients label before buying this sweetener. Some of the cheaper products combine other sweeteners with monk fruit extract. Some contain erythritol, a sugar alcohol that can cause stomach bloating or upset stomach.

Use

It has been found to be a healthy option for lowering overall sugar intake. However, consuming monk fruit or any sweetener should be done in moderation and with a healthy nutrition plan. It comes in powder or liquid form. As a natural alternative, it can be used:

  • As s sugar substitute for favorite baking, cooking, soup, sauce recipes, etc.
  • For drinks like coffee, tea, lemonade, smoothies, etc.
  • Added on breakfast dishes like oatmeal or yogurt.
  • Whipped into frosting or a mousse.

The ultra-sweetness means that little is required as it goes a long way. It is recommended to drink regular water or tea and eat foods without the sweetener because, over time, the taste buds adjust and do not need the sweetener as much. Consult a doctor, dietician, or nutritionist to determine if this sugar alternative is right for you and the benefits.

Functional Fitness Conditioning: Back Clinic

Functional Fitness Conditioning: Back Clinic

Functional fitness conditioning exercises train the muscles for everyday activities safely and efficiently. It refers to exercises that simulate daily movements like standing, bending, reaching, jumping, twisting, pushing, pulling, squatting, lunging, turning, walking, and running. These exercises improve functional body strength to train the muscles to work together and prepare for daily tasks and chores that individuals do at home, at work, or in sports activities. Strengthening the muscles the same way they are needed for everyday tasks reduces the risk of injury, allowing individuals to go through the day without worrying about straining or pulling something.

Flat Back Syndrome

Flat Back Syndrome

Individuals believe that maintaining a straight/flat back is healthy. However, the back is made up of natural curves that allow flexibility and optimal movement. If there is a lack of these curves, it can lead to spine issues, discomfort, and pain. A common problem to develop from a spine lacking natural curvature is abnormal kyphosis. This is when the natural curve in the thoracic spine – mid-back or lumbar spine – low back disappears, which results in a flat back. Restoring the curvature can be challenging, as flatback syndrome requires chiropractic adjustments to gently shift and realign the spine back into a healthy curve and re-train the spine to maintain the curve.

Flat Back Syndrome

Causes of Flat Back Syndrome

Flatback syndrome is usually a result of muscle tightness in the lower back muscles, specifically in the psoas muscle. Or it could be degenerative disc disease, where the cartilage supporting the spine begins to weaken. Other causes include arthritis and osteoporosis. Practicing unhealthy posture habits can worsen these conditions, speeding up the loss of the spine’s curvature. Loss of spinal curvature does not occur rapidly, as the body will begin to present with symptoms. The following symptoms could be an indication:

  • Fatigue when trying to stand upright
  • Balance problems
  • Restricted mobility
  • Muscle spasms
  • Chronic low back pain
  • Thigh pain
  • Groin pain
  • Disc herniation

Back pain and problems with balance are the earliest warning signs of flatback syndrome.

Symptoms

Flatback symptoms usually get worse as the day progresses, with a sense of fatigue and increasing difficulty to stand upright. Individuals tend to flex or bend their hips and knees to get into an upright position. This can become an exhausting process as the day progresses. Individuals can also have symptoms of sciatica and/or spinal stenosis with leg pain and weakness that gets worse when walking. Neck and upper back pain can begin to present while straining to align themselves. The symptoms become disabling, often requiring pain medications that limit the individual’s ability to perform daily activities.

Realignment Treatment

A chiropractor must determine the severity of the deviation through a thorough assessment and examination. This shows the loss of curvature to help a chiropractor plan a realignment/remodeling adjustment schedule. Restoring a natural kyphosis is done through a combination of adjustments and bracing. Scheduled spinal adjustments will realign and shift the vertebrae back to neutral, while a back brace supports to prevent any deviation. Stretching and exercising relevant muscle groups is also part of a chiropractic treatment plan. An example is core exercises for strengthening the muscles supporting the spine.

Personalized Nutrition

Because the body is so complex and dynamic, there is no perfect fit when it comes to diet, exercise, or a combination. Fad diets typically recommend that individuals adhere to the same eating guidelines, indicating they will reach an expected result like fat loss. These diets work because they focus on a simple reduction in calorie intake, especially processed and fast foods. The problem is that some of these fad diets can restrict critical nutrients that negatively affect an individual’s health. More information about an individual’s body and how it works is an excellent resource in improving body composition and overall health. Personalized nutrition is an innovative and favorable approach to preventing and treating obesity and related conditions. This approach identifies:

  • Genetic markers
  • Dietary patterns
  • Environment
  • Metabolism

Educated recommendations can be made based on these factors.

Maintaining Joint Health With Chiropractic

Maintaining Joint Health With Chiropractic

Optimal joint health is vital to keeping the body moving. They allow us to function throughout the day and perform various tasks. When healthy joints become injured or damaged, the body loses mobility. Joint issues/pain primarily present in the shoulders, wrists, hands, knees, ankles, and spine. Healthy joints are necessary for the full range of motion and comfortable movement. To keep joints healthy and fully functioning, chiropractic treatment is recommended to alleviate joint pain and improve joint health.

Maintaining Joint Health With Chiropractic

Joint Health

  • Joints are designed to provide a full range of motion for the body parts they affect.
  • Joints are made to be able to endure weight and forces applied to them.
  • Every joint consists of two surfaces that make contact.

Types of joints include:

  • Ball-and-socket in the hip
  • Hinge joints in the knees and elbows.
  • Gliding joints in the spine.

The bones that make up the joint allow for movement, but the actual muscles pull the bones that generate movement.

  • The muscles are attached to bones by tendons.
  • Tendons are strong enough to facilitate movement and flexible to prevent damage to the muscle tissues.
  • Ligaments connect the bones and help to prevent uncontrolled movement.
  • The muscles, tendons, and ligaments are attached around each joint at specific positions and shaped to exact dimensions.
  • Synovial fluid lines the joints and lubricates the surfaces to reduce friction.

Injury and Conditions

Most injuries to joints occur from added and abnormal stresses placed on a joint.

  • A joint can become injured from a basic trauma accident. An ankle sprain, for example.
  • The ankle joint is protected by ligaments on the inside and outside.
  • When the ankle moves too far inward, the ligaments on the outside can tear.
  • The ankle swells, leading to pain.
  • In some instances, small pieces of bone and cartilage can also tear away.

Other injuries

  • Overuse/Repetitive stress injuries, also known as cumulative trauma disorders, can cause joint pain symptoms.
  • These injuries happen when stress is repeatedly placed on the joints.
  • The stress can come from:
  • Poor posture
  • Awkward/unusual positioning while working.
  • Little to no workstation ergonomics.

Arthritis

The most common cause of joint pain is arthritis.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis causes inflammation of the joints causing swollen and stiff joints, limiting mobility.
  • Osteoarthritis can also cause joint pain. This is when the joint cartilage breaks down from regular wear and tear.
  • The aging body becomes stiff, swollen and decreases the range of motion.

Other conditions

  • Pregnancy can place an incredible amount of pressure on the spine, knees, and hips as the body tries to balance itself with the added weight, causing joint pain.
  • Obesity can also lead to joint pain from the added weight and pressure.
  • Health conditions that cause inflammation can lead to joint pain, including Lyme disease and Lupus.
  • The jawbone is also a joint; Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction causes jaw pain, difficulty chewing and clicking, or locking.

Chiropractic can restore joint health.

Chiropractic can keep the joints in optimal health and functioning to the fullest. The objective is to activate the body’s natural ability to heal itself by improving the function of the central nervous system. Our team is dedicated to utilizing science-based chiropractic approaches to reduce pain and reverse painful conditions. It is also a natural method for relieving arthritis pain, slowing down the degenerative process, and helping to relubricate the joints. Mediterranean Diet Can Be a Great Starting Point

There’s no perfect diet. Although human bodies are basically the same, individuals respond differently to certain diets. Diets can only go so far. The individual still has to put in the work of following the diet, exercising, developing new healthy habits, and maintaining them. The Mediterranean diet was reviewed by a panel of nationally recognized experts in:

  • Nutrition
  • Food psychology
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease

They reviewed the diet profile to analyze certain categories. They included:

  • Ease of taking on the diet.
  • Weight loss effectiveness. This includes short-term and long-term.
  • Nutritional completeness based on Dietary Guidelines.
  • The diet’s potential for preventing and managing diabetes.
  • The diet’s potential for preventing and managing cardiovascular disease.

The findings found the Mediterranean diet to be one of the best because of the many health benefits that come from the dietary changes.

Lifestyle Adjustments and Chiropractic Enhancements

Lifestyle Adjustments and Chiropractic Enhancements

Individuals are realizing the enhancements that chiropractic produces along with lifestyle adjustments. Chiropractic is about total body health. This includes:

  • Alleviating pain from injuries and musculoskeletal conditions
  • Reversing low energy levels
  • Healthy lifestyle adjustment support
  • Neck Pain
  • Back Pain
  • Chronic Pain
  • Herniated Disc/s
  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Sciatica
  • Sports Injuries

Healthy living and regular chiropractic adjustments will elevate the body’s health to new levels.

Chiropractic unlocks the body’s potential

Getting to the root cause of any symptoms that are presenting and addressing them is essential before the body can be at its optimum. A common root cause of pain, low energy, and various general health complaints is spinal misalignment. Poor spinal alignment leads to poor nerve energy flow and poor blood circulation. When the body and nervous system function incorrectly, there is interference with the body’s ability to process normal functions that leads to various forms of dysfunction. A chiropractor can recognize the smallest of changes in the spine that could be affecting the body’s health.

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Lifestyle Adjustments and Chiropractic Enhancements

Good Health to Optimal Health

Restoring spinal alignment is the first step in improving body health. If condition/s are present, first the pain will need to be reduced and under management, then the energy can be increased. A chiropractor will recommend lifestyle adjustments to start building a routine to take good health to optimal health. Recommendations include:

Physical Activity/Exercise

Regular physical activity/exercise for weight management, building muscle and maintaining balance. Specific exercises could be recommended for spinal alignment and core strength reinforcement.

Health Coaching/Diet

The nutrients consumed can have positive and negative effects on the body’s ability to function and heal. A health coach and nutritionist can recommend a nutrition plan that will elevate the body’s health to new levels, increasing energy and helping with weight loss if it is necessary.

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Lifestyle Adjustments and Chiropractic Enhancements

Stress management techniques

Stress is a major player when it comes to poor health. Chiropractic can help develop techniques and strategies to manage stress and reduce the strain on the body’s systems. This could include sleep hygiene, mindfulness, and more.

Neutral spine training

Healthy posture is highly neglected during daily activities, especially when sitting or lying down. A chiropractor will educate the individual on how to hold the spine and posture optimally to reduce awkward positions and unnecessary strain.

Consult a Chiropractic Provider

When making lifestyle changes, a vital component is learning how to incorporate the new adjustments consistently. This encourages the adjustment into becoming a healthy habit that can maintain optimal body health.

Body Composition

Reducing stress levels

There are various techniques that support relaxation, and help turn off the stress response. Here are a few science-backed options:

  1. Free-range eggs
  2. Nuts
  3. Seeds
  4. Shellfish
  5. Parsley
  6. Garlic

Stress-related eating is associated with an increased craving for calorie-dense and highly palatable/tasty usually unhealthy foods. When stress rises, food cravings rise triggering fat gain.

Ease Stress and Anxiety With Natural Medicine

Ease Stress and Anxiety With Natural Medicine

Natural medicine for dealing with stress and taking initial steps can also help prevent and alleviate stress pain. With age, the body becomes more vulnerable to emotional and physical stress. The spine endures the effects of stress and can lead to back and/or neck pain. Chronic stress can also lead to chemical imbalances in the brain and overreaction/s. This produces a Hyperarousal or anxious state of mind. If frequent bouts of anxiety or stress are occurring the body is signaling that balance needs to be restored.

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Ease Stress and Anxiety With Natural Medicine

Steps to Control Stress

Take frequent physical and mental breaks

Throughout a day, there can be several and various stressful situations. Not letting the stress build-up is a skill that needs to be practiced. Every 50 minutes of work, take a 10-minute break to reduce any stress. This will increase productivity. In the middle or last break, practice deep breathing.

  • Inhale slowly until the air reaches the bottom of the stomach.
  • Exhale slowly like a balloon slowly releasing the air.
  • To achieve the full potential of deep breathing, every exhalation should last twice as long as each inhalation.

Caffeine reduction

Caffeine can be medicinal in small doses. It increases bile flow. This stimulates the gall bladder and reduces cholesterol. However, too much can interfere with the body’s systems that are responsible for stress response. Try to limit to one to two caffeinated drinks a week.

Regular physical activity

Physical activity is what helps remove waste products, specifically lactic and uric acids, from the muscles and nervous system. An excess of these acids makes the body edgy. Moderate activity prevents and reduces anxiety. Try to get in at least 10 to 15 minutes of activity in the morning and afternoon. A quick walk combined with deep breathing is perfect.

Plenty of sleep

Hard work and playing hard help the body to sleep to the fullest. An irregular sleep pattern or poor-quality sleep confuses the body. The body reacts abnormally. Examples like confusion, tension, an adrenaline rush kicks in when it is not needed. Chronic poor sleep makes the body more vulnerable to disease and chronic conditions.

11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Ease Stress and Anxiety With Natural Medicine

Natural Medicine Supplements

Natural medicine supplements have been shown to reduce mild to moderate stress and anxiety.

  • Before trying any vitamins, minerals, or herbal therapies check with a doctor. This is to ensure safety with any medical conditions like pregnancy, that could prevent an individual from taking certain supplements.
  • Also, make sure if taking any medications that could cause natural medicine supplements ineffective or create a dangerous situation.
  • The reason for this is if an individual takes several supplements and develops side effects, it becomes a challenge to figure out which is responsible.
  • Quality herbs and supplements can be purchased from a licensed naturopath physician, nutritionist, health coach, or from a health store.

Herbal supplements listed below can be taken for three months and then a two-week break should be implemented. This minimizes the potential for negative effects.

Vitamin B

The B vitamins, especially B6 and B12 help regulate the body’s response to stress and keeps the nervous system healthy.

  • Vitamin B complex formula that has at least 25 mg of B6 and also 1 mg of B12 can be taken twice a day.
  • These vitamins are optimized when used in combination with other nutrients like a multivitamin-mineral supplement also twice a day.
  • B12 in the form of hydroxocobalamin or methylcobalamin is better absorbed than the more common cyanocobalamin.
11860 Vista Del Sol, Ste. 128 Ease Stress and Anxiety With Natural Medicine

Kava

This is herbal supplement helps with anxiety and insomnia. It can help relieve acute and chronic anxiety without causing drowsiness or brain fog. Kava is effective for settling anxiety with no dependence potential. Kava should be avoided if there is regular alcohol consumption or if taking Valium, Xanax, sleeping pills, like Seconal or Halcion, or anti-depressants, like Prozac or Zoloft.

Valerian

The Body’s Composition

Stress Can Throw Off Diet and Sleep

Achieving healthy body composition is more than just building muscle and losing fat. Proper diet and getting enough sleep are necessary to make meaningful progress. With chronic stress or poor sleep, this cannot be achieved. Depressive symptoms can be associated with obesity, and anxiety and depression can trigger emotional eating and weight gain. Proper stress management means making sure there are positive strategies, techniques that can be turned to in time of need. Without a plan, stress will cause health problems and will be a significant barrier when trying to achieve fitness and health goals.
