CHIROPRACTIC SCOPE OF PRACTICE *

Texas statute and T.B.C.E. board rules define and interpret what a licensed chiropractor can do in Texas.  Many chiropractors are trained to provide more services to patients than a Texas license permits, but training does not drive scope.  Each state has its specified scope.  Even specialty board training does not change one’s scope.  Therefore, it is essential to note that great detail has been tended not to confuse the public on the scope of Chiropractic and its place in society on this site, RSS feeds, and associated sites.

Texas Chiropractic Scope of Practice and Advertising: Texas statute and T.B.C.E. board rules define and interpret what a licensed chiropractor can do in Texas.  As noted above, many chiropractors are trained to provide far more services to patients than a Texas license permits, but training does not drive scope.  Each state has its specified scope, and specialty board training does not change Texas chiropractic scope.  Scope of Practice can only be changed by legislative action.  For example, Texas Chiropractors cannot treat diseases or disorders such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, infertility, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s, colic, diarrhea, asthma, or constipation.

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE IN MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS & THE TEXAS CHIROPRACTIC SCOPE ONLY *

The term Functional Medicine* or “F.M.” has created a need to explain F.M. as it pertains to the chiropractic scope.  With the advent of modern times, the use of the new term “Functional Medicine – F.M.” has created a scope paradigm with many specializations, including the practice of Chiropractic in Texas over the last decade.  This area of cross-scope integration occurs specifically with the musculoskeletal system.

“Functional Medicine” or “Functional Wellness” are elastic terms.  Functional Medicine is a systems biology-based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease as defined by the Institute of Functional Medicine.  Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual’s illness.  Our focus and directives are placed on diseases and disorders directly or indirectly affecting the musculoskeletal system, biomechanics of the spine, or the subluxation complex within limits and established parameters of our scope of practice and legalized jurisdiction.

Our use of them is precisely as it pertains to the musculoskeletal system, the spine, the subluxation complex, and the associated neurological structures.  Therefore, as noted, this paradoxical paradigm requires an explanation regarding the Texas Chiropractic clinical scope.  I have personally asked the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners about its position in using the term in electronic media.  The T.B.C.E.’s position has been such that when using the term “Functional Medicine,” we should position the term from a clinical point of view discussing treatments of chronic disorders pertaining to the musculoskeletal system and its supporting systems.

Working with an “In Scope” Functional Integrative Medicine Practitioner *

Understanding the new functional medicine paradigm as it pertains to the practice of Chiropractic is paramount.  We must define how Functional Health, Collaborative Functional Medicine, and the practice of Chiropractic intermingles and intertwines to bring a higher level of care for patients with musculoskeletal issues.

Functional Integrative Medicine, or “Functional Medicine,” serves as a bridge between conventional, allopathic medicine, and alternative healthcare.  We take an “integrative” approach to your healthcare by utilizing science-based investigation tools such as comprehensive clinical laboratory testing to determine the actual biochemical cause of a patient’s problem; we then use natural and alternative means to help stabilize and correct it.

Not to be confused with the practice of conventional “Medicine” as defined by Texas Law; Chiropractic-based Functional Medicine does not seek to diagnose or treat any diseases or medical conditions other than those of the human musculoskeletal system…only a licensed Medical or Osteopathic Doctor is allowed to do that in Texas.  What Functional Medicine does hope to accomplish is to investigate and determine the etiology of any structural or functional pathology or other abnormality of the biomechanical system; stabilize and correct any aberrant pathology or abnormality, and manage the state of the underlying biochemical physiology without the use of incisive procedures or drug therapy.

WHY CHIROPRACTIC AND FUNCTIONAL HEALTH INTEGRATION

Regardless of the system, organ, or tissue, the entire human is ultimately broken down into biochemical reactions and processes on a cellular level.  By detecting, correcting, and removing the interference, and maintaining proper biochemistry on such a deep level, the entirety of the human physiological condition, including the system of muscles and tendons and ligaments and bones and joints and associated tissues and nerves that move the body and maintain its form may be managed, and improved with much success utilizing advanced nutritional concepts such as homeopathic and botanical medicines, dietary & lifestyle modification, Chiropractic Manipulation, and complementary therapies.  In this regard, we may render an opinion on the overall state of a patient’s health and provide appropriate care options.  Referrals to other qualified healthcare professionals are made whenever necessary.

Note: All care provided by providers and specialists is limited by each provider’s clinical scope of practice, and these clinical scopes are defined and limited by licensure and jurisdiction.

Therefore, in simple terms, we only use “Functional Health, Functional Wellness & Functional Terms” and protocols to treat injuries or chronic disorders of the musculoskeletal system, specifically within our “Chiropractic Scope of Practice.” To that end, that is precisely how we use our terms and practice within our scope.

We also present additional researched clinical data about many other areas.  Functional Medicine* as a service of informational relay only to our readers.  With this in mind, a concerted effort has been placed on our sites to describe Functional Medicine Type Protocols as Functional Health or Functional Wellness Protocols. *

CLINICAL SCOPE & SPECIALTY PHYSICIAN COLLABORATION *

Over the last decades, research has shown that many chronic disorders of human physiology have concomitant clinical issues with associative and collaborative, causative inflammatory underlying etiologies that directly or indirectly affect the musculoskeletal system.  As such, clinical overlapping profiles and risk factors may lead to co-morbidities that must be considered when considering the whole clinical picture affecting a client.

It is incumbent on a doctor of Chiropractic, medical specialist and other treating physicians to remain in professional clinical scope and appropriately co-assess, co-diagnose, co-treat, discover root causes of inflammation and collaborate on clinically adaptive treatment programs.  With a patient-centered clinical approach, there must be a concerted effort to understand each patient’s pathological antecedents, triggers, and mediators to also understand the actual deep-rooted cause of their presenting disorders.

To that end, our goals focus on determining if disorders influencing the musculoskeletal system,  biomechanics of the spine, or the subluxation complex which may harbor associated, collaborative,  root-cause, or causative inflammatory etiological co-pathologies that require concurrent as well as cooperative, integrative care protocols with the appropriate clinical specialties for active care plans.  Treatments must have collaborative care plan paradigms that focus on the greater good for all patients.

BLOG INFORMATION SCOPE DISCUSSION *

Our postings and supportive studies focus on chiropractic scope procedures.  At times there may be supported researched claims presented on our sites and within our posts that have supported claims outside our clinical scope of practice.  In such cases, we provide the researched articles available to the public or the Texas Board of Chiropractic Examiners upon request to support the current research.

The scope of our information is limited to Chiropractic, musculoskeletal, physical medicines, wellness, contributing etiological viscerosomatic disturbances within clinical presentations, associated somatovisceral reflex clinical dynamics, sensitive health issues and/or functional medicine articles, topics, and discussions.  We use functional health & wellness protocols, nutrient support, dietary care plans, and other clinical measures to treat and support care for injuries or disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

Our posts, topics, subjects, and insights cover clinical matters, issues, and topics that relate to and support directly or indirectly our clinical scope of practice.*

In today’s deep big data informational era, there are many dis-orders, dis-eases and clinical presentations that demonstrate concomitant associations, coincidences, correlations, causations, overlapping profiles, overlapping risk profiles, co-morbidities, and risks of associated disorders that clinically intermingle in presentations and outcomes.

The clinician is mandated by the depth of our present clinical understandings and our oath to our patients to see the complete clinical picture whithin these integrated clinical paradigms and to treat accordingly.

For this reason we present this information for public and private consumtion in todays prevailing media options.
