To Stretch Or Strengthen Connective Tissues Using The MET Technique

Introduction

The human body has numerous musculoskeletal muscles that allow the host to do various movements without pain or discomfort. Each muscle group has tendons, muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues surrounding the skeletal joint and protecting the skeletal structure. Each muscle group in the body allows different functions, from turning the neck from side to side to enabling the legs to provide motion when walking. Now naturally, the body ages over time, which can lead to muscle weakness in the muscle groups and affect the connective tissues, or various disruptors can develop in a healthy body that can also affect the muscles and connective tissues. Fortunately, the multiple muscle groups and connective tissues are affected by overlapping risk profiles. In that case, there are many treatments and techniques that many pain specialists utilize to restore the body and relieve pain-like symptoms associated with musculoskeletal disorders. Today’s article examines connective tissues, how conditions can affect the connective tissues, and how the MET technique stretches or strengthens the body’s connective tissue. What Are Connective Tissues?

 

The human body is a multiplex machine that is composed of many tissues that surround the skeletal joints and vital organs with the basic functions that the body produces. Research studies reveal that, as the name has implied, connective tissues in the body refer to the several different body tissues that connect and support the other tissues by binding them to the body. Now there are three different categories that connective tissue can be broken down into:

  • Loose connective tissue
  • Dense connective tissue
  • Specialized connective tissues

These three different connective tissue categories have functions that allow the body to perform properly and provide support to the rest of the musculoskeletal system. The dense connective tissues make up the body’s tendons and ligaments that move the hands and feet while having a higher collagen fiber density. The loose connective tissues help keep the vital organs in place. And finally, the specialized connective tissues are composed of adipose tissues, cartilage, lymphoid tissues, etc. When the body begins to age naturally or is dealing with issues affecting the connective tissues, it can develop musculoskeletal disorders associated with the connective tissue.

 

Disorders Affecting The Connective Tissues

Have you been experiencing muscle pain or weakness in your body? Do your hands or feet feel tired? Or do you feel stiffness and pain in your joints? Many pain-like symptoms are associated with musculoskeletal disorders affecting the body’s connective tissues. As stated earlier, when the body begins to age naturally, the various muscles in the body can develop into musculoskeletal disorders associated with the connective tissues. Aging can affect connective tissue function as the cartilage from the specialized connective tissues has less elasticity and changes the proteoglycan both quantitatively and qualitatively, according to the book, “Clinical Applications of Neuromuscular Techniques,” written by Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O., and Judith Walker DeLany, L.M.T. Additional research studies have revealed that environmental factors associated with the body’s immune system can affect the connective tissues. This is known as connective tissue disorder, and it can be comprised of numerous conditions that can affect the immune system and cause overlapping symptoms in the musculoskeletal system. This includes some of the following:

  • Inflammation in the joints causes them to lock up
  • Muscle weakness where myofascial entrapment affects the muscle fibers 
  • Fatigue
  • Vitamin deficiency

Have you been feeling stiffness in your muscles or joints? Does it hurt when you are bending over and lifting heavy objects? Or are you feeling tired constantly? When the body deals with these issues, it can affect more than the muscles and connective tissues. This can lead to symptoms of stiffness and aches in the joints while restricting the range of motion to the muscles. When this happens to the body, many pain specialists utilize MET (muscle energy technique) and relieve those symptoms. Studies reveal that MET is a manual treatment for soft tissue, helping mobilize the joints and stretch tight muscles and fascia to improve circulation to the connective tissues and drain the lymphatic system. Research studies reveal that since the muscles and joints are being held together by connective tissues, using the MET technique allows pain specialists to stretch the muscles and joints to release tension and other symptoms associated with pain. When pain specialists use the MET technique on the body, it can help strengthen the weaker muscles while paying attention to how short the muscles are affecting the body. While the MET technique can help support the muscles with combined physical therapy, it can help stretch the tight muscles and overworked connective tissues. This allows the body to be restored and get back to normal. Many pain specialists like chiropractic care allow the MET technique to stretch the trapped connective tissues and free the body’s structures to correct postural imbalances.

 

Conclusion

The body’s connective tissues support each muscle, organ, and skeletal structure. When issues affect the body, the various muscle groups, and connective tissues start to develop overlapping symptoms associated with pain. When pain-like symptoms affect the body, many people will go to a pain specialist and be treated using the MET technique to restore the muscles and body and return to normal.

Muscle tension happens when the muscles stay contracted after working, sports, exercise, and stress, presenting with stiffness and achiness that progresses to chronic myofascial pain. Myofascial is used to describe the connective tissues throughout the body. Myo refers to the muscles, and fascia refers to the body tissues. Myofascial pain syndrome describes muscle pain in various forms. Most individuals have experienced chronic muscle tension in muscle pain or tension headaches. Myofascial pain can vary, ranging from mild to severe. Chiropractic can provide treatment and post-prevention plans to eliminate the pain and strengthen the body.

Connective Tissue

Myofascial pain syndrome is a complex condition that could be repetitive stress injuries on the muscles or nervous system malfunction and is often characterized by symptoms like:

  • Muscle tenderness, soreness, and aches.
  • Sensitive areas all over the body – trigger points.
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep problems

Each symptom is not a sign of the condition, but it could be myofascial pain syndrome when combined and does not resolve with some time. This chronic pain disorder is associated with referred pain that appears in one part of the body but the root cause in another region.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic medicine will get to the root of the problem with a thorough diagnosis. This will be done through physical examination, medical history, and symptom review. The chiropractor will perform a detailed exam of the affected muscles, including a range of motion test, strength test, and palpations of suspected trigger points to see how the muscles respond, twitch, and/or cause pain in a specific pattern or region. Sometimes blood tests are ordered to look for other causes, like vitamin D deficiency or hypothyroidism. Chiropractic can combine treatment therapies that include:

Massage therapy

  • Therapeutic massage will loosen the tight, knotted muscles and relieve cramping and/or spasms.

Physical Therapy

  • Includes stretching, postural, and strengthening exercises.

Medication

Injections

  • Pain medications are directly injected into the trigger points.

Chiropractic physicians work on the whole body and not just the hurting areas. Chiropractors are trained to incorporate treatment with primary care and specialists. Patients receive education in exercise programs, corrective exercises, nutritional recommendations, and health coaching.

When we look at our patients, we try to figure out what is causing their ailments from living their best lives. Some practitioners would prescribe medications to alleviate pain. While other practitioners will start trying to figure out what is causing the patient to have these ailments. Here at Injury Medical Clinic, we talk to our patients about the importance of functional medicine and how it can benefit them. In this article, we will be discussing Connective Tissue Disorder and how it is linked to wheat-related disorders.

What is Connective Tissue Disorder?

CTD (Connective Tissue Disorder) is an autoimmune disorder that can affect the connective tissues such as the collagen and elastin in our skins. This disease is highly inflammatory and can occur alongside with other autoimmune diseases, and it is common if families have a history of Connective Tissue Disorder.

About 3% of the population has a connective tissue disorder, and it is most likely to occur in women than men. In fact, women who are diagnosed with connective tissue disorder have a ration of 10:1, compared to men.

CTD includes (but is not limited to) the following conditions:

  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): SLE is a widespread and chronic autoimmune condition, for unknown reasons, can cause the immune system to attack the body�s own tissue and organs, including joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain, blood, and skin.
  • Sjogren�s Syndrome: This autoimmune disease causes white blood cells to attack moisture-producing glands, such as the tear ducts and salivary glands. This can make it very difficult for the body to produce tears and saliva.
  • Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma): This condition causes the skin and connective tissue to harden and tighten.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): RA is a chronic inflammatory condition and an autoimmune disorder that can generally affect the lining of the joints, but mostly in the hands and feet. Rheumatoid arthritis causes painful swelling that can eventually lead to deformity and erosion in the joints and bones.
  • Polymyositis: This is a persistent inflammatory muscle disease that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles, which can affect your body movement.
  • Dermatomyositis: This is an uncommon inflammatory disease that is marked by muscle weakness and can cause a distinctive skin rash.

These conditions can group together and can be very hard to diagnose because of the research and many tests that the patient is taking. Surprisingly, the average patient suffers from symptoms for 3.6 years before meeting diagnostic criteria. And the systems alone are difficult to classify, and often mimic or overlap other conditions. Some of the symptoms include hair loss, muscle pain, numbness or tingling, inflammation, low-grade fever, weakness and fatigue, joint pain, sensitive skin, and rashes.

Increased Need For Advanced Testing and Early Diagnosis

Sadly though, patients wait longer when they have these conditions, and it can worsen in the process as it takes years to get diagnosed for CDT. Practitioners can use treatments on their patients, but the medications act as a band-aid to mask the symptoms, but it does not adequately address the root causes of the disease. Sometimes the symptoms can progress faster than the current diagnostic test. So if you want to make sure your patients have any autoimmune diseases, run a diagnostic test on them, so you can detect early stages of the disease and start treating them so it can go away.

ENA and ANA

Extractable nuclear antigen (ENA) is a blood test that looks for antibodies to about 6 or 7 different proteins in the body.

Antinuclear antibody (ANA) is used as an initial test that can help evaluate a person for an autoimmune disorder that can affect many tissues and organs throughout the body. It is most often used when practitioners are diagnosing patients for systemic lupus erythematosus.

Surprisingly ENA can be more predictive than ANA. However, patients were followed for 2 years, and about 20% of those patients developed positive ENA.

In a previous article, we mentioned the hidden problems that gluten does to the body. And surprisingly, any wheat-related disorders can exist on a spectrum, this includes wheat allergy, gluten sensitivity, and wheat sensitivity.

When a person, has the celiac disease, having any traces of wheat can actually upset their intestinal permeability and causing them to have a leaky gut.

The Connection to CTD and Celiac Disease

But how do connective tissue disorder and celiac disease are connected? Well, surprisingly, Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and celiac disease (CD) share multiple aspects in epidemiology and clinical manifestations. Both disorders have been proven to be influenced by comparable environmental factors and a recent incidental surge of associated antibodies. Even though they have different depositions, both of them are mediated by endogenous enzymes that target different tissues and organs.

However through functional medicine; local chiropractors and health coaches here at Injury Medical Clinic, strive to understand what do our patients need to make their bodies feel better. If we can use functional medicine to prevent leaky gut at the early stages and help our patients with any ailments that they may have, then we can gently push them into the right direction of exercising throughout the week (even if it is about thirty minutes) and eating nutritious, whole, organic foods; as well as, preventing their ailments coming back then their bodies can finally heal.
