Living a sedentary lifestyle, improper form or injury while participating in sports or physical activities, obesity, and age can alter the natural function of the body and lead to sciatica.
Individuals who spend an extended period of time sitting, especially with an incorrect slouching posture, can increase the risk of developing spine conditions. Also, performing a sport or physical activity incorrectly can cause injury that may often result in sciatica. And last, physical changes in an individuals body, such as obesity and/or aging, can also cause sciatica.
Fortunately, there are several treatment options for individuals with sciatica symptoms. Chiropractic care for sciatica focuses on spinal adjustments and manual manipulations to gradually restore the natural condition of the spine.Alternatively, a chiropractor may also recommend strengthening exercises as a follow up treatment for sciatica. Its important to always consult a medical professional before attempting any form of physical activity to prevent further injury for your condition.
Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C.,C.C.S.Ts insight:
Sciatica is defined as a set of symptoms, such as pain, numbness and tingling sensations, or weakness on the lower back, buttocks, or back of the leg, usually caused when a herniated disk or bone spur in the spine compresses the nerve. Various other types of conditions or direct trauma from an injury can cause symptoms of sciatica but, most of them are characterized by increased pressure on the spine. Numerous scientific studies have indicated that when an individual receives early treatment for their auto injuries, they have better outcomes than those individuals who chose to wait.
During a collision, whiplash injuries, the most common type of injury resulting after an accident, results when the complex tissues of the neck are stretched or torn by the force of movement. Its also common for individuals to not feel pain and other symptoms soon after the automobile accident but as the structures of the neck become irritated, swollen, and inflamed, the symptoms of neck pain and stiffness can become present a couple of days after the initial event.
When the body suffers direct trauma, it responds to the injury by restricting movement and sending white blood cells to the affected region to begin healing the tissues. In this process, the body will then continue repairing the injured area by developing scar tissue. The issue with scar tissue involves the joints in the neck, which already have a moderately limited range of motion. Scar tissue reduces the necks limited mobility even further and, without proper treatment, this can lead to chronic pain, and permanent limited mobility, including spinal degeneration on the joints.
Early treatment from automobile injuries can help avoid complications by increasing the movement of the injured area and by preventing the development of scar tissue. If youve been involved in an auto collision resulting in neck pain and other symptoms, its essential to seek immediate medical attention to prevent the symptoms and other complications from developing and/or worsening.
Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C.,C.C.S.T’s insight:
After being involved in an automobile accident, its important for people to seek medical attention in order to diagnose and treat any possible injuries but, a majority of people often prefer to delay their treatment. Because most automobile accident injuries occur on the musculoskeletal level, many people choose to delay seeking treatment until they begin to experience symptoms but, this can actually lead to further issues. Weightlifting is a common type of sport or physical activity many individuals prefer for strengthening their upper body muscles but weightlifting also commonly results in injury. By following a few safety tips, you can prevent hurting yourself while weightlifting to continue training your body effectively.
The most popular weight lifting routines today mainly focus on completing a workout within a limited amount of time. Using a fixed group of exercises, the point of this type of workout is to complete the routines as quickly as each person is individually able to. Focusing on speed during an exercise or physical activity can be a major factor for potential injury. Training is about working out accordingly at the most appropriate tempo for each weight and lift.Slowing down the tempo while weight lifting will help increase the amount of energy an individual has to finish a lift. Additionally, taking a sufficient amount of time for rest in between sets can help prepare an individual both mentally and physically for the next exercise.
Then, when considering safety measures for injury prevention, an individual should note that their exercise routines for weight lifting should include lifts that strengthen and both the front and back sides of the body.Balancing exercises for the entire body will help strengthen the various muscles of the body as well as avoid overusing and underusing other muscle groups and risk an injury.
Most importantly, in order to avoid injury, an individual should never sacrifice form while lifting. Performing each lift with correct form is the best way to avoid an injury. Lifting weights that are heavier than an individuals normal lifting weight, lifting the weights rapidly, or simply being unfamiliar with the proper way to lift, are all ways that compromise form and could cause an injury.
Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C.,C.C.S.T’s insight:
There is an extensive variation of exercises and sports today, each which can specifically focus on strengthening different groups of muscles in the body. The variety of workouts can be suitable for enhancing every individuals fitness needs. Regardless of the fitness routine an individual chooses, injury prevention should be the most important part of anyones workout. As an individuals increase their cardiovascular activity, sprains and muscle strains on the surrounding tissues of the hamstrings, quadriceps, and calf muscles become several of the most common type of injuries. Back injuries also become more frequent during periods of higher activity. More severe types of injuries can often lead to muscle, tendon, or ligament tears as well as bone fractures. A successful exercise program provides a complete training routine which equally conditions different muscle groups while reducing the chance of injury. In addition, seeking chiropractic care and physical therapy to help during injury prevention can further maximize an individuals performance.
Exercise-related injuries mainly occur due to improper biomechanics. The improper movements of an individuals structure during physical activities or sports are often the root cause of spinal misalignments and muscle imbalances. If the body is not moving or functioning the way it was designed to, it can place unnecessary pressure and stress on a single side of the body or an incorrect area of the body.
An injury and its associated symptoms, can tremendously reduce an individuals ability to perform to their fullest capacity, ultimately altering an individuals lifestyle. Regular chiropractic care and massage therapy can help diagnose and determine the source of your injury as well as help treat the injury and its symptoms.Combining chiropractic care along with physical exercise this summer can ultimately improve your fitness, health and wellbeing.
Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C., C.C.S.Ts insight:
With summer just around the corner, increasingly more people are starting to break out of their sedentary winter season routines and activity levels are on the rise. This increase of cardiovascular activities, such as running, biking, swimming, and other exercises, have many benefits in the body but, as with any type of physical activity, with an increase in physical activity, there is also a higher chance of injury. Over the last 10 years, new research has found that TMJ and its well-known symptoms resulting after an auto accident could actually originate from neck complications. After a neck injury, the pain signals travel from the spine to the brainstem. In this process, the nerves from numerous areas of the body also travel into the brainstem where they will gather together before being transmitted to the pain centers of the brain. As the nerve signals converge, the various signals can become crossed and confused.
The nerves found on the jaw connect through the neck with pain receptors from the spine. As chronic pain signals from an automobile injury trigger an over-stimulation, an individual suffering from a neck injury such as whiplash can also experience pain in other areas of the head, including the jaw. The jaw then reacts to the constant symptoms of pain by tensing up the muscles surrounding the jaw, causing even more pain and discomfort.
Chiropractic care is an effective treatment option for individuals whove experienced damage or injury as a result of an auto accident. With the use of spinal adjustments, manual manipulation, and occasional stretches and exercises, a chiropractor can help a person with temporomandibular joint disorders and other neck complications recover from their injuries. By getting to the root cause of your pain, a chiropractor can get you back on the road to health.
Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C.,C.C.S.T’s insight:
Temporomandibular joint disorder, also known as TMJ, is a condition where pain and discomfort affect the joint and muscles of the jaw which control jaw movement. Individuals with TMJ experience symptoms of pain and tenderness in the jaw and around the ear, have difficulty and discomfort while chewing, and restricted mobility of the joint in the jaw when opening and closing the mouth. Although often occurring from unknown causes, jaw pain can commonly result after an automobile injury, including if there was no direct trauma to the jaw. Incorporating exercise into our days helps augment and manage our health, fitness, and wellness, primarily because of its ability to balance the levels of insulin within the body. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas which triggers the body to use sugar, or glucose, from carbohydrates in the food we eat to produce energy as well as store glucose for future use.Another major benefit of participating in regular physical activity is its capacity to boost the immune system. Exercising can alter the function in antibodies and white blood cells where these begin to circulate quicker to detect illnesses rapidly.
Physical exercise can also help reduce stress because it boosts the production of endorphins in the brain, neurotransmitters in charge of making you feel good. Other great benefits of exercise include weight control and improved eating habits, increasing good cholesterol, HDL, in the body and decreasing triglyceride levels, which can increase the risk of heart disease. Regular physical activity can help prolong life as it reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke and improves and promotes a good sense of well-being. Exercises specifically focused toward strengthening musculoskeletal weaknesses and imbalances can enhance and speed up the recovery process for individuals whove suffered an injury and have started medical treatment.
Viewing exercise as a necessary part of your day can help many people build a habit to exercise. Making an exercise schedule can ideally be a good way to keep it in track. The good thing about exercise is that there are a wide variety of types, some which can be done in a minimum amount of time while still providing maximum results.
Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C.,C.C.S.T’s insight:
Exercise is beneficial for people of all ages as it enhances and maintains overall health, physical fitness, and wellness. Following a regular exercise routine as part of your lifestyle can offer your body tremendous benefits. However, in todays world, many people struggle to find the appropriate opportunity during their busy schedules to participate in physical activities. Its crucial to keep in mind though that exercise should be just as important for an individuals day as eating, sleeping, and breathing. Chiropractic care focuses on treating spinal injuries or conditions, as well as other musculoskeletal traumas or disorders, through the use of spinal adjustments, manual manipulation, and occasionally, a set of recommended exercises and stretches.Chiropractic treatment can benefit people with a variety of complications as well as children. Spine Health is essential for all ages.Infants, for example, can often experience trauma on the head and neck during birth through the normal procedures of labor.
Chiropractic adjustments in a growing child can help align their spine in the case of early subluxations, or spinal misalignments. Properly aligning a childs developing spine can help prevent the development of various ailments as well as maintain a normal formation of the bones in the spine.Regular adjustments can also be especially useful for both younger and older children because of the increased number of falls and/or accidents that may occur through their normal physical activities on the playground or in the sports arena.
Chiropractic care can be especially useful for correcting abnormal spinal development disorders such as scoliosis in children.Through early diagnosis and treatment of a child with scoliosis, a chiropractor can use regular spinal adjustments along with an appropriate follow up of exercises to properly align the spine of a child and allow the spine to develop appropriately, improving their overall spinal health in the future.
Chiropractors are also specifically trained to implement adjustments especially designed for babies and young adults. Chiropractic care provides a safe and natural way that is effective towards children to prevent and treat many different injuries and conditions.
Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C.,C.C.S.T’s insight:
Chiropractic treatment can benefit people with a variety of complications and, just the same as its recommended for many adults, chiropractic can also be used with children.
