DENTON, Texas� Maria Paula Medina posted a dominant straight set victory but a short-handed UTEP tennis team was upended by Marshall, 4-1, on Thursday in the first round of the 2017 Conference USA Women�s Tennis Championship in Denton, Texas. The 14th seeded Miners (4-14), whose season has been plagued by injury, had to forfeit a double�s team on court three, giving the No. 3 Thundering Herd (14-9) a cushion in doubles play.
In doubles play, Raven Bennett and Duda Santos, both nursing injuries, forfeited their match on court three. The doubles point was decided when Milou Pietersz and Lois Wagenvoort fell to Anna Pomyatinskaya and Derya Turhan 6-2 on court one. Maria Paula Medina and Daphne Visscher�s close match with Rachael Morales and Maddie Silver was left unfinished at 4-4.
Though they were at a disadvantage going into doubles play, the Miners had a full line-up for singles play. Santos battled the Intercollegiate Tennis Association�s No. 117 ranked singles player in Marshall�s Turhan, dropping 6-0, 6-1. On court four, Wagenvoort fell to Pomyatinskaya 6-2, 6-1.
The Miners� first point came from Medina�s straight set dominance of the Herd�s Nikola Novackova, 6-3, 6-3 on court six. Bennett stole set one from Daniela Dankanych 7-5 but dropped the second set 6-2 at the No. 5 position. Pietersz, playing the No. 2, also won her first set against Silver 6-4, but slipped in a tight 6-5 set two.
Before Bennett and Pietersz�s matches were completed, Marshall�s Morales ended the match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Visscher on court three, ending UTEP�s run in the tournament and 2016-17 season.

The UTEP volleyball team announced its tentative 2017 fall schedule. Thirteen home matches, including two home tournaments, will take place in Memorial Gym this fall. UTEP will open the year with 14 non-conference matches, including Texas Tech and New Mexico, before Conference USA play begins September 22.
�There�s a couple teams we saw last year,� head coach Holly Watts said. �We played at North Dakota and we played against Samford and to have them play here at our home court will be nice. They were both tough matches last year, but tough matches that we played well.�
The fall schedule kicks off August 25-26 in a rotating tournament in San Antonio, Texas, when the Miners take on Lafayette, Tulane, and UIW. The Miners will return home on Aug. 30 to take on Big 12�s Texas Tech in Memorial Gym.
The Miners will also host two tournaments in as many weeks, beginning with the Glory Road Invitational, which will bring New Mexico, Youngstown, and North Dakota, Sept. 1-2 and ending with the Borderland Invitational featuring Samford, Delaware State, and Abilene Christian Sept. 8-10.
�It�ll be great to have two tournaments, two weekends back to back right here at home,� Watts said. �It�ll give our fans something to watch early in the season so they�ll be excited to come back and watch more as the season goes on.�
A trip to Portland, Oregon, for the Portland Tournament Sept. 15-16 will round out tournament play for the Miners before the Interstate 10 rivalry match against NM State Sept. 19 in Las Cruses, N.M.
Conference USA play will begin with a two game home stand beginning with a Sept. 22 meeting with Rice and ending with a Sept. 24 match against UAB.
The Miners will then hit the road Oct. 1-8 for three matches against UTSA, Charlotte, and Southern Miss.
�That�s probably our toughest road trip in terms of logistics and getting to those campuses,� Watts said of the October weekend. �I�m glad that�s early in the season as far as the conference play goes, but really, we flip back and forth every weekend except for that stretch of three matches. We don�t have a game on the Friday before that Sunday away so I think its going to work out.�
The team will play host to North Texas Oct. 13 and have a rematch with UTSA at Memorial Gym that Sunday. The Miners will go to Bowling Green, KY, to face WKU, then meet with Rice again in Houston.
LA Tech and Middle Tennessee will battle the Miners Oct. 27 and 29, respectively, at Memorial Gym before the Orange and Blue make a trip to Florida to face FIU and FAU. Conference USA play will end with Marshall on Nov. 8 in Memorial Gym.
The Miners will face New Mexico in a non-conference matchup in Albuquerque before the Conference USA Tournament hosted by WKU beginning Nov. 17.
�We are playing some teams that have been to the NCAA Tournament recently so theres a level of teams that would be good wins,� Watts said. �At the same time, there�s some opportunities to win quite a few matches, so hopefully we�ll take care of business and get some wins.�

FORT MYERS, FL. � The UTEP women�s golf team put the finishing touches on the 2016-17 season by finishing eighth at the Conference USA Championships on Wednesday.
The Miners shot 909 as a team with rounds of 307, 299 and 303. Old Dominion captured the title (289-298-289-876), followed by Middle Tennessee (292-291-301-884), UTSA (298-297-294-889), FIU (305-293-296-894), Southern Miss (300-303-294-897), WKU (305-295-306-906), UAB (296-303-308-907), UTEP, Marshall (304-309-303-916), North Texas (306-306-312-924) and Florida Atlantic (307-307-314-928).
Middle Tennessee�s Jenna Burris was the individual winner with a seven-under-par 209 (67-70-72). She was one of three players to shoot under par for the tournament.
UTEP�s Lily Downs tied for ninth place (75-74-73-222), June Ting tied for 18th place (78-74-73-225), Abbie Anghelescu tied for 42nd place (84-75-77-236), Alisa Rodriguez finished 45th (78-76-83-237) and Sofia Castiello tied for 46th place (76-82-80-238).
Overall it was a much-improved season for the Miners, who won a tournament title (Lady Red Wolf Classic in Jonesboro, Ark.), picked up three runner-up finishes, and five top-five finishes overall.
Downs, Ting and Anghelescu are all slated to return in 2017-18. Downs led the Miners in scoring average (75.1), with Ting second (75.6). Both won tournaments this season, and tied for the team lead with seven top-20 showings.

FORT MYERS, FL. � The UTEP women�s golf team enjoyed an improved second day at the Conference USA Championships.� The Miners followed up their 307�on Monday with a 299 on Tuesday, and rose two spots in the team standings in the process.
UTEP (307-299-606) is in eighth place.� Middle Tennessee is first (292-291-583), Old Dominion second (289-298-587) and UTSA third (298-297-595) out of 11 teams.� The final round will take place on Wednesday.
The Miners� Lily Downs jumped from 16th place to 14th after shooting a two-over-par 74 on Tuesday.� The sophomore stands at 149 (75-74) through 36 holes and is 12 strokes behind Middle Tennessee�s Jenna Burris, who is in atop the leaderboard with a seven-under-par 137 (67-70).� Downs recorded three birdies in round two, including on the three-par hole no. 17.

UTEP senior Samantha Hall was named Conference USA Female Athlete of the Week for her performance in the discus and shot put this past weekend at the 2017 Jim Bush Collegiate Invitational, announced the league office Tuesday afternoon.
The senior recorded a season best of 54.62m (179-2) in the discus earning a second-place showing. Her mark ranks first in C-USA and 21st nationally.
Hall tossed the shot put out to 13.86m (45-5.75) to finish seventh overall and rank 13th in C-USA. This is Hall�s first C-USA athlete of the week award of the outdoor season and the second of her career.
The Miners will return home for the UTEP Invitational at Kid Field on Saturday.

The UTEP women�s golf team is tied for 10th place after day one of the Conference USA Championship on Monday in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Miners shot a 19-over-par 307 over the opening 18 holes. Old Dominion tops the 11-team field with a one-over 289, with Middle Tennessee in second (292) and UAB in third (296).

IRVING, Texas � The UTEP women�s tennis team will begin play at the 2017 Conference USA Championship on Thursday, April 20, as the 14th seed, the league announced Monday. The Miners (4-13, 0-1 C-USA) will face No. 3 seed Marshall (13-9, 1-1 C-USA) at 12 p.m. (CT) at Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton, Texas.
If the Miners win, they will face the winner between No. 6 WKU and No. 11 Florida Atlantic on Friday, April 21 in the quarterfinals. Defending tournament champion Rice and FIU earned a first round bye with the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively. In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings, Rice is ranked No. 35 and FIU No. 37 among Division I schools.
All six Miners will make the trip to Denton. Milou Pietersz, Lois Wagenvoort, Raven Bennett, Daphne Visscher, Duda Santos and Maria Paula Medina fielded a full line up last Friday, when the Miners fell 4-3 to NM State. It was the first time since March 4 that the injury-plagued team had a full lineup, helping the squad to the doubles point and two singles wins against the Aggies.
The Miners are led by Pietersz and Wagenvoort, who link up for the No. 1 spot in doubles. The duo recorded their first shutout of the spring season when they blankedNM State�s Vanessa Valdez and Rebecca Keijzerwaard 6-0. In singles play, Pietersz had a comeback victory against Valdez in three sets (0-6, 6-1, 7-5) at the No. 2 spot, while Wagenvoort added to the Miners� score with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory on court four. Bennett sports a team-best 5-5 singles record in dual match play primarily at the No. 6 position.
The Thundering Herd slipped by Old Dominion 4-3 on March 19, but fell to Rice, 4-1, on April 9 in Houston. The Herd has defeated four Power Five conference teams in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Virginia Tech and Penn State.
Five Marshall players have recorded at least 10 singles wins, led by senior Derya Turhan, who sports a 17-3 record at the No. 1 position. Stephanie Smith, who is 13-5 in singles at the No. 3 spot, pairs up with Daniela Dankanych at no. 3 doubles, earning Marshall�s top doubles record at 11-4.
The first round of the tournament will begin with No. 8 Southern Miss taking on No. 9 UTSA and No. 7 Charlotte facing No. 10 Louisiana Tech, with both matches at 9 a.m. (CT). The winner between Southern Miss and UTSA will face top-seeded Rice in the quarterfinals.
Other first round matchups include tournament host No. 5 North Texas battling No. 12 Middle Tennessee at 12 p.m. (CT) and No. 4 Old Dominion facing No. 13 UAB at 3 p.m. (CT).
The Conference USA Championship match will take place on Sunday at 10 a.m. CT.
