Natural Health

Back Clinic Natural Health Functional Medicine Team. This is a natural approach to health care. It is a natural healing practice or a branch of alternative medicine that looks at nature for answers and explanations. There are a few Western forms of alternative medicine that NCCAM has classified as Biologically Based Therapies, as well as, Mind and Body Interventions used in stress management.

There is nothing magical about it. It is about natural healing therapies for prevention and healthy lifestyles. This means eating natural whole foods, nutritional supplements, physical exercise. This is nothing new, but it has evolved over the years within certain prevention parameters, and healthy lifestyles have proven to work repeatedly. There is nothing anti-intellectual or anti-scientific about it. All health, wellness, illness, and healing can be positively affected by simple and inexpensive natural therapies.

Stubborn Weight: Genetics or Diet?

Stubborn Weight: Genetics or Diet?

Today, there can be a lot of confusion when it comes to diet. The information received can be contradicting, confusing, and leave individuals feeling lost. This can often result in giving up on the diet and being left with joint pain, inflammation, discomfort, headaches and more.

The reason why there is more than one diet out there is because the research is always advancing. We have come to realize that everyone’s body reacts to different food sources and diets differently.

Genetic Code

As more and more research is being done, the more we are realizing how the genetic factor of individual cells directly correlate to a patient’s weight, diet, and changes as they age. For years, as one would get older and start gaining weight, we would attribute it to age. Although age is a factor, what we are finding now is that the genes are actually changing as we age and that is what creates this weight gain.

Sure enough, there are also genes that will tell us if you are susceptible to snacking. These genes can detect if you have a predisposition for heightened snacking or satiety. Satiety is the feeling of fullness after a meal. If you have reduced satiety, you tend to snack more because you do not feel as full after the meals you eat.

Getting your genes tested will allow the treatment plans created to be more personal and more geared to see results! Believe it or not, your genes can tell us if you are genetically prone to obesity, if you have weight loss resistance when it comes to carbohydrates, and how your body responds to exercise! Using the genes, we can see how many hours per week you will need for weight loss or to maintain your current weight.

Proven Methods

The best option is to know your genes so the diet plan can be geared more towards you directly. However, if that is not a possibility right away, there has been one diet that has been proven time and time again to work for almost everyone. This diet is referred to as the Ketogenic Diet.

In simple terms, the ketogenic diet is a low carb, high-fat diet. This diet works by sending the body into a state of ketosis which burns fat as fuel.

Research shows that those using a ketogenic diet demonstrated a higher percentage of weight loss and kept the weight off longer when compared to those who did a low-fat diet.

Available Resources

Considering the fact that there is misinformation about diets out there, proper education is going to be the key. As someone who has gone through dietary changes myself and figuring out what works best with my body with type 1 diabetes for optimal health, the right team is what made me successful.

Surround yourself with those who are continuously educating themselves and have a system in place. For example, we make sure our patients get one on one time with the doctor and a health coach. From here, the health coach and patient become connected through a virtual database allowing the patient’s food, weight, supplements, hydration, BMI, BIA, and activity to be tracked by the health coach. The health coach can then instant message or video chat the patient throughout the week to ensure they are staying on track, staying motivated, and answer any questions they may have!

Do not be left confused over diets anymore! Remember that your genetic code holds the key to the right diet for you.

The right diet has the ability to make individuals see the results they have been waiting for. It all comes down to the genes. As mentioned, genes change over time but they hold the code. If you are someone who has struggled with diets, feeling good, or are stuck at a certain weight, I highly recommend getting tested! The information you gain from this is so beneficial! I have seen the results first hand, and they are eye-opening. They let you know if you have the genetics that will hold onto fat. This knowledge can help us prevent health issues such as metabolic syndrome! – Kenna Vaughn, Senior Health Coach

The Benefits Of Elderberry

The Benefits Of Elderberry

Elderberry is an ancient plant that has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. In today’s world of medicine, Elderberry is most commonly used to treat cold and flu symptoms. However, Elderberry can also help to reduce headaches, inflammation, and even sciatica.

What Is Elderberry?

Elderberry is a genus of flowering plants. The most common is a tree. All parts of the tree can be consumed and used for health benefits. The flowers are typically white or cream-colored and can be eaten raw or cooked.

The berries have a tendency to be tart and are safest to consume when cooked. The tree bark has also been used as a diuretic.

Do You Have These Symptoms?

  • Inflammation?
  • Shaky, agitated, have tremors?
  • Suffering from flu and cold-like symptoms?
  • Abdominal swelling?
  • Immune problems?

How Can EdlerBerry Help?

Not feeling well is one of every individual’s least favorite things. It can range from coming down with a cold or flu, inflammation, or simply just a headache. All in all, when one these strikes, the first questions we ask ourselves is, “What I can take to relieve this?”.

Elderberries have been used to give the body extra immunity due to their health-promoting properties. Just like any other berry, Elderberries are high in antioxidants. The antioxidant properties Elderberry contains is what gives it most of its power.

Humans develop oxidative stress, and when the oxidative stress levels become elevated, the chances for developing diseases such as type 2 diabetes increase. Elderberry can help to reduce the levels of oxidative stress in the body.

Another great quality of Elderberries’ antioxidant power is the reduction of inflammation. There was a study done that showed after consumption of elderberry juice, the inflammation and oxidative tissue damage became reduced.

In addition to their high antioxidant value, they contain 60% of the daily recommended intake for Vitamin C.

Elderberry also contains polyphenols, which have been shown to help increase white blood cell count, thus supporting the immune system!

Benefits

There are many products that contain Elderberry to help individuals suffering from headaches, inflammation, and cold and flu symptoms. The company Xymogen makes products that are all-natural, vegan, and free of dairy, soy, and wheat. They have a product containing Elderberry that when taken at the first sign of a cold, can help reduce symptoms and the length of the cold. We are happy to have this amazing product and to be able to provide it to patients.

In total, Elderberries are an all-natural way to overcome not only the cold and flu season but to boose immunity all around. They can also be taken as a preventative measure to help with inflammation.

Elderberry is a great product! It is more of a holistic product and can be used to help patients feel better and recover from inflammation as well as cold and flu symptoms faster. I personally love the fact that is all-natural because the fewer chemicals that enter the body the better. In addition to it being all-natural, I also give elderberry to my young son to help him through cold and flu season and love the fact that I know the ingredients his medicine contains is not harmful. – Kenna Vaughn, Senior Health Coach

Functional Neurology: Foods to Naturally Increase Serotonin

Functional Neurology: Foods to Naturally Increase Serotonin

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that plays a fundamental role in a variety of brain and bodily functions. This chemical messenger helps regulate mood and social behavior as well as support our circadian rhythm or sleep-wake cycle. Research studies demonstrated that “healthy” serotonin levels are associated with positive feelings and longevity. We can naturally increase our serotonin levels by eating tryptophan-rich foods or taking tryptophan supplements. This essential amino acid is used to synthesize serotonin. In the following article, we will discuss foods that can help naturally increase serotonin.

Pineapple

According to several research studies, eating pineapple may boost bromelain, a well-known protein that can help suppress coughs as well as reduce the side-effects of chemotherapy in the brain and body. Combine pineapple with other tryptophan-rich foods to also naturally increase your serotonin levels.

Nuts and Seeds

All nuts and seeds are excellent sources of tryptophan. Research studies demonstrate that eating a handful of nuts and/or seeds every day can ultimately help lower your risk for respiratory health issues, heart disease, and cancer. Nuts and seeds are also excellent sources of vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber.

Salmon

Salmon is a well-known tryptophan-rich food that also has a variety of other nutritional benefits, including being another tremendous source of omega-3 fatty acids as well as helping to lower blood pressure and regulate cholesterol. Combine salmon with other tryptophan-rich foods to boost serotonin.

Turkey

There’s a good reason why many people take a relaxing nap on the couch after their Thanksgiving day meal. Turkey is basically filled with a lot of tryptophan.

Eggs

According to research studies, the amount of protein that is found in eggs can considerably help naturally increase tryptophan levels in your blood plasma, leading to the production of serotonin. And always make sure to never leave out the egg yolks. Egg yolks contain omega-3 fatty acids, biotin, choline, tyrosine, tryptophan, and a variety of other nutrients, many of which can provide you with many health benefits. Eggs also have antioxidant properties.

Cheese

Cheese is yet another tryptophan-rich food that you can eat to help naturally increase serotonin. Although you can eat many different types of cheese in a variety of ways, a popular meal you could make is mac and cheese which combines cheddar cheese with eggs and milk, other tryptophan-rich foods.

Tofu

Eating plenty of soy products like tofu can also help naturally increase serotonin because these are also full of tryptophan. Substitute tofu for any protein source as an excellent source of tryptophan for vegetarians and vegans. Tofu or soy products are also calcium-set and can provide us with calcium.

Nutrition and Serotonin

Because serotonin isn’t found in food, eating foods that have tryptophan, the amino acid used to synthesize serotonin, is fundamental to help naturally increase this neurotransmitter or chemical messenger in the brain and body. Eating foods that are also excellent sources of protein, iron, riboflavin, and vitamin B-6 generally have great amounts of this essential amino acid. However, eating tryptophan-rich foods alone won’t boost serotonin levels. Eating carbohydrates triggers the release of insulin which can promote the absorption of other amino acids while leaving more tryptophan in the bloodstream.

Combining tryptophan-rich foods with carbs can help naturally increase serotonin in the brain and body. Tryptophan has to compete with many other amino acids in order to penetrate the BBB and enter the brain from the bloodstream which is why the tryptophan in the foods we eat may ultimately have a minor effect on serotonin levels. However, this effect is different from tryptophan supplements that have pure tryptophan which can considerably boost serotonin. Always make sure to talk to your healthcare professional before taking any supplements. Eating tryptophan-rich foods can safely help increase serotonin.

Other Ways to Naturally Increase Serotonin

Eating tryptophan-rich foods and taking tryptophan supplements arent the only ways to naturally increase serotonin in the brain and body.

  • Take probiotics. Eating fiber can support gut bacteria that play a fundamental role in serotonin levels through the gut-brain connection.
  • Do Exercise. Research studies have shown that doing regular exercise and physical activity can help balance your mood.
  • Get Sunlight. Getting plenty of sunlight is a common remedy for seasonal depression. Research studies have shown a connection between being exposed to sunlight and serotonin levels in the brain and body. To boost your mood, try getting enough (but not too much) sunlight.
  • Be Positive. Research studies have also shown that simply being more positive can naturally help increase serotonin levels.

Additional Topic Discussion: Chronic Pain

Sudden pain is a natural response of the nervous system which helps to demonstrate possible injury. By way of instance, pain signals travel from an injured region through the nerves and spinal cord to the brain. Pain is generally less severe as the injury heals, however, chronic pain is different than the average type of pain. With chronic pain, the human body will continue sending pain signals to the brain, regardless if the injury has healed. Chronic pain can last for several weeks to even several years. Chronic pain can tremendously affect a patient’s mobility and it can reduce flexibility, strength, and endurance.

Functional Neurology: Natural Ways to Increase Serotonin

Functional Neurology: Natural Ways to Increase Serotonin

Serotonin is a well-known neurotransmitter that plays an essential role in various functions of the brain and body, including mood and digestion. This chemical messenger helps promote positive feelings and social behavior, control appetite, support learning and memory as well as regulate our circadian rhythm or sleep-wake cycle. However, serotonin deficiencies can also cause several health issues, including anxiety, depression, sleep problems, fatigue, abnormal appetite and cravings as well as nausea and digestive problems. In the following article, we will discuss natural ways to increase serotonin.

Eat Tryptophan-rich Foods

Although serotonin isn’t directly found in food, you can eat tryptophan-rich foods. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that the brain and body use to turn it into serotonin. Tryptophan is found in high-protein foods, such as turkey and salmon. However, simply eating plenty of tryptophan-rich foods isn’t enough to help naturally increase serotonin levels. Tryptophan-rich foods are generally even higher in other essential amino acids and these other substances are more likely than tryptophan to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) or the protective shield that controls what compounds enter the brain from the bloodstream. Healthcare professionals believe that eating carbohydrates with tryptophan-rich foods can help more of this essential amino acid enter the brain.

Take Probiotics

Healthcare professionals recommend adding more probiotics into your diet as another natural way to increase serotonin. Taking probiotic supplements or eating probiotic-rich foods, such as yogurt and fermented foods like kimchi or sauerkraut, can trigger the release of tryptophan into the bloodstream.

Get Enough Sunlight

Several research studies have demonstrated that serotonin can typically be lower during winter and higher during summer. Scientists have also found that, because serotonin can affect our mood, changes in serotonin levels during different seasons may actually be associated with seasonal affective disorders as well as other brain and mental health issues also associated with the seasons. Scientists suggest that the skin may be able to synthesize serotonin.

Do Exercise and Physical Activity

Exercise and physical activity can also trigger the release of tryptophan into the bloodstream from the brain. It can also reduce the number of other essential amino acids. This can ultimately help create an excellent scenario for more tryptophan to penetrate the BBB and enter the brain from the bloodstream.

Take Supplements

According to healthcare professionals, taking dietary supplements can help trigger the release of serotonin by increasing tryptophan. However, make sure to talk to your healthcare professional before taking any new supplements to prevent further health issues. Also, make sure to tell them if you are taking any over-the-counter or prescription drugs/medications, vitamins, and minerals, as well as any herbal remedies. Choose supplements made by a well-known manufacturer that can be researched for reports on the quality of their products. Supplements can naturally help increase serotonin levels, including:

Pure Tryptophan

Tryptophan supplements have more tryptophan than food which can make it more possible to penetrate the BBB and enter the brain from the bloodstream. A 2006 research study suggests that tryptophan supplements can also have an antidepressant effect in women but further evidence is still required.

SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine)

Taking SAMe supplements also seems to help increase serotonin levels which can help improve symptoms, such as depression. However, it’s not recommended to take it with any other supplements or drugs/medications that increase serotonin, including certain antidepressants and antipsychotics.

5-HTP

The substance 5-HTP can penetrate the BBB and enter the brain from the bloodstream to trigger the release of serotonin. A 2013 research study demonstrated that 5-HTP supplements were as effective as antidepressants in people with early symptoms like depression. Other research studies on taking 5-HTP supplements to help naturally increase serotonin and reduce symptoms of depression have ultimately demonstrated mixed results.

Get a Massage

Massage therapy can also help naturally increase serotonin as well as dopamine neurotransmitter or chemical messenger that controls mood and various other functions in the brain and body. Getting a massage can also help decrease cortisol, a hormone that is released by the brain with stress. Although you can visit a licensed massage therapist, this may not always be necessary. A 2004 research study evaluated 84 pregnant women with depression. The women who received massage therapy twice a week reported feeling decreased symptoms of depression and had increased serotonin levels.   Dr. Alex Jimenez Insights Image

Functional Neurology: Nutrition and Parkinson’s Disease

Approximately 1 million people in the United States have Parkinson’s disease (PD) and about 60,000 more people are diagnosed with the movement disorder every year. Common PD symptoms can include, muscle soreness, spasms, and tremors, however, symptoms may be different for each person. Although further research studies are still required to determine the causes of PD, scientists have found that the movement disorder is associated with a lack of dopamine in the human body. Healthcare professionals are starting to look for ways to naturally increase dopamine through a patient’s diet.

Other Parkinson’s disease symptoms, such as confusion and dementia, may also improve through diet and lifestyle modifications like exercise. Moreover, while drugs and/or medications, such as levodopa (Sinemet) and bromocriptine (Parlodel), are used to help control PD symptoms, there are currently no treatments that will help completely stop Parkinson’s disease symptoms and these can often have severe side effects. That’s why more people are starting to look for more natural treatments for Parkinson’s disease. In the following article, we will discuss the role of nutrition in Parkinson’s disease.

The Role of Nutrition in Parkinson’s Disease

Proper nutrition can help promote the body’s ability to control symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease as well as support overall health and wellness. Patients with PD should eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, protein-rich foods, including legumes and beans, and whole grains as well as drink enough water for overall well-being. Patients with PD should also consider eating “good” fats, such as nuts, olive oil, eggs, and fish as well as foods that are high in antioxidants to ultimately help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain. Patients with PD should be aware of several special considerations.

  • Dehydration: The use of drugs and/or medications to help control PD symptoms can also cause dehydration. Dehydration can cause fatigue that may also cause weakness, confusion, balance problems, and kidney health issues. PD patients should drink plenty of water and other fluids.
  • Constipation: Parkinsons disease can slow down the digestive system and cause constipation. Constipation is often a mild to moderate problem, however, severe constipation may cause the large intestine to become impacted. Eating plenty of fiber-rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, drinking enough water and other fluids, and exercise can also help patients with PD avoid constipation problems.
  • Drug and/or medication interaction: One of the most well-known drugs and/or medications commonly utilized to control PD symptoms, carbidopa-levodopa, is absorbed in the small intestine, however, that absorption can be interrupted if it’s taken immediately after eating a high-protein meal. Make sure to eat protein-rich foods at other times of the day in order to help maximize the effects of the drugs and/or medications.

Although there is no specific diet for Parkinson’s disease, the nutritional guidelines below may ultimately help regulate and manage PD symptoms, including:

  • Avoiding fad diets. PD patients should eat a variety of different foods, following the guidelines of the U.S. Department of Agriculture MyPlate program.
  • Eating a balanced diet. Eating fruits, vegetables, protein-rich foods, and whole grains can provide nutrients necessary for overall well-being.
  • Restricting sugar consumption. Eating too much sugar has many calories and few nutrients. It can also cause a variety of other health issues.
  • Decreasing salt and sodium consumption. Eating less salt and sodium can ultimately help decrease the risk of developing high blood pressure.
  • Adding foods that are high in antioxidants. Foods that are high in antioxidants can include brightly colored and dark fruits and/or vegetables.
  • Following a balanced diet and participate in exercise and physical activity. This can also help promote and support overall well-being.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight to prevent a variety of health issues. Your doctor can help determine what a healthy weight means for you.
  • Reducing or eliminating alcoholic beverages. Drinking too much alcohol can also cause a variety of health issues for several PD patients.
  • Drinking enough water and eating fiber-rich foods. Eating fiber and drinking water can help improve constipation and digestive health issues.
  • Taking drugs and/or medications with plenty of water. Drinking a full glass of water may help break down the medicine much more efficiently.
  • Restricting caffeine, alcohol, and sugar consumption. Taking these, especially before bed, can affect sleep and cause sleep deprivation.
  • Talking to a doctor about increasing Vitamin D intake. Vitamin D can help regulate and maintain bone health in patients with PD.
  • Snacking on small quantities of cashews, walnuts, and other nuts to promote brain health. Also, try to include berries, which have antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory foods like tuna, salmon, and dark, leafy green vegetables to ultimately help decrease oxidative stress and inflammation.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a movement disorder that affects the central nervous system. Common PD symptoms can include, muscle soreness, spasms, and tremors, however, symptoms may be different for each person. Research studies have demonstrated that nerve cell damage in the brain can decrease dopamine, a neurotransmitter and/or hormone, that can cause Parkinson’s disease. Healthcare professionals are starting to look for ways to naturally increase dopamine through a patient’s diet. Proper nutrition can help promote the body’s ability to control symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease as well as support overall well-being. Although there is no specific diet for Parkinson’s disease, several nutritional guidelines may ultimately help regulate and manage PD symptoms. – Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C., C.C.S.T. Insight

In the article above, we discussed the role of nutrition in Parkinson’s disease.

Functional Neurology: What is a Leaky Brain?

Functional Neurology: What is a Leaky Brain?

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIH), approximately 20 percent of the population in the United States are diagnosed with a brain health issue every year, with depression and phobias being the most common types of diagnosable mental health issues. Moreover, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the suicide rate in the United States had reached 13 for every 100,000 people in 2014, which is the highest it had ever been since 1986. Scientists are starting to associate brain health issues with inflammation and its effects on the blood-brain barrier.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a connection of blood vessels that protect the brain against harmful free radicals in the bloodstream. However, the blood-brain barrier is so effective at protecting the brain from these “harmful” components in the bloodstream, that it can ultimately even prevent drugs and/or medications from penetrating this security system to treat brain health issues. A research study published in Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics demonstrated that the effectiveness of antidepressants is only slightly more effective compared to placebos in the treatment of mental health issues.

What Causes a Leaky Brain?

Scientists continue to analyze ways to effectively penetrate the blood-brain barrier to treat brain health issues. Several research studies have also determined that inflammation may reduce the function of brain cells in the frontal lobe of people diagnosed with depression. Other scientists are starting to believe that antidepressants and medicines used to treat depression are ineffective because these don’t necessarily treat inflammation in the brain. When the blood-brain barrier is damaged or injured, harmful components can enter the brain through the bloodstream and cause neurodegenerative symptoms.

A “leaky brain” is a well-known term that is increasingly being used to describe blood-brain barrier permeability. A variety of blood tests, including those that measure the levels of the proteins occludin and zonulin, can be used to determine a leaky brain. Immunoglobulin levels may also be measured. Scientists also measure the levels of a molecule, known as microRNA-155, which increases with inflammation. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play the fundamental role of regulating immune reactions, with miR-155 as a biomarker for inflammation in the brain due to a leaky blood-brain barrier. According to various research studies, this molecule can cause small gaps to develop in the BBB which can ultimately cause inflammation and lead to a leaky brain.

Several different research studies have also discussed how inflammation on the blood-brain barrier can eventually cause a leaky brain. Meanwhile, other research studies have demonstrated a link between inflammation and a variety of psychiatric disorders. Scientists also demonstrated that pro-inflammatory cytokines can increase and cause increased blood-brain barrier permeability. Many harmful components can also affect the structure of the mitochondria and the blood-brain barrier. Microglial cells in the brain may also trigger and activate the release of molecules that can further affect the BBB.

Further evidence has also associated blood-brain barrier dysfunction with a leaky gut. Scientists have suggested treating an underlying leaky gut to help treat a leaky brain. According to research studies, intestinal permeability, or a leaky gut, may ultimately be associated with blood-brain barrier permeability. Bacteria, small molecules, and toxins in the blood are commonly found in celiac disease, a well-known problem caused by gluten sensitivity or intolerance. Although true celiac disease is considered to be rare, a leaky gut associated with celiac disease and brain health issues are considered to be more common.

One research study discusses the connection between the gut microbiome, inflammation, and the integrity of the blood-brain barrier. The scientists of a different research study discussed how a variety of treatments used to help improve the biodiversity of the gut microbiome, including a healthy diet and lifestyle modifications, fecal microbiota transplantation, prebiotics, and probiotics, have demonstrated to support the function of the gut-brain axis. Scientists believe it will be possible to use the gut microbiome to improve brain and mental health issues as well as to prevent further complications.

Too much inflammation may cause a variety of brain and mental health issues associated with blood-brain barrier permeability. Because many research studies have suggested the connection between a leaky gut and a leaky brain, maintaining a healthy gut microbiome may be an effective treatment for brain and mental health. Although the brain is protected by the blood-brain barrier, this security system can frequently prevent drugs and/or medications from being able to effectively treat many brain and mental health issues. Scientists have started working towards developing successful ways to allow treatments to penetrate the blood-brain barrier. – Dr. Alex Jimenez D.C., C.C.S.T. Insight

As previously mentioned, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIH) states that about 20 percent of Americans are diagnosed with a mental health issue every year, where depression and phobias are considered to be the most common types of diagnosable brain health issues. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recorded that the suicide rate in the United States reached 13 for every 100,000 people in 2014, which is the highest it has ever been since 1986. Scientists associate mental health issues with brain inflammation and how it causes a “leaky” blood-brain barrier.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a group of blood vessels that protect the brain against “harmful” components in the bloodstream. However, because the blood-brain barrier can be so effective at protecting the brain from these harmful free radicals in the bloodstream, it can ultimately prevent drugs and/or medications from successfully penetrating the BBB to treat mental health issues. Research studies published in Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics determined that the effectiveness of certain medicines can only be slightly more effective, compared to placebos, in the treatment of brain health issues.

Functional Neurology: 8 Steps to Improve a Leaky Blood-Brain Barrier

Functional Neurology: 8 Steps to Improve a Leaky Blood-Brain Barrier

How often do you feel agitated, easily upset, and nervous between meals? How often do you have difficulty concentrating before eating? How often does your energy level drop in the afternoon? Inflammation associated with a leaky blood-brain barrier can cause a variety of brain health issues. Our brain is a complex organ that controls various structures and functions of our body, from our memory to our breathing, muscle movements, and hormones.

Unfortunately, brain health issues are common in our society. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 20 percent of adults in the United States have a brain health issue and American adults spend about $113 billion on treatment every year. Additionally, these statistics don’t even include the treatment cost of autoimmune brain health issues, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and autism. In the article below, we will discuss how inflammation is associated with a “leaky” blood-brain barrier and what you can do to improve a variety of brain health issues.

“Leaky” Blood-Brain Barriers and Inflammation

Scientists have previously discussed how leaky gut syndrome, a well-known digestive health issue that affects the lining of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, can be associated with various health issues. However, current research studies have shown that leaky gut syndrome may also be associated with a leaky blood-brain barrier or the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier. The gut-brain connection ultimately suggests that a “leaky gut” may cause a “leaky brain”.

Biomarkers using the proteins occludin and zonulin can help determine the presence of leaky gut syndrome and a leaky blood-brain barrier. Scientists have demonstrated that increased antibodies against occludin and zonulin are one way to determine leaky brain syndrome. Scientists have also demonstrated that a molecule known microRNA-155 can increase with inflammation. MicroRNA-155 can ultimately cause microscopic gaps to develop in the blood-brain barrier that permitted passage to “harmful” components. This permeability can trigger the brain’s immune system and cause brain inflammation.

Various research studies from the cytokine model of cognitive function evaluated how brain inflammation and a leaky blood-brain barrier may be associated with cases of anxiety, depression, brain fog, and autoimmune brain health issues. By way of instance, scientists evaluated how inflammation can decrease the activation of brain cells in the frontal lobe of people with depression. In cases of brain inflammation, using drugs and/or medications, such as antidepressants, are frequently ineffective because they aren’t treating the underlying brain inflammation. If a patient suffers from anxiety, depression, brain fog, or autoimmune brain health issues, many healthcare professionals may suggest the presence of a leaky brain or a leaky blood-brain barrier.

8 Steps to Improve a Leaky Blood-Brain Barrier

Inflammation and a leaky blood-brain barrier may ultimately cause a variety of bran health issues if it’s misdiagnosed and left untreated. If you suspect you may have anxiety, depression, brain fog, or autoimmune brain health issues due to inflammation associated with a leaky blood-brain barrier, it’s important to talk to a healthcare professional to receive proper diagnosis and treatment. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to improve a leaky blood-brain barrier:

  1. Evaluate your blood-brain barrier by conducting labs for blood-brain barrier proteins, which can show BBB permeability, occludin and zonulin, which can show the antibodies against these proteins, homocysteine, which shows blood-brain barrier damage or injury through the increased levels of this amino acid, and brain agers like inflammation, which can accelerate the aging of the brain. High blood sugar may also show BBB permeability.
  2. Determine a “leaky” blood-brain barrier by conducting microbiome labs. A “leaky gut” can cause a “leaky brain”. Understanding the gut-brain axis can help determine the presence of any underlying brain health issues. Bacterial imbalances and yeast overgrowths can cause neurological symptoms. By way of instance, anxiety and depression are associated with the bacteria known as Lactobacillus helveticus and Bifidobacterium longum.
  3. Prevent yourself from eating foods, such as processed, refined and sugary foods as well as other toxins, that can cause a leaky blood-brain barrier.
  4. Regulate stress for overall brain health. Research studies ultimately suggest that acute stress can increase the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier. Tai chi, yoga, and mindfulness meditation are several effective ways to help manage stress for the overall well-being of the human brain.
  5. Take natural compounds, such as apigenin, baicalein, catechins, curcumin, luteolin, resveratrol, and rutin, that have all been suggested to reduce brain inflammation. However, because the correct dosage will be different for everyone, make sure to talk to a doctor before taking natural medicine.
  6. Participate in exercise and physical activity that can help increase a brain-derived neurotrophic factor, BDNF, which helps promote brain health.
  7. Reduce your consumption of alcohol. Alcohol can stress the brain and several research studies suggest that it can affect the blood-brain barrier.
  8. Consider visiting a functional medicine practitioner to improve a leaky blood-brain barrier. While there’s no immediate fix for many chronic brain health issues, functional medicine customizes diagnostics and natural protocols based on your unique needs to help promote overall well-being.
